It's not simplistic to say the taxes and big government and regulations are the product of California republicans. If California tried to secede, the republicans wouldn't be able to stop it, or have much of a say.Yes, they do. So it would be a tad simplistic to say 'People from California are Democrats'.

Republicans used to be the party of science, industry and business. Then in the 1980s they dumped science and became the party of business and religion.
Really? I see you say it, but I can not relate.
Do you think republicans still are the party of science or never were the party of science?
Never thought about it that way. Since Nixion got out of the way, I alway thought of republicans as being the least obtrusive in governing my country. They left those of us working in science to our work. Even when my work became more about Banking, I found the republicans more helpful, especially in getting inflation under control. The democrats had been a disaster in that area.
After 7 years of Obama, what's the inflation rate?

How much can people buy with food stamps?
I don't know, but I hear they can buy Cadillacs, caviar, and cognac. I hear the 1% are all on food stamps, that's how they made their money.

Zero increase in the cost of living for Social Security and Veterans again this year. The third time this has happened, in my memory, all under Obama. Food prices and the cost of almost everything
older people need has nearly doubled under Obama, but they don't don't count food, energy and healthcare in the calculation. Obama has squashed any attempt to change this screwed up calculation.
I really am amazed you'd bring the SOB up!

Just in recently from the Congressman.
"Seniors should receive a cost-of-living adjustment every year. It’s becoming more difficult for seniors to afford the rising cost of living. Yet, defying all reason, the formula used to determine the Social Security COLA is based on the costs and buying habits of young families. The current formula relies on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for average workers, which focuses on things like education costs, clothing, technology expenses such as computers and iPhones, and gas prices not the essentials that dominate most retiree budgets.
The formula needs to be fixed.
The Bureau of Labor and Statistics already calculates a Consumer Price Index for the elderly (CPI-E)which measures the costs of items that dominate seniors’ budgets medical care, prescription medication, housing, and food. The CPI-E has consistently been higher than the CPI almost every year since 1982.
For the past several Congresses I have introduced legislation to require the Social Security COLA be calculated using CPI-E. If the formula this year was based on CPI-E, seniors would receive a COLA in 2016."
The zero inflation is bull shit! The zero Cola is a fact.
uh oh what o?

They don't count the things MarAzul said in the calculation. They count more/other things that reduce the COLA to zero. He's 100% right that those things (along with low interest rates) are killing retirees and others on fixed incomes.
Shrug. What I said was correct. What he said, that I objected to, was incorrect.
As for his larger point that his SSI payments aren't keeping pace with inflation in the things he spends his money on, I have no reason to doubt him on that.
CPI-W does seem like an odd choice - but not for the reasons he listed in his first post.
barfo
Nope. His post was spot on.
Social Security and other government retirement benefits are feeling the squeeze of ginormous debt payments (to the rich, who else can afford to buy T-Bills?) on the $18T national debt so they tie COLA to an inflation measure that means ZERO COLA.
To doubly fuck the retirees, the Fed keeps interest rates low so the debt payments are less, but at the expense of the least risky investments that seniors live off of.
Well this video is making rounds, and it's rather pointed.

Fuck that Heritage Foundation bullshit.
They don't count food, energy, and healthcare in the calculation. They include something other than food, energy, and healthcare. If it's food, energy, health care, and education, it's not food, energy, and health care.
