Interesting article...

I defend Nate.....a LOT....in here. That said, as Jaynes points out, it will be an interesting season. And, if the Blazers get a high-end GM, that may very well become McMillan's death knell.

We shall see....we shall see....

............As far as the Trail Blazers are concerned, I can't get a good handle on how good they'll be. Or not be. There was not enough of an exhibition season to get a solid feel for them, I'm afraid. But so far, I don't have a lot of optimism about this team.

To me, it's as if there's something missing. And I don't mean Brandon Roy. I just don't feel there's enough scoring. Enough good shooting. Outside shooting has been a question mark for this team now for about a decade and seemingly nothing gets done about it.

(And while I think the addition of Jamal Crawford was a good one, for people thinking he's a big-time shooter, well, forget about it. He's 41 percent for his career, which doesn't bode well considering he's not going to get a lot of wide-open shots out of this offense.)

And running an offense that's mostly pick-and-roll with shooters spotted up around the perimeter and no consistent low-post threats is the same prescription for mediocrity that this team has followed throughout most of Nate McMillan's tenure. And with so many new players, it's hard to imagine this group finding its identity in a rapid manner.

The big thing about this year, though, is that it's very likely a big transition season. With so many contracts expiring, it's probable that a lot of changes will be made in the upcoming offseason. And there's the feeling, too, that if this group under this coach doesn't get past the first round in the playoffs this time around big changes will be made.

I'm not predicting a major tear-down, because the makings of a good team are here in LaMarcus Aldridge and Nic Batum. But progress needs to be seen this season with this group for it to remain a viable part of the future.

I believe McMillan is probably more at risk after this season than ever before. Yes, he's constantly had to fight through injuries while coaching the Trail Blazers, but don't forget that even with those injuries, he's still had a decent roster capable of winning most of the time.

This season he's trying to pull off a massive change in the way his team plays, going from one of the slowest-paced teams in basketball to an uptempo club. So far, the results have been mixed.

I don't believe this is necessarily the way McMillan is most comfortable coaching. I'm not sure it will stick. And I'm not sure his team will be effective with it.

But I know this, the Blazer management team is going to make a run at an established general manager when this season ends. In most cases, if they bring in a big name or a guy making a lot of money, he's likely going to get to name his own coach, too. It's just the way it works in pro sports.

That could mean, quite obviously, the end for McMillan. And that's just one more reason this season could be a big franchise turning point. Will there be enough success to fight off the wrecking ball?

Or will one more year of playoff one-and-done mean changes on the sidelines and on the floor?....

Re: So, Dwight Jaynes Instantly Has Become Mediocre Man's Best Friend....

I wonder about the long-term direction of the team.

Honestly, if PA wants to sell, this coming offseason would be the time. They'd be about where NOH is now, but better...good team, a solid piece in LMA to build around, the ability to keep Wes/Nic/Wallace/Felton if you think that'll work for you, but if not, the ability to retool with lots of cap space. Not many high draft picks, though.

Or you could just stick with what we've got and keep trying to tweak it to a championship (which some might say is the DAL model that just won). I don't know that that's a good analogy, though...not yet.

I do think that if there's a new owner, you might see a high-profile GM/Coach combination (either like what Dunleavy was doing in LAC after Elgin, or guys who already work well together like Walsh/Bird or Jackson/Kupchak--not those specific guys, obviously) because of the myriad decisions and retooling that'll be looked at. But if PA keeps the team, I expect guys like Cho or retread GMs without many other options, who'll be for the most part de-balled by Nate and Larry and the Vulcans.

Re: So, Dwight Jaynes Instantly Has Become Mediocre Man's Best Friend....

I don't think many people give Wes Matthews the credit he deserves. He doesn't have the greatest if handles, but he can shoot and drive to the basket. Also Felton is very capable at shooting as well. Crawford is definitely streaky, but he still demands attention. No team will ever leave him wide open in fear he goes on a run.

I think our success will lie on aldridge. Will he be able to dominate the paint? Also another intangible will be giving the freedom to Wallace. I believe we are much better than many sort us out to be. Maybe after a 10 game win streak some may change their tune. Maybe we just need to get out of the first round?

