Dame or Ant?

Agree on Ant coming off the bench. With GP2 still 2-4 weeks from being at his best, it makes sense to go with a 3-guard rotation. Start Hart at SG, and play Little and Winslow at SF.
It is a long season and Keon and SS will have time to break into the rotation.
Ant coming off the bench to roast the 2nd units sounds good in theory but no way is he coming off the bench. If the Dame/Ant backcourt doesn’t work out, I just hope the front office doesn’t sit on there hands waiting for the backcourt to blow up like they did with Dame/CJ.

Actually, he really would not be playing against other benches. In theory, he would still get 30+ minutes in a 3-guard rotation. Having said that I guess it really makes no difference which one starts as long as all three are slotted for the backcourt. Chauncey can always decide to end games with those three together on the court...... if the matchups dictate it.

If you're just being logical and you can still get superstar value for Dame even after his extension then you trade Dame but we're not Vulcans even though that's the name of our team's parent company. We're human beings and Dame means something to us and to the city and to the people making the decisions. Dame means a lot more to most of us than Ant. So, if there is good value out there for Ant and I'm pretty sure after the show he put on last season there would be, you trade Ant if the two don't complement each other on both ends of the court. Get the best piece that fits that you can for Ant or use him with others to consolidate talent because we're not robots and Dame means a lot.

I vote for "how about giving them more than 3 fucking games before we overreact? "
It’s not about overreacting. Simons is a starting PG in this league not a sidekick SG. And Sharpe needs to start. I don’t need to see 3 games to have this opinion.

On the one hand.....I would rather trade Ant and get to see Dame retire a Blazer. OTOH....trading Dame to a team with a legit chance to win a ring would be the best way to thank him for his contributions here.

Would trading Dame give us the assets to start a strong rebuild (like Utah trading Golbert)? I honestly don't think so. At best we might get a pair of firsts somewhere down the road and 3 or 4 turdburger contracts to make the money work.
Not interested in trading Dame into a champion like we did with Drexler and Sheed.

I’ll be pissed if he can’t do it here.

I've moved on from believing there is any realistic chance Dame can win a ring here. The franchise is just too far away and he is too old.

Maybe Sharpe could be part of a team contending here in some far off day, he has enough future years for this franchise to change dramatically.

I care more about increasing the chance players like Sharpe could win a ring here than preventing Dame from winning one elsewhere. If Dame leaving can help the Blazers increase that chance at a title 7-10 years from now; then I'm all for it.

The key question is: do we try to trade Grant and Nurk before or after we trade Dame?

My dream is that Phil Knight just figures, fuck it, I've only got a few years left, and offers Jody an absurd amount of money, and comes in ready to make wholesale changes.

Are we sure that matters?

If Nurk is viewed as overpaid by most teams (likely) than his value is probably worth a late second round pick or worse.

I guess we could trade him for a player on an even worse contract (Westbrook?) for an asset but otherwise I don't see the point of trading him either way.

I’m in the same boat, provided that Dame actually had his mind set on leaving.

LOL...you can't be serious

"7-10 years from now".....really?....really???

you mean when Ant is 33, older than Dame now, and Sharpe is 29? A window that starts 2-5 years after Dame's contract(s) ends.; a window that runs from when he's 39 -42. A window that could start 3 years after Ant leaves in free agency and could be the same year Sharpe leaves

considering how rapidly the NBA changes and evolves, thinking you can extrapolate how moves would impact the team 2/3 of a decade, or more, in the future, is completely loony-tunes. That's simply expressing your wish that Portland would trade Dame and supporting it with fairy dust

Dame is special. Ant is a nice player right now, and hopefully gets better. Hopefully is not Will become great. I'm entertained by Dame. The special that he can kick in at any time is thrilling. Ant doesn't have that . Even a total rebuild isn't any guaranty that the Blazers will contend at any time in the near or extended future. I choose to live in the now because of that. I'm hoping that Joe can put the right pieces together to achieve special. But i'm riding the talents of Dame till there ain't more riding to do. Go Blazers!!

