Pretty much everyone said as much about Anthony Davis and Zion.
Victor is the new shiny toy.
Those were two tremendous prospects who's career arcs have been derailed by injury, though honestly Davis was clearly a better prospect then Zion. Heck there were some here (cough cough) who valued Ja over Zion because of clear injury concerns. But Victor is on an even higher level then AD as a prospect with the potential to impact the game... given health, he's very likely to be the clear cut best player of his generation. Next add in that he's good looking, well spoken, international & the biggest guy in the league... all of that matters as far as generating interest. He's going to be marketed everywhere.

All that said...I would deal the right to draft him in a heartbeat if it got me Giannis.

Wemby is the most hyped prospect since LeBron. Whole different level than AD and Zion.
Seems like they said the exact same things about Zion and the Brow. They both were the consensus #1 pick all year. They were both considered dynasty pieces.
I don’t see much difference here.

Wemby has been the consensus number 1 pick for this draft since he was like 15 years old. He could be a complete bust; but there has been significant chatter for literally years that he is the best prospect since LeBron and maybe even including LeBron.

they didn’t say the exact same things about the brow or Zion; not even close.

doesn’t mean he can’t be a bust, but there is clearly things said about him that they’ve never said about another prospect.

probably also aided by the fact that he supposedly was cooking DPOY gobert when he was 16.

This is funny because it's not an actual argument. If your statement is true that doesn't mean that Victor can't be the most hyped since LeBron because he is coming after those two guys. It's just the nature of time. I do disagree with your statement because since LeBron until now the Brow has been the most hyped prospect... Zion was a lot of fun to watch but a lot of people were worried about that weight being an issue.

Wemby is the second most hyped prospect in the history of the sport from what I can tell. He also seems like the scouts rate him as the highest prospect since LeBron. I think Wemby is higher rated but a little less hyped than Kobe was. I'm pretty sure no one is close to those three since the age of 24 hour sports media. I don't remember anyone saying that AD was a lock if healthy to be the best player in the league for a generation... they are saying that about Wemby and they were right when they did about LeBron. I don't even remember anyone saying that about Zion if he were to remain healthy and health was a constant topic with that guy even then.

I know some people are worried about how Wemby's frame will hold up but he's so fluid with his movement that I don't see it being a problem. He's just KD, stretched even more, to the point that he's going to be a better rebounder and shot blocker than KD. I also think he's a better passer than KD was and even is. It's all prognostication though so it could all be wrong but if you're grouping this guy with LeBron, AD, and Zion and if you're willing to say, "if healthy" then you're also on the side of the idea that this guy is going to be a real problem for opponents... on a multi time MVP scale.

IDK???
I seem to remember a bunch of comments saying "Lets just Tank for Zion" back in fall of 2018. There was like absolutely no question he was going number 1.

Yet there were also many people saying Morant was going to be a better player.

Same thing happening this year with Scoot Henderson. Lots of people wondering if Victor will stay healthy and if Scoot won't end up a better pick. Just because a few very loud people are saying Victor will transcend all other players just like a few loud people said about Zion and Davis doesn't mean he doesn't have some viable questions?
The guy is 7-4 and we all know large bodies have problems holding up at times. Matter of fact some of those same people were all in on Chet and as i remember.
I'm going stay with the wait and see approach. Hope Victor turns out to be everything everyone is saying he could become. It will be fun to watch for sure. Even if the Blazers don't get lucky and get the pick.

Things like this are all over the net.
"Former NBA exec says Scoot Henderson may have better career than Victor Wembanyama. “Wembanyama will go No. 1 in the draft, but Scoot may have the better overall career when we look back 15 years from now,” one former NBA executive boldly predicted while chatting with HoopsHype.Jan 27, 2023"

I most certainly (If given the chance) would choose Victor with the #1 pick. I would never want to miss the chance at having him but we all know there are absolutely no guarantees in the game of basketball.

I wouldn't give the #1 pick is this years draft for for Embiid.
If you are PDX and say you end up with #4-6 then you could pkg the pick and players for Embiid.

Sure, both your statements can be true, but that doesn't mean Zion was the same level of a prospect as Victor is now. LeBron was a much higher prospect than Zion. Yes teams may have tanked for all three.

Yes they are all the clear #1 prospects of their class. However, #1 prospects are not all equal.

I clearly wouldn't either, Embiid has had some real major injury concerns, and even when healthy he's older on a massive max contract. I suppose if the rest of your team is a win now contender there's an argument for Embiid. However I think even as a rookie Wemba will be a good contributor.

if we're talking about pre-draft hype, I think you have to start with the context of consensus. There is simply much more media now, or at least a much wider variety, So, it's more difficult to build a consensus now than it used to be

anyway, Lebron certainly was hyped, but I'm not sure even he had the consensus of hype that Kareem, aka Lew Alcindor had. And Bill Walton had a ton of hype equal at least equal and probably greater than Lebron, especially since he was coming of a 44 point performance on 21-22 shooting in the NCAA championship game. And, Hakeem, from the Phi Slamma Jamma team had Lebron-level hype. And that was back in the days when everybody knew you needed a dominant big man to win an NBA title and C's in the draft were at their highest value ever

Wemby is a unicorn, a 7'3 one to boot, and unicorns will always get a lot of attention. The last truly elite unicorn was Durant and he was still taken 2nd over a traditional dominant big man. The NBA has changed dramatically though and traditional bigs are dinosaurs in the modern NBA. What hasn't changed is that big men tend to be injured a lot more than other players. Chet Holmgren is just the latest example. So while Wemby has that length and the unicorn thing going for him, he's also skating on the thin ice of big man history. Still, he's far enough above everybody else in his class that almost no team would trade him away before he has stepped on a NBA floor

I don't think you're getting the reigning MVP for the 4th pick in this draft. Maybe if we land and send the second pick, send pick 23, a future first, Ant and Nurk, then we could start to dream about Embiid but outside of that it would take Wemby and I also wouldn't give up Wemby for Embiid and definitely not Wemby, Ant and Nurk.

They still say no

Could be right, but #4 and the other 1st round pick, plus Nurk & Simons and some may get it done? When Harden and Harris leave that team is very young but still good and Embiid could ask out if they get bumped?
Going to be a fun off season...

First off, I don't think Morey has any interest in making Embed available, wether they get bounced or not. Second, if he did have a brain infarction and made him available, he would demand four unprotected picks and four pick swaps wether anyone likes it or not. Morey was able to get value for Simmons carcass and he is very shrewd. Third, if he traded Embed, he would then have to move Harden. Pretty sure he does not want to do that either. It takes stars to win in the NBA. Philly has two legit stars and good role players. Maxey is balling now. They are not throwing in the towel. Same with Miami. They have two legit stars and are looking for a third. Not a rebuild. If Boston were to trade Brown, it would only be because he informed them he would not be re-signing. Again, Boston too has two legit stars, good roll players and are looking for a third star. It appears success in the NBA requires two legit stars and at least 8 very good roll players.

Zion was considered the #1 pick, but there were certainly questions about his weight, how it would affect him going forward as he filled out even more, and how it would impact injuries. Those turned out to all be very legitimate concerns.

Well lets all hope Victor has a long and healthy career. Wherever he ends up.

If he ends up in Portland, I expect him to have the same health as Walton, Bowie and Oden. But they were centers and Wemby is a forward. Still, you get the first pick, you draft him and hope the hell he stays healthy.

That's right. Think Mychal Thompson and Lamarcus Aldridge.
