OT Doncic may stay in Europe for another year

Leverage.

but what is he leveraging? Rookie scale salary is already set so it's not like an NBA team can pay him more and if he says he will stay a year could drop in the draft as well. Just not sure how this benefits him at all.

I could understand Sacramento, but Phoenix has been a good organization.

I think he’d go to Phoenix, his national team coach is there, but everything is pointing towards them picking Ayton. I think it’s sacramento that Doncic wants to avoid.

Does he have a buyout? Perhaps he wants to leverage whichever team drafts him into paying a portion of it. I know there's a cap on how much they can contribute ($700K), but anything that doesn't have to come out of his own pocket is a good thing.

EDIT: Also, if he does have a significant buyout, he could negotiate a signing-bonus into his rookie deal to get more money sooner (the only scenario in which signing bonuses are permitted on rookie-scale deals).

He'll play. This is much ado about nothing. His team is still in the tournament there and he's focusing on that.

Staying in Europe another year means delaying his big payday on his second contract after his rookie scale.

I believe he is out of contract but not sure as I had read an earlier article that stated Real Madrid was trying to get him to sign for another year.

If Doncic were to re-sign with Real Madrid, it would be for $2 million to 2.5 million euro a year, which means a max of about $3 million a year (and remember European teams pick up the taxes for players). However, if the Kings draft him his starting salary next season would be $7.2 million (with more than $35 million guaranteed over the first four years), which even after California taxes is more money. Plus Doncic would be starting the clock to get to his second NBA contract in four years, the one that likely will be much larger. On top of all that, with a return to Europe, Doncic would risk a potential injury that could hurt his NBA stock and cost him millions and millions.

Or like Rudy, maybe he loves playing for Real Madrid ...living in Spain vs living in Sacramento

Hard to beat Real Madrid in scenery and they treat their athletes like royalty plus he is young and already use to the environment. I just wish if a player doesn't want to come over that they withdraw from the draft and enter when they are committed to coming and not play these head games.over.

What the kid wants and what his agent wants may be two different things....better to stay where he's happy than sit at the end of a bottom feeding team's bench..

I don't blame Doncic for leveraging. He's already a millionaire, living a good life in Spain. I'm sure he wants to come over to the NBA, but he doesn't HAVE to. If the regular person had a safety net to fall back on like he does, they'd take advantage of it as well.

That’s not how it works.
People change their minds all the time....that's how it works..plenty of young people get scholarships and drop out of school even though they were projected to excel in some field...Rudy didn't like living in the states or playing in the NBA...he preffered Spain....he knows this kid I'm sure.

Watch Phoenix tank another year so they can get both.

He would have to pull out of the draft for that to be even remotely possible though. He would be locked into whatever team drafted him unless he wants to sit out a whole year and then re-enter the draft but as long as he plays over seas then his draft rights remain with the team that drafted him.

If he doesn't want to play for a crappy team, he should start playing bad so he can drop in the draft, haha ;)

I can see his point. SAC has been such a shit organization. Their owner is a moron, who thinks he's building the next GSW style dynasty, but he has poured a shit ton into the arena and the fans are back (100.3% of capacity for 41 home games).

Vivic needs to fire Vlade the puppet and hire a real GM. They are still several years away, but I think SAC will eventually turn it around. The good news is they are likely to have several more lottery picks to build around. They just need to hire a GM who knows his own ass from a hole in the ground.

If I was in danger of being drafted by the Kings because the Suns didn't, I'd think about it too.

I actually think Kings are a good place to be for a young player now. They got a lot of promising players who can grow together.

yeah and you get to play for half a dozen different coaches over a couple of years...different roster every dozen games...I've said for years that the King's should be jlprk's favorite team...constant change.

That's what I had in mind. It was a half-serious comment, but the timing of the draft lottery and talk that they want to pick him but can't justify it, makes me think it's actually being considered.

When does Euroleague season end? Any chance he plays in summer league?