I still don't know what the fuck we're talking about here? Is it just @Rastapopoulos very unrealistic wet dream that we would ever trade Dame if he didn't demand one? If it's just personal, I personally thought Ant got a bigger overpay than Dame this off season. If it's actually just personal, I like Ant and everything but the dude's not Dame. If it's about game, Dame has proven he has all nba game.

This isn't a question of Dame or Ant because every rational person would say Dame. This is a question of sticking with trying to build a win now team or blowing it up. Don't be reductive and make it about two players because when you do it becomes silly because Dame is so far superior to Ant even when considering the amount of years left being effective and upside. This is how silly this thread is. If Ant was on another team would you trade him for Dame straight up if the team had the cap room to absorb Dame's salary? Fuck no you wouldn't!

That is actually an interesting question.

The only way to get value for Nurk would be for him to get off to a fast start and then con someone into thinking he won't get hurt again.

I wouldn’t trade either guy unless Dame was traded. What can we actually get for an expiring Grant? If he plays well, you can probably trade him to a contender for at least a late 1st this year. But if he’s not playing well enough to get anything back, why trade him? We have to re-sign Grant before ever trading him.

Nurk—I’m just hoping he wasn’t good in the preseason because he doesn’t try in the postseason. Cause if this Nurk is regular season Nurk, unload him before the beginning of next season. So before Dame ever gets traded.

A faded Dame with a superstar Sharpe could win a title in a few years. Look how CP3 has done with Phoenix (Finals) and Jason Kidd did with Mavs (Title). With the right pieces around him, we won’t need peak Dame. Kidd was 38!

This right here. I think there are more examples too.

I think the earlier post about a window for contention "7-10 years from now" might be pretty revealing...

now, this is just my opinion; theory; hunch; suspicion...whatever. That being: some people are saying trade Dame because Portland almost certainly can't build a contender around him in the next 3-4 years...they are aware of something deep down which is that Portland isn't going to build a contender around what they trade Dame for in the next 3 or 4 years either. In other words, all the hoopla about contending is just cover for their desire to see another direction...

now, I get that...I really do. I spent several seasons desperately wanting the Blazers to go a different direction than the perpetual reboots of Olshey. I wasn't inclined to let go of that desire, so there's that

but the thing is we pretty much know what it takes to be a contender: at least one elite player plus at least one, better if two, teammates at solid all-star level. And, at least one of the best two players has to be a two-way wing. That's the formula and we all know what it almost certainly needs to look like

so then, Portland has the elite player. And he might very well remain elite for the next 3-4 seasons. What Portland does not have is an accompanying all-star who happens to be a two-way wing. They aren't close. So the solution, according to some, it to trade the one elite player Portland has, the only player close to all-star level, and actually move further away from contention in the long-shot hope that somehow Portland can loop back around and not only land another elite player, but a couple of all-stars as well.......which as I said is why those advocating this know it isn't really a path to contention within the time frame they are using to criticize building a team around Dame

So you are saying they are guaranteed not to succeed and these are the only options?

Simons and Sharpe are a perfect set...You do not break that up. For the time being, you definitely start Hart at SG and bring Simons off the bench to play with Sharpe and prepare for the future.

Simons and it’s an easy choice considering age and contract.

I love Lillard and what he’s meant to the team and the city but I understand sports enough that when it’s clear the future isn’t bright and you have an aging star it’s time to reconsider.

I’m just afraid with that contract I don’t think that might be an option for a team looking to acquire to get them over the top

Respectfully disagree about aging star. If you look at the top contenders they have players as old or older than Dame.
Butler 33
Lopez, Middleton & Holiday over 3o plus
Harden 30 plus
Horford ancient/ Boston needed another star player in their 30's to beat GS.lol
GS...afew old duffers.
remember today 30 is like the last decades 1990's 20's
