I agree with the OP, trade Dame, sign an elephant!

Dame's %, the Elephant In The Room
I think TS% is at least a little more insightful than merely taking the FG% or 3PT% on their own.

Career TS%
Steph Curry: 62.6%
Durant: 61.8%
Reggie Miller: 61.4%
Dame: 58.7%
Ray Allen: 58%
Trae Young: 58%
Donovan Mitchell: 56.3%

TS% this year
Durant: 67.3%
Steph Curry: 66.5%
Reggie Miller (best season): 65%
Dame: 64.8%
Ray Allen (best season): 62.4%
Donovan Mitchell: 61.6%
Trae Young: 56.8%

But even though this is comparing other great outside shooters to Dame, it's never going to be apples to apples. One other factor that I think needs to be looked at is the percentage of FG's assisted, which wiz touched on, as this can help determine how difficult the shot selection was that led to the true-shooting percentages listed above.

Percentage of Career shots that were assisted
Reggie Miller: 2-pt shots- 68.2% ; 3-pt shots 87.5%
Ray Allen: 2-pt shots- 43.3% ; 3-pt shots 84%
Durant: 2-pt shots- 49% ; 3-pt shots 71%
Steph Curry: 2-pt shots- 33.9% ; 3-pt shots 61.1%
Donovan Mitchell: 2-pt shots- 21.7% ; 3-pt shots 54.3%
Dame: 2-pt shots- 20.3% ; 3-pt shots 46.2%
Trae Young: 2-pt shots- 16% ; 3-pt shots 30.5%

So of the three players I used who seemed to have better TS% - Steph, Durant and Reggie Miller, all three of them had far more shots assisted than Dame. Surprisingly so in the case of Curry. Dame has to create so much more for himself, with the exception of Trae apparently.

Our hero ball offense is garbage and it's all we know, Ant and CJ are from the same ilk.
This is much closer to the crux of what's holding us back. Basically Dame's entire career he's been paired in the backcourt with CJ and/or Ant, instead of Klay Thompson for example. It's not personal, I've always like both CJ/Ant, but the team has a cap on how successful it can be as long as the starting shooting guard is the size of a PG and doesn't play defense very well. Maybe an extended stretch where Dame is paired with Thybull/Sharpe will convince the front-office of this fact, but I'm not holding my breath.

Appreciate the data wiz and noknobs, awesome!

Is giving a max contract and building around a shooter even wise then? Because we are certainly not an excellent team. Seems like we would need him to have astronomical percentages in order to justify that kind of pay out. I think like only one of you answered my actual questions in the OP, which is fine, but the point is becoming more clear that we may need to hit the reset button.

They are setting the reset button. That doesn't mean they have to get rid of a generational talent for the hope that ONE & DONE youngsters make it happen sooner . They've set themselves up for getting something done. Something being a plan to add as much talent, that leads to success going forward, as possible. Watching Dame's career has been incredibly enjoyable & entertaining. I have great appreciation for that. I'm gonna enjoy it as long as i can. There are no guarantees in life, or sports. Enjoy the moment. Or not. It's up to you.

My man Dame is epic, legendary, illustrious, etc. etc.

He wants to be the next Steph Curry, and he's damn close...

Or is he?

Steph:

Is it fair to compare the two? No. Of course not, Steph is one of a kind.

Point being, is Damian really truly able to carry us to a championship? Is the dread that we all fear that we're wasting the prime of his career warranted? Can a PG that doesn't shoot extra-extraterrestrial numbers lead our team to a championship? Despite winning the 3P competition...

I say no.

The dread is that we haven’t even come close to putting a team around Damian in the same galaxy as:

DPOY Draymond
All-star Klay
Finals MVP Iggy

… Shall I continue?

And I’m pretty sure if Dame was surrounded by two first team all defensive players, Kevin Durant, and 3 all stars we would make a pretty solid run at the title.

Dame and Curry play very different styles. Curry runs of screens and plays without the ball. Dame has the ball in his hands almost all the time.
Along with making umpteen All NBA D teams, Draymond has been the W's assist leader for most of their run. I always laugh when posters slight him as he'd be near the top of the list of players I wish could have spent their career running alongside Dame.

Unless they trade Ant they're just regurgitating the same basic premise. Starting two small guards who aren't known for defense and who make 65m a year doesn't work. It's not going to change suddenly in 2024, that's a guarantee. Until that move happens there's only so much else you can do.

I'd caveat that if Portland wins the lotto, they'll suddenly become a contender and back court will be a strength as Victor will allow them to play up on guys and dare them to go into the paint. Other then that, they need to hit on their picks more then better balance the roster with trades to reach contender status. The team is a ways away talent wise and needs to face the reality of where they're at rather then do offseason patch jobs to keep the mediocre going & butts in seats. If they want to be a contender with Dame, (again) they need to hit on their picks

Or perhaps, not so dramatically, lower his 3PA to around 3 or 4 and get more efficient shots (He's shooting 11 shots a game!). Our hero ball offense is garbage and it's all we know, Ant and CJ are from the same ilk.

It's almost just lazy coaching - Hey Dame, go jack up shots, and then hey Ant/CJ when you get the ball do the same thing.

Did anybody watch the Bucks/Celtics game a couple weeks ago? Two top teams in the NBA combined for 92 3-point attempts and barely cracked 100 points each. It was a long bomb brickfest of embarrassing proportions.
