There’s the dominant Ducks who race past most conference opponents with ease while equally dismantling subpar non-conference opponents.
Then there’s the more docile Ducks, whose offense fizzles against ranked non-conference opponents.
A dip in performance against better competition is normal. Oregon’s dramatic downturns, however, are quite stark.
In route to three BCS bowl game appearances, the Ducks are 33-2 against conference and less than intimidating non-conference opponents while averaging 45.9 points and 291.3 yards rushing per game.
Meanwhile, Oregon has averaged 17.8 points and 95 yards rushing per game in four defeats at the hands of ranked non-conference opponents, then No. 13 Boise State (19-6 in 2009), No. 8 Ohio State (26-17 in 2010 Rose Bowl), No. 1 Auburn (22-19 in 2011 BCS National Championship game) and No. 4 LSU (40-27 this season 2011).
Safe to say, Oregon must curb this trend in order to claim its first Rose Bowl championship since 1917 when the Ducks face No. 9 Wisconsin on Jan. 2 in Pasadena, Calif.
...The question is, can the Ducks defeat a quality opponent in a big game? More importantly, can they overcome all the deficiencies that emerged in each of their four big game defeats?
!!! Oregon is "docile" cause they lost 4 games to teams To teams that ultimately finished #4, #5, #1, and one sits at #1 right now. I'll look at the end of season rankings vs the (alot) more subjective season rankings (BSU #14 team? Maybe by the rankings at the time, but they were by no means "only" the 14th best team in the country. Want another fun fact??? Those teams Oregon lost to are a combined 52-2 Pending one win or one loss for this year's LSU team.
(yes I know that you didnt write the article)
