Virtually everything I listed has changed in 3 years. The Blazers are better organization than the Kings, but they are closer to the Kings organization than the Warriors right now. Which one of my line items do you disagree with? They're pretty much all fact based assessments (minus the ownership)

Is this an April Fool’s joke? The Kings are the worst organization in all of sports. 16 straight years with no playoffs and that likely won’t change. Blazers won a championship 45 years ago.

You got me for a second!

Not just Lillard’s. And really its the cap itself that is out of control due to the out of control tv contracts due to out of control advertising money.
It's literally the same percentage of the cap it has been for awhile.

The only argument (which I've been saying for years) is that super max contracts should count the same as a regular max. That way you don't penalize small market teams that keep their stars.

Mariners 20 plus years without playoffs.

yeah, m’s and Sacto are 1A and 1B. The M’s literally just collected that bankrolled cash while Ichiro and as in uni. They didn’t even try to do more. I love Dame, but even Ichiro’s loyalty is 5x more (and Dame is a loyal motherfucker).

@BlazerBender

I don't get your argument. The cap is tied to a percentage of the league revenue. If your argument is the cap and contracts are too high you're literally arguing that the rich owners should be getting more of the pie. That can't possibly be what you're suggesting, is it?

No no. There should be a cap on the advertising as well. Simply too much money all around.
Big sports is like big business.

The NBA is a machine, if the money wasn't there do you think owners would pay them? Think of the entrainment and fanatic frenzy the highly paid players have contributed too. You and I would be on this site if the association wasnt a multi billion dollar league. Now you have college football trying to capitalize the money to be had.

Easy to be loyal when they give you fat stacks and all you have to do is go out and get a couple singles. No requirement to win any games. Most love Ichiro, but those were some dark days for me as an M's fan.

The money could be cut in half and there would still be millionaires and billionaires in sports.
I am just saying, in a time when the whole world is reevaluating the economy, priorities, etc, money in sports is over the top and could be used to help many other things going on.

I don't blame any one entity, i just believe its out of control.

Wasn't this supposed to be a Donovan Mitchell trade thread?

Entertainment in this country has always been a priority, yeah it is driven by big bucks and the market place.

Eh, I would say certain types entertainment.
I still think, as a society and for the economy, we need a shift somehow, someway.

People are willing to pay for play. College football is going down this path and before long all players will be paid which Im cool with, and then the networks and conferences will charge more for viewing in some ay.
If the coaches and universities can make big bucks why not the athletes?
Look at how many people pay for cable or streaming. When I was young television didn't cost other than the set itself. Phones and service was cheap too. Not as many comfort features people are willing to pay a premium for now.

oh I don’t disagree, but i still think its wrong in the long run and unsustainable. The market may correct itself.
Its another path to have a tiny bit of elite rich with all the fans in poverty type levels. The money from advertising trumps everything. Viewing games should be free.
But were are way off topic. :)

well, since this is an OT thread that has dove deeply into the tall grass of money in sport, Bill Burr has some thoughts on money, sport, and the WNBA:

I apologize, I am not following this.

don't apologize....my brain takes weird tangents all the time

you were criticizing the amount of money in sports. Meanwhile, the amount of money in sports is only going to increase. It's too much money for sure, but it has been too much for a long time

Dame's extension is 126M. If you make 50K a year it would only take you 2520 years to match. Maybe 2100 years with annual raises. That's a long time to stay in one job. On the other hand, if you stayed healthy you'd have 13-14 years of sick leave built up

Yeah. Its like trying to mop up the ocean for sure, but i do still think it is a growing problem that will hit a wall eventually. Fans will eventually get put off i think. End up paying more year after year to watch our favorite teams and watch the nba as a whole continue to raise everything.
To me, the nba is a hypocritical conglomerate. Talks about equality and all that but they are no different than the likes of amazon. If they truly cared, they would overhaul the system to let some of that revenue be released to the general public ir programs to help the general public to help equalize the inequalities they railed against the last few years.

Streaming is walking a fine line of affordability now. Sports should go more for an ala carte way of pricing. I don't want to pay for some Jethro channel, or religious cult network. I think sports fans ought to be able to access to their teams. The NBA, with League Pass has an option of just viewing your teams games if you're out of market. I use to pay 125 for the Blazers games which was way cheaper than the regular pass. But the NFL has made us buy NFL ticket which is way overpriced for many, and needs to offer a much cheaper ,your team only ,pkg. I'm different, i just don't care about the other teams if it's not against my team. Right now you have to purchase too many different platforms to access. It's almost as much as cable. Streaming was supposed to be different. If you don't care about live sports, it's super cheap still.

He wasn't a power hitter by any means, but during his prime, he was good for 25-30 doubles a year, and 6-7 triples. He's in the top-40 all-time for stolen bases, winner of what, 10 Gold Gloves? All while coming into MLB when he was 27? I don't care for the M's because of the lame ownership, and they waste every piece of talent that put on the field.

Another "farm" team for the big boys(Yankees, Dodgers). It's all on the ownership. I'm a Rockies fan , and the Monforts are totally comfortable with , filling the stands, banking the dough, and trading it's best players for cheese sandwiches, and a bag of chips to be named later. I basically have become a mainly 2 sport fan (Basketball, Football). Blazers fans can say they've spent the dough on the wrong dudes, but at least they spend it. The Monforts are more worried about their "Legacy of Cash".

Not sure I see a similarity to Amazon. One thing about paying athletes lots of money is that their high salaries create more tax dollars than the rest of us. If the general public wants free health care, free education, affordable housing etc etc etc, we need more tax revenue. You can't rely on the top 1 to cover it all. My guess is that these athletes actually pay their taxes.

Granted there are corporations that do not pay their fair share, but for the most part, most rich people contribute way more to the general public than the rest of us. Yet we love to blame our problems on them. I am not talking about those who raped the environment to make their money, I am talking about the entertainment industry. Even though it can be annoying when they flaunt their rich lifestyle, they do contribute by actually spending their money buying things.

Owners are supposed to be keepers of the flame. Not extinguishers of it. Yes the owners are the title keepers. But teams are the city's property. Owned by possession of the heart.

only comparing to amazon based on the size and money involved.
You are aware of all the right offs the rich get though right?
