Defense on Madden is officially too easy.

I'm on All-Madden level, and although I've had some major trouble moving the ball downfield at times (not usually), It's been way easy to hold opponants to very few points.I'm playing with the Jets, no Free Agent nor trade additions in the first year. I have crappy Robertson at nose, but everyone else is average to above average. I'm using the Mangini playbook. Here are my first 4 weeks Titants W 41-8vs. Patriots W 24-3@ Bills W 45-3vs. Colts 32-0I've scored at least 1 Defensive TD in every game, 2 Defensive TD's vs the Titans, and 4 Defensive TD's vs the Bills. That's 8 total, and an average of 2 Defensive TD's per game.I just got done holding the Colts to 0 points!!! What's the point of All-Madden if I can stop Peyton Manning from Scoring a TD all game long?Here are my defensive totals... remember that this is 4 games into the year:Total Yards: 430 (1st in the league)Pass Yards: 231 (1st in the league)Rush Yards: 199 (1st in the league)Pts/Game: 3.5 (1st in the league)Sacks: 32 (1st in the league)INT: 11 (1st in the league)Fumble Rec: 3 (T-10th in the league)Tot. Oh, and just a funny little thing... I injured Vince Young in the 1st quarter of the 1st game and put him out for 6 weeks. Why the game had him start over Volek is unrealistic anyhow, but oh well, Volek is starting for now...

I have trouble with defense, but then again I always have. I never really was that good though.

I suck at offense so defense is what gets me wins.I have serious trouble passing the ball vertically with McNair. I have to settle with short 4 yard passes and somehow they get picked off too.

Running the 46 with the Ravens is demolishing, you can penetrate the line almost all the time or stop for a short gain. 3-4, Nickel, and Dime aren't as effective cause they pick on the free safety using the tight end or 3rd cornerback using the slot though (I think I have Pittman there).

I forgot all about them for a second there. Thanks for reminding me. I increased them two ticks in everything on offense and it worked well. The Jags with Matt Jones was killer at times.

the key to playing good defense is understanding the different assignments and how to tinker with the assignments to make them work with each other. Its stuff like:Making the different man-to-man assignments workEnsuring the zones dont overlap, cover the field etcMixing and matching different blitzesincluding zone blitzes and overloads.Also some good advice - as soon as possible, try to acquire a FAST MLB, a fast shutdown-esque CB and a sackmachine DE.

Ray Lewis isn't that fast but I'm pretty sure he's like top 5-10 in speed at MLB. McAlister and Rolle are almost unfair to have with Reed in the secondary (if you don't get 1 INT with the Ravens, you're wasting a lot of talent

) and Suggs, Pryce on the line is great. Suggs gets sacks from the right side and Pryce is good at stopping the run. Reed over the top on streaking receivers is deadly, he either gets a nice ball separating shot on the WR or bats it down at the very least. He's got good hands too.My favorite is Ngata though. His stats suck kinda (he does lead all DEs in tackle for losses but only has like 1.5 sacks if I remember correctly) but when I move him onto the tackle after the snap, the guard is slow to respond and Suggs sometimes gets a free shot at the quarterback, occasionaly getting a sack. I noticed it's not as easy to get sacks in 07 or I just concentrated on INTs more in 06.

The key to playing good defense is finding ways to open wholes in their O-line for your players to penetrate. example is playing nickle formation, setting Robertson in pinch mode, make sure Ellis ties up the OT outside, and use Vilma to penetrate. If they put a RB blocking you, it's not difficult at all to break loose from that in less than a second (you can usually just swim past them) and you at the very least get the QB to throw early.etc. etc. Things like that is how you play good defense. Also just being smart. Double their TE (if he's good) on 3rd down and switch to your players covering the flats in zone setups and tell them to man up on someone instead in 3rd and long. If they complete a swing pass to a RB on 3rd and long 90% you stop him before he gets the 1st if he's uncovered.
