Oregon plays its final regular-season road game of 2011 on Saturday, when the No. 6 Ducks play at No. 3 Stanford at 5 p.m. (ABC). This was one of the most anticipated games in all of college football entering this season, and it held up over the course of the last three months, with ESPN's "College GameDay" bestowing its blessings on the proceedings by traveling to Stanford for the game.

The Ducks (8-1, 6-0 Pac-12) held steady in the polls this week after winning 34-17 at Washington, but moved up one spot to No. 7 in the BCS Standings. After this week, Oregon will return home to face USC and Oregon State. The Ducks control their own destiny in the Pac-12 North race, and can clinch a spot with a win this week and one more against the Trojans or Beavers, or if the Cardinal then lost to Cal, too.

The Cardinal (9-0, 7-0) beat Oregon State last week and are now two wins away from an unbeaten conference run, and three games short of a perfect regular season. Stanford can clinch the Pac-12 North and a spot in the conference title game with a win this week, despite having matchups with Notre Dame and Cal left this season.

Will ESPN's Game Day be on the Stanford campus for the game? It's the best game of the week. The only game with two top 10 teams playing each other.

everybody loves... Game Day

Most of the time when the Ducks talk about "faceless opponents" and every week being "like the Super Bowl," you figure it's just platitudes.

Not so, in the case of at least one player this week.

"It's been very nose-to-the-grindstone," UO offensive tackle Mark Asper said after practice today. "I didn't know if Stanford was this week or next week; I knew we had a big November, but I didn't know if it was Stanford or USC this week.

"Sunday night I started to call family and be like, 'who's coming,' getting things scheduled up. Somebody called and asked me if I had all the tickets I needed and I was like, 'I think so ... are we going down there? Which game is it this week?' I just got into the grind of things and just forgot."

By today, Asper of course knew the Ducks would be facing Stanford on Saturday in California. The Ducks were in the Moshofsky Center this morning to begin preparing to face the Cardinal, practicing in shells (helmets and shoulder pads).

Sticking with the weekly Super Bowl metaphor, Asper said that when the No. 6 Ducks and No. 3 Cardinal play, it won't be like one of those Super Bowls where one team got there by dominating all season, and the other made a late run to reach the playoffs and then pulled off a couple of postseason upsets.

"It's going to be one of those good Super Bowls where one team's undefeated and one team has one loss," Asper said. "Nobody backed their way in."
Compared to Stanford, Oregon is pretty healthy right now (something I've felt all along would be a likely edge for the Ducks given the two teams' styles of play, and the fact this game was scheduled for so late in the season).

Receiver Ben Butterfield was on crutches today after being hurt Saturday on special teams, where he's made his biggest impact this season. Also, linebacker Rodney Hardrick was there today, on crutches; I didn't see him at all last week and he's missed the last three games, among rumors of a knee surgery. (With four appearances this season, I don't believe Hardrick would qualify for a medical hardship waiver. UPDATE: Although as a reader points out, that's how much James Rodgers of OSU played last year before being granted a hardship waiver, so I could be wrong there.)

People Bama didn't lose to LSU.... LSU escaped!!!!!! 4 missed FG's in one game?!?!! It's over in regulation by six if that kid hit only 50%. BAMA didn't allow a TD and that's why they are ranked so high! No one has come close to LSU that way all season! LSU is sooooo fuckin lucky! 4 and 4! Four fumbles and 4 missed field goals.... LSU is good but we made them look great, and Bama beat themselves!! 4 and 4

Loved the read but the comments are the best. Love the SEC fans who seem to know nothing about conferences that aren't "the true conference" SEC.

That said, if the Ducks were to play LSU again on a neutral field, I think UO would still lose. And, as most of us know, the SEC is the better conference this season.

Stanford alum Condeoleezza Rice on The Bill O'Reilly Factor. They both just gave the Ducks major props!

Ted Miller Says...Oregon to New Orleans...for reals...

We're salty -- and remember kids, this defense is soft!

On the road, the Ducks held Washington to 17 points and 278 yards. That same Huskies offense scored 38 points and piled 420 yards at Nebraska and had scored at at least 30 in every game, save the visit to Stanford, when it scored 21 and gained 430 yards.

