Whoa - I was just reading that and decided to come over here to post about him.
I highly doubt we cut bait on Stotts this early, but if what's written about Joerger is true, then we should absolutely make the change now otherwise he'll be locked up with another team for the foreseeable future. And I feel fairly safe in saying that Stotts didn't exhibit anything that makes me think he'll ever take a team deep into the Playoffs.

"Not long ago, success as a head coach in the Continental Basketball Association was a reliable predictor of success in the NBA. Phil Jackson, George Karl and Flip Saunders, among others, all came up through the minor leagues before landing on an NBA bench. So did Joerger, who won five championships in seven seasons as a head coach in the IBA, CBA and D-League -- all before turning 35 years old.

“He loves the craft,” says an NBA general manager. “Look what he’s done with [the Memphis] defense. He’s got Thibodeau’s thing for defense, but he’s a lot more likable than Thibs.”

When Lionel Hollins delegated the Memphis’ defensive game plan to Joerger, the Grizzlies were the league’s 24th-ranked defense. In the three seasons since, they’ve finished ninth, then seventh and now second in defensive efficiency, and they did it with Zach Randolph at power forward and an unusually small point guard in Mike Conley. It’s rare that NBA players cite their assistants by name, but Tony Allen routinely praises Joerger’s defensive blueprint as an essential ingredient in the Grizz’s success.

Joerger loves to problem-solve and grapple with game theory, and he has an appreciation of analytics. He knows which NBA point guards, in descending order, reject screens most frequently and understands how to impart that information to players. Most of all, Joerger has an acute awareness of what each player on the roster can and can't do. Randolph won't be asked to perform Joakim Noah tasks, and a unit's collective shortcomings are priced into coverage schemes.

Every NBA team these days wants to patent a defensive system, and those in search of an architect have a natural candidate in Joerger."

I thought ya'll loved Stotts... half-way through the season he got a near 100% approval rating from ya'll in a s2 poll. If he's on the outs though, Joerger really would be a great replacement.

I think that both the team and the fans in Memphis would be more than happy if Hollins and Bibby were ousted and Joerger (which is for some reason pronounced like Jäger) got the reins while retaining Bob Thornton (our great big man coach).

That's because we were winning.

Stotts seems to be a decent offensive coach, but our defense is just so atrocious, something has to change. I would be amazed if Stotts were replaced so soon, though.

Do you really think that though? I mean we've had better players than a lot of teams that had better defense. Personally I think it's the coach. Stotts isn't the one I'm pointing at though. His name is kaleb

I look at Stotts as a place holder. He's not a bad coach, and hell he might be enough to take us all the way if guys continue to grow, but I still believe there is someone better out there. Maybe they're an assistant coach, maybe they're a retread, maybe they haven't finished playing. I just hope the Blazers keep their eyes open, because I don't think Stotts is the "the coach" and I think we should still be looking.

I remember the days when all we heard about on the board was PACE PACE PACE!! Memphis plays with the second lowest pace in the NBA, their entire game plan is to slow the game down and wear teams out.

They're unwatchable to me, frankly. A very boring team who thus far who gotten lucky in the playoffs with opponents getting major injuries.

The only slower team in the league is New Orleans. Zzzzzzzzzzz

Tony Allen recently said that he wants to be back with the Grizz (thank God), and if the new penny-pinching majority owner doesn't screw it up, that could pretty much be a farewell to Hollins, because it's been billed as an "either-or" situation for a while, and as a diehard fan that watched nearly every game this season, I'd much rather have way more TA and way less Hollins.

I think the new CEO/Managing Partner (essentially our new GM), Jason Levien, probably refused to comment on Hollins' status for good reason. You don't get too many "no comments" on a coach's status coming off a WCF appearance, if there isn't some real discussion about ditching him.

Looking forward to a Joerger era, and feeling bad for LAC, Brooklyn, or whoever gets caught up on the name value of Lionel Hollins this summer.

Why not just throw a grip of money at him to be an assistant with the blazers? As the team is trying to change it's reputation and lure free agents, they would avoid an air of instability in the organization by switching coaches so soon. The current players seem to like Stotts, which is important. Then if Joerger is here for 2-3 years and then they want to make a change (after Stotts contract?) they could do it then. IMHO.
