CJ, Trent Jr, Zach Collins, Will Barton, Noah Vonleh, Tim Frazier and others but yes...the guys on your list gained value coming from Stotts rookie coaching and got paid to play in the league...some had their best seasons in Portland but they did get contracts.. CJ is a perfect 6 man type player...he's just not in that role...Simons is getting development here too...you don't have to appreciate it because you won't see value in Stotts tenure here...that's a given that you admit all the time...all good.

Wait, are you trying to make the argument that Stotts developed Barton? LMAO. Seriously with a straight face? He refused to play Barton, that's why he was thrown in a trade when Matthews went down. Stotts didn't do shit to develop Barton. I haven't even heard that one before. Thanks for the laugh. lol

developing Barton...yes of course...he didn't crack the regular rotation but we developed him and Denver gave him a job after we drafted him..they didn't waive him after the trade....surprised the dunk contest didn't end his career but I like Will. Dame didn't want to trade Will...that's that narrative ..

Stotts should not be on the hot seat. Perhaps Olshey should but Stotts has coached over-achieving teams year after year. He has kept Lillard bought in, as well as the rest of the team. He has coached the best offense in the NBA and bought time while Nurk, CJ and Collins have had major injuries. And now, when everyone but ZC is healthy, that same high powered offense is becoming a formidable defense.
It's kind of ridiculous the way some are looking at it?
This year 2/3 of the season Stotts over achieved without two starters and then had a rough patch when they were trying to get the group together. Since then he has again aver achieved with the starters for the last 2-3 weeks.
How is Stotts not doing a good job here?
I'm absolutely no expert but i see results and results seem to speak for themselves.

that's your choice...I personally respect his opinions as stated...no "hidden reading shit into it" ...he's an impressive man who is clear spoken. I also happen to agree with him and Dame and CJ and Melo and Norm and all the guys who've come out in support of Stotts even through the losing streak....shows character. I'm actually really proud of the Blazers these days.
There is no "hidden shit" in it, it's basic common sense that RoCo wouldn't completely throw his coach under the bus. I'm not saying he's lying, I'm saying he'll say that no matter what. I don't know how that's even debateable.

Portland didn't really win games they shouldn't have won without Nurkic and C.J. They had an extremely easy schedule during that stretch. They had a tough final 15 games set up for them but ever top 10 team they've played has had a star (or multiple stars) out. That's why I like to base my evaluation of the coach based on what happens on the basketball court, instead of basing it off of a sheet of paper.

You're projecting he's sugar coating and I'm saying he's being honest about Stotts....you might actually consider that he likes his coach even though you don't like his coach.

I'm not projecting anything other than the obvious which is that he wouldn't throw Stotts under the bus.

No. If he thought it was a Stotts issue do you think he'd say it publically?
I heard what he said and it wasn't matter of fact...it was a solid vote of confidence....the politics just fuel false speculations....I believe he was being honest....

I see the effort but the other teams still make their shots off the rebound. All the stats are fine but I would like to see stats for offensive conversion from a blocked shot and impact towards the game..

defense gave up a def rating of 119.5 last night, which is 3.5 points worse than their season average of 116.0; which is 29th and the 3rd worst in NBA history, IIRC. Other than that, 'defense improving'

Out of curiosity, are defensive ratings slipping for other teams as the season progresses? I.e., are offenses getting better after the short off-season and choppy start?

I can't say for sure; I don't think so. The median D rating right now is 112.4 and IIRC, that's about what it was 3 months ago. I'm not sure where you'd find those numbers but I'm sure they are somewhere. Maybe behind a paywall

This is far from definitive, but a quick search just now turned up this for Dec and overall:

https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/defensive-rating-nba-teams
https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/nba-teams-defensive-rating-by-month

The Dec average is 110.3 and the current average is 112.3 (I dumped them into a spreadsheet to save time), so there is slippage relative to the small Dec sample size. A Jan/Feb comparison might shed more light on that.

If that is accurate, then Portland improving slightly in D-rating is actually a 2-3 point improvement relative to the league trend. Big if, though.

Since Nurk's return, the Blazers have a defensive rating of 113.7 (17th in the league / 0.5pts below league avg.) in non-garbage time minutes per Cleaning the Glass.

And the player 2nd in defensive rating during that span (per NBA.com) behind Nurkic (107.1) is.....

Anfernee Simons (107.9)

yeah, I'm not putting any stock in the 3-5 game sample sizes that early in the season. I'd say you need to have played 25-30 games to have a decent statistical sample

if you credit that website with accuracy, Portland's rating by month:

December 118.2 (4 games)
January 115.2 (14 games)
February 118.2 (14 games)
March 119.4 (15 games)
April 114.1 (16 games)

no result for May

if you go backwards from the game against Phoenix, the ratings in May:

Suns 119.5
Jazz 110.2
Rocket 126.0 (yikes!!)
Spurs 102.8
Lakers 102.4
Cavs 105.9
Hawks 125.3 (yikes!!)
Celtics 117.5

really good ratings against offensively challenged teams. Not good ratings against good offenses