Oregon ranks 26th in the nation in scoring defense (20.78) supporting an offense that ranks last in the nation in time of possession -- by a a minute and a half. Sure, it gives up some yards, but its yards per play -- 4.79 -- is the same as Virginia Tech, which ranks 12th in the nation in total defense. In fact, the Ducks yards per play is equal to or better than 10 defenses that rank in the nation's top-25 and is comparable to five others.

Is Oregon's defense going to throttle Stanford? No. Alabama's or LSU's defense wouldn't throttle the Cardinal either.

But it's been taking notes, seeing some things that give the Cardinal trouble, watching some key injuries pile up (WR Chris Owusu, TE Zach Ertz, OT Cameron Fleming). Stanford averages 48.2 points per game and its season-low is 37.

The Ducks are going to hold Luck and the Cardinal to 30. Maybe 32.

And they are going to score 35.

Then, as the upsets and shockers pile up, and Oregon clicks in to No. 2 in the BCS standings on Dec. 4 (sending Boise State fans into an apoplectic rage), LSU will get a rematch in New Orleans.

Only it's going to be Oregon, not Alabama.

Re: Ted Miller Says...Oregon to New Orleans...for reals...

The Ducks couldn't beat LSU on a so-called neutral field. They'd certainly be hard pressed to beat the Tigers in their own backyard.

Re: Ted Miller Says...Oregon to New Orleans...for reals...

Our OL is playing a different game and take away a few turnovers....one never knows. Not sure that was much a neutral field - looked pretty healthily to favor them tiger guys.

Targus you're just a standard issue sports fan homer. Good on ya.

I don't think the Ducks would lose if we played again. We made a LOT of mistakes and our O/D line had a ton of new people in it. SEC is the best Conference that's pretty much undisputed now but the fans I was talking about are the SEC fans that don't think any team is even close to the level of any of the SEC teams and there were a lot making a ton of comments in the comments section, i just found those comments quiet amusing.

You'd be surprised how much the playbook would've opened up had one of them scored a TD or made it a two score game. Both teams were playing so conservative on offense that it was like watching grass grow.

Dang, sonny, looks like you and I can finally find something we agree on! The only question to answer now is if you'll be joining us at the team hotel for our bowl game? :biglaugh: You try so hard...but fall oh so short. :devilwink:

You're glass half full, I'm glass half empty. That's fine, but you never improve if you only focus on what you do well. That's why you have your "improves" in an AAR. Otherwise everyone is just walking around jerking themselves off at how great they are.

Enlighten me. What am I trying to do exactly?

Did you ever play sports? Because, most teams that are good DO focus on what they do well, so they can do it better and improve their strengths too. Win the day, all-star. Win the day. If that means "jerking off" then by all means, knock yourself out.

I take it that's a no on the hotel. Cool. I'll send pics. It'll almost be like you're there - you know, from one standard issue sports fan homer to another! :)

we might as well throw up the white flag as their OLine averages 6'5 303.

Oregon limps into this game with an OLine that only averages 6'5 302

Last time I checked it was your D-line playing against their O-line.

To be fair, they have been accused of being "soft and questionable." Now they're a pound smaller on average, which looks to an outsider like it spells D-O-O-M.

How does their O-line compare to UW's speed wise? I realize that Stanford is the better O-line etc. Just wondering if the Speed of the Ducks' D-line could cause them problems like it did UW's, who just couldnt keep up with the Speed rush.

Nothing that Stanford brings will even be close to the evil line size and strength that LSU has. In that case I think the Ducks have earned their blood stripes but Luck offsets that because he's 10X the QB that LSU has.

As I've said before we'll see who Luck has on the field to throw too. Injuries may be the deciding factor for the happy trees!

back when that LSU game was happening I compared the listed size of LSU's Oline to Oregon's Dline and vise versa. The results were about equal. Same was true with Auburn. Oregon has plenty of talent size & depth along their lines to hang with other elite programs... which they have.

Last I checked UW's Oline averaged 6'4 299 and they were dominated by Oregon's front 7. Talent wise they might be on a different level then UW but the size argument doesn't hold water. So sorry
