Depp to play Riddler in next Batman?

Let me just come out and say it. Johnny Depp would totally suck as the Riddler and his casting would destroy the franchise. Also, a dark Riddler doesn't have to be anything like a dark Joker. I see the Riddler as being more sane and calculating as opposed to the Joker's being a wild card. As for the casting, I think it should be someone that can project a more sinister and sadistic streak than Johnny Depp ever could. I was thinking of someone more like Valentine Pelka who played Kronos, leader of the Four Horsemen, in Highlander the Series.

You act like Depp can't act. How many people thought Heath Ledger would do an awesome job as The Joker? He blew us away with his performance.

Seriously(?); I'll add 2 more Brits to the mix; Hugh Laurie aka Greg House or Rowan Atkinson.

Rowan Atkinson?? He is way too typecast as Mr. Bean to be seen as the Riddler imo.

I'm not saying he can't act. I'm saying that he would be a colossal mistake as the Riddler. Maybe I'm wrong. I doubt it, but maybe. If he ended up playing the Riddler like Jack Sparrow, I would be sick. I just can't see Depp reaching the level of grit that the Riddler would need to make the next movie successful. I like the suggestion of Hugh Laurie.
 
Depp wouldn't be considered a great actor if he wasn't versatile. Why would he play Riddler like Jack Sparrow? Each role requires a different persona. Even though it was a musical, Depp was pretty gritty as Sweeney Todd. I think he can pull of being the Riddler, but it's not like he's the only choice for the character.
 
Depp isnt a very good choice for the riddler, the choice is so hard to make. David Tennent was rumoured to have interest in playing the riddler. I think that they'll go with the riddler in the next movie, if there is one. seems to make the most sense.
 
I think Johnny Depp has lost a lot of respect as an actor because of his role as Jack Sparrow and how commercial it became, but it still was an awesome role. He can act, one of the better actors out there IMO. I think he could easily pull off the Riddler.

I hate Depp so much that him just being in a movie keeps me from watching it.
 
Really? I thought Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a great movie, mostly because of Depp.
 
I thought Jim Carrey's Riddler was the best part of Batman Forever - even over watching Nicole Kidman, whose character was rather annoying...

Actually, I thought Jim Carrey's Riddler was the only good part of any of the Batman movies in the 80s/90s.
 
Well, there was Michelle Pfeiffer in that suit...
 
Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito both were an awesome Catwoman and Penguin, respectively.

I'd have to agree. I guess I just see Depp as Tim Burton's little freak errand boy and, as a lifelong Batman fan, have no desire to see him in this series of films. Some folks seem to think that he can act and perhaps he can. I don't intend to see any of Burton's self indulgent crap to find out. I do think there are a lot better choices for the Riddler should Nolan return and decide to use that particular villian. Just to set the record straight, I don't harbor the same hard feelings for Tim Burton as I do for Joel Schumaker. The first movie, Batman, is actually a decent film if you can overlook Michael Keaton as Batman/Bruce Wayne. (Actually, I like Michael Keaton, but not in this role.) Jack's Joker has become extremely overrated over the years too. However, it was dark without totally succuming to the self indulgent freakishness that ruined Batman Returns and turned me against wanting to see any movie where Burton has been given free reign. Since I can't tell where Burton ends and Depp begins, I have no use for Depp either.

The thing you have to recall about the last time the Riddler was in a movie was Joel Schumacher was the director.

I could see Depp as the Mad Hatter provided it was Jack Sparrow-like & not Willy Wonka.
 
A Riddler with a British accent? Innnnteresting. I hope he has a cunning plan.

Well, lets see as for great Villians that can be used:

Riddler (of course) - if you actually read the comics you would know the big difference between him and the Joker. Joker is like some mentioned earlier a "loose cannon" while the Riddler is very methodical and precise with his plans. And I'm not gonna hate on Depp...I honestly think he could play any roll put in his path.

Clayface - if toned down as far as special effects wise he is always a good character.

Killer Croc - The name says it all (nothing like a circus freak with a mean streak) Besides, He's a big frickin' Crocidle-Man...what is there not to like?

Harley Quinn - Every great villian should have a great woman behind him. With Joker now presumably in Arkum (rebuilt of course) what better way to introduce the Future love of Mr. J's eyes

Bane - an not the Brain-dead lap-dog on the garbage movie, but the Bane that was smart enough (after finding Batman's Identity) to orginize a prison break of all the inmates of Arkum just so Batman would tire himself out catching them while he waited for a worn out, sleep deprived Batman to return home and jump him there...not only did he break Batman's back but he broke his spirt and will to fight crime...big kudos...classic.

If Hugh Laurie can do reasonably well as Greg House, then...

As long as E. Nygma's quest isn't for a giant turnip then we'll be alright.
 
well, in all honesty, just like with Marvel Studios they both have been great with their casting as of late, so i'd be good with whomever they choose as long as the keep the directing team

Deadshot - With the way the movies have turn gritty and realistic who better to fit into a modern storyline than a high paid assasin with silencer wrist guns, a bad ass suped up Sniper rifle and has the ability to hit a target (moving or while he's on a moving object) with pin-point precision. Not only does that make him dangerous, but he also wants to die...although he doesn't want to commit suicide he wants to go out in a spectacular way so as to be remembered forever. With this lack of fearing death coupled with his abilities who better to make one last stand against? You can't go out with a bigger bang then if you took the Dark Knight out with you

Why a British accent? The current Batman is from Wales, but Bale can drop the accent. For that matter, Gordan (Gary Oldman) is a Brit too.

Oops, My bad homie. No need to take it personal. But he is a bad-ass though...did you bring up the others as well?

BTW I didn't see it mentioned on this forum...it you mentioned it in another one, how am I supposed to know? it's not like I regard every other forum that mentions Batman before I post on one. I just don't have time to scan every entry before I respond...I'm too busy dodging bullets....lol

For the record, the Joker as so aptly put in the movie is an agent of Chaos.

Props to Natta for breakin' it down. I noticed Poison Ivy wasn't there. Thank you.

I am not a big fan of Depp but he does do a solid job... its only when he hooks up w/ Tim Burton that his character interpretation gets a little weird. Depp IMO is not the right person To play the Riddler.

True, but while they've dropped their accents when needed, I don't know of any instance where Atkinson has done so.

All of a sudden, I feel like I've taken my pearls of wisdom and hocked them at a pawn shop. Oh, the humanity!
