Doomsday Clock Shows End of Humanity in 2013

The "Doomsday Clock" will remain at five minutes to midnight symbolizing the end is near for humanity for the year 2013.

According to LiveScience, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists wrote a lengthy open letter to President Obama, urging him to partner with other global leaders to act on climate change.

According to the Bulletin's website, the "Doomsday Clock" "evokes both the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero). In 1949, the Clock hand first moved to signal our assessment of world events and trends.

The Clock moved from 7 to 5 minutes to midnight in January 2007 because of "the perils of 27,000 nuclear weapons in the world, 2,000 of them ready to launch in minutes, and the destruction of human habitats from climate change."
