Do you think getting rid of the lottery would benefit the NBA?

  • Yes, the worst team should always pick first.

  • No, it would promote even more tanking.

I disagree because there would be far more NBA ready players this way and they would not get the big bucks for 2-3 years of development...that's what college and the D league should be doing. Developing players and getting them ready for the pros. If they changed the way teams build a team, they could also have salary rules that counter the big bucks win it all theory.
If college is used as a training tool for pros then the athletes need to be paid. I ready think it's bullshit you cant draft out of high school anymore. Thats forcing people to go to college who want to play. If a team wants to gamble I dont see the problem.

I don't think college should be the only way to enter the NBA...the D league, Euroleague, etc are fine but I don't think it's good to draft guys right out of high school. My point about college was aimed at scholarship recipients...if a college invests in you, you shouldn't get to bolt for at least 2 years...2 years in college you can earn an associates degree as well.

an education is payment, the degree that comes with completing it is a great asset, sports or not

Yeah but that education is way over inflated. Student loans are going to be the next housing bubble crash. Just watch.

I dont think colleges should be able to own people just because they inflate their prices so only the privileged and idiots willing to go into huge debt can go.

Athletes bring in far more revenue than their inflated free 40k education. Thats how harbaugh can make 5 million a year.

As an athlete id be far more concerned with a pro contract than a $80,000 communications degree.

Athletes get well taken care of while attending school. Very well taken care of

Part of that is because kids aren't thinking ofthe future the right way. What are you going to do with a woman's studies, ethnic studies or most liberal arts degrees? STEM degrees are the ones to go for.

And don't go to a college out of state. It's actually pretty affordable if you go in state

If I were commish:
  • 3-day. 8-team, neutral-site tournament between bottom 8 teams in each conference for 8th playoff spot; tournament results determine top 16 draft positions. Tanking ends.
  • High-school players may enter draft, but may choose to retain college eligibility if not drafted in first round. If enrolling in college, not eligible for draft for two years.
  • Rookie-scale continues, with first-round picks eligible for MLB-style salary arbitration after year 2.

I don't think tanking is as big a problem as people think it is. We just got our asses handed to us by the Sixers, a team built to lose. But their players and coaches sure didn't look like they were tanking. The lotto is a way for teams that need talent-- to get talent. It's fine as is.

And if this poll is any indication, it's not really that much of a discussion.

The Knicks get $300M for their TV contract, the Pelicans $25M.

Even playing field?
you seem to have totally missed the future tense of my statement Denny....this is not a discussion about present tense reality but rather an opportunity to discuss the possibility of changing the way the NBA structures the draft. Like I said, if a NY team has endless cash, good for them. I'm a fan who thinks profession athletes are grossly overpaid so I don't feel sorry for rookies making what trauma surgeons make in an inner city emergency room.

Poor teams still need goods players to help keep the league on somewhat of a level playing field. I do think there need to be sought changes.

If a team has a Top 3 pick, the next year the highest they can get is #4. Don't reward teams like Philly for continually taking.

Also, if a team makes the Final 8 in the Playoffs and had another teams pick, the highest it can be is #4. It's great that they made a smart move but a Title contender shouldn't be adding a To 3 pick as well. They'll still get a very good player.

I'd also like to see Compensatory picks for Top Tier FA's that leave with the spurned team getting nothing in return.

I think what they should do is cut the playoffs down to 12 teams. Ideally eliminate the conference seeding. Because the last 4 teams are usually not nearly good enough to complete in the playoffs anyway.
