Derik Queen?

Queen and Toppin both caught my eye in the tourney. Not sure if Toppin is coming out yet. At the time, Queen was rated higher but neither were near 11.

Pluses:
  • he's a bucket in the halfcourt - something we don't have at the moment and something that seems to be coming back into fashion a little (Randle no longer the joke he used to be)
  • He's supposed to be an excellent passer - should team up well with Clingan
Minuses:
  • Terrible defender on a team that's trying to make its identity defense
  • is he suited to the uptempo game we're trying to play?
  • Short for the type of game he plays, and not exactly athletic either

Closer to Zach than Swanigan. But even if he matches Zach, I'm not sure I think that is worth a top 14 pick in the current NBA.
Zbo absolutely is worth an 11th pick. I'm clearly taking Zbo over most the guys drafted at #11 since 2000;

Jett Howard
Ousmane Dieng
James Bouknight
Devin Vassell
Malik Monk
Dough McDermott
Michael Carter-Williams
Meyers Leonard
Cole Aldrich
Terrence WIlliams
Jerryd Bayless
Acie Law
Fran Vazquez
Andris Biedrins
Mickael Pietrus
Jared Jeffries
Kedrick Brown
Jerome Moiso

Now theres a number of players much better than ZBo also that were at #11 starting with SGA. Unfortunately I'm not seeing any SGA level player available on the mocks at #11. If we can snag a ZBo on a cheap rookie contract - then do it. Now if he is unlikely to realize potential as a ZBo level player - thats a different dynamic and yes should give us pause to select him.

While need is not a big factor for me in picking rookies - we do have the defenders on this roster to cover for a player like that and could really use some offensive punch.

He reminds me of Ike Diogu but more mobile. Good for garbage buckets and under the modern game, cutting to the rim. JJ Hickson was listed above as a comp and that might be another apt comparison.

Not seeing anything else beyond that.

There are complaints about motor, tweener size, lack of strong go-to moves, awkward shooting form, and defensive intensity.

I don't think he's Zach Randolph, who had excellent footwork and could glide similar to a wing when he was a younger player while also creating his own shot. Here's what young Zach looked like and....quite honestly, if he had been in the modern era, he might've focused more on developing that part of his game to resemble something like Ingram rather than being the pure PF that he was.

So, I'd expect Ike Diogu meets JJ Hickson, instead, but with playmaking

For me, the minuses outweigh the pluses. He does not fit the identity of our team.

To be fair, the Drexler Blazers were far more of a run-n-gun team than our current iteration, and Duckworth was far fatter than Queen...

That's why Duck only played the first few minutes of quarters. The offense went through him for a few easy baskets, but he got gassed quick and became a liability.
Queen just doesn't fit, IMO. Tweener size, slow feet, no defense and no way he plays alongside DC.
I think there are guys that can contribute right away at 11 and solve other weaknesses. He's a good passer and decent scorer, but I don't think that's enough to justify using a semi-high pick.
I think most picks after 10-ish come down to preferences and opinions. Nothing is guaranteed. I would prefer if the guy we get at 11 hits, he hits in areas of weakness. I just don't think Queen does that.

You don't draft for fit, which is what Cronin just said last night. I believe at you need to offer different looks at the center position. Queen would give you something very different than Clingan.

Steven Adams offers something very different than Sengun. Queen is obviously very talented. All players at 11 will have glaring flaws.

Every time I see this thread I just can't stop thinking about how somebody decided to name their son a name which sounds so close to Dairy Queen.

That must have been part of the plan, right?

Agree to disagree. I like the idea of having centers that offer something different, but I think the meat and potatoes for a big should be defense and rebounding. You can get playmakers and scoring from other positions. Otherwise, we're in the same spot we were with Meyers Leonard as our back center.

Let's not start talking about giving funny names to kids. My old acquaintance's Mike Hawk and Clint Torres would feel bad. True story

I watched him play in person in the ncaa tournament this year. I was super impressed with the fluidity of his movement. My only knock on him was that I didn’t think he used his size as well as he could. I think he could be a good piece of a frontline rotation. I would like the pick personally but it is hard to say how he will project. He might translate really well into the modern game but I would like to see him do a better job of boxing out. He just doesn’t seem like a bruiser to me when in watched him.