So you're admitting your anti-Blazer?

I'm on vacation, so a tad bit slower than even normal, but I don't get how you arrived at that. Maybe my reference that he is Pro Blazer? All that means is that the powers that be will never suspend anyone if they have nothing but positive things to say, and never look at anything objectively

Had Mixum or OdenisGod said that before they were banned, they would have been because of it....IMO

Re: So, Dwight Jaynes Instantly Has Become Mediocre Man's Best Friend....

Dwight Jaynes hasn't been positive about the Blazers since the Reagan administration. I could probably print any opinion article by him the past 30 years and find him whining about one thing or another.

Re: So, Dwight Jaynes Instantly Has Become Mediocre Man's Best Friend....

Whenever I used to see him around the RG he came off to me as a miserable dude.

Fingers crossed.

All McDillon has to do to prove us wrong is actually win something other than a regular season game.

Seems a bridge too far though doesn't it?

Let's try and be healthy just one season under McMillan - post Z-Bo years - and see where that gets us.

Sooner or later you're going to get the hang of this words and language "thingy" I just know it.

Wait...

Jaynes or Mediocre Man?

Sort of a personal attack. Good for you being able to get away with it. Others weren't so lucky.

I am awesome, and have met Dwight as well, and he seems like jerk. I can only assume he is talking about Dwight since I have not had the pleasure of meeting Mick

I've met Mick. He's good people. He was working for the Blazers when I last saw him.

Oh that old Chesnut. Have you wiped the Houston series from your memory?
(wouldn't. Blame you if you have)

There is absolutely no evidence available that Nate mcmillions is a good NBA head coach. Yet so many of you defend him as if he's your 2nd born.

What is it exactly this guy has on some of you?

11 years. 1 nba playoff series win. He's lost 2 series as the higher seed. Nope... Just wait until he has a perfectly healthy roster. Then he'll show us!!!!

Most NBA coaches come and go, though. Really, there's very few "elite" coaches out there.

what a load of crap. Repeat it 10,000 more times Sunshine to be sure you're right

I'm of the opinion that NBA coaches don't make that much difference unless they're really bad. Pretty sure that NM's team's consistently improving and him consistently being reupped by those professionals who are insiders on whats what is solid evidence he's not one of those guys

Those professionals that have continued to draft and re-sign players with injury risk over and over? Those professionals? Those professionals that are pretty much a laughing stock around the league? Those professionals?

Did you see the sudden difference Rick Adelman made in the Wolves last night? And even if you're right, your statement justifies McMillan's leaving just as well as his staying.

OddEnormous, you've returned after 6 months for another one-night stand. How long will you stay this time?

So in your mind the Blazers front office isn't a joke? Because I know people here in Houston just laugh when we get into the subject of front offices. I would venture to guess that if you went on realgm or something and asked which front office over the last few years is the biggest joke, Portland would either win, or be right there

Re: So, Dwight Jaynes Instantly Has Become Mediocre Man's Best Friend....

Texas is another planet. I won't get into politics, but the state is a joke here in the Northwest.

Were you laughing it up when they brought in Wesley Matthews for only a MLE? How about when they moved Joel & Cunningham for Gerald Wallace or Blanky & Outlaw for Camby? How about when they resigned LA for what now seems like an absolute steal? Those are 4 great moves for current starters that some jokers mocked at the time.

I would venture to guess that if you went on realgm or something and asked which front office over the last few years is the biggest joke, Portland would either win, or be right there

people are free to hold whatever opinion they choose even on planet Houston. Mine is that Portland's front office has assembled a solid club that I enjoy watching play a great deal. You seem to whine about every coach and GM Portland has had often claiming the masses are with you. They aren't, sorry

my guess is the laughter you're hearing isn't with you

Always amazing when this stuff goes unpunished. Seems like a personal attack out of no where, but oh well?

Houston, who hasn't made the playoffs in two years and then fired Rick Adelman, even though they had a winning record both years. That Houston?

Aren't they the joke at this point? Portland has made the playoffs with a guest star filling the GM spot the past two years.

What's up with you this year? Trying out my victim card from 2008? :)

Edited - oh shit, that was probably a personal attack by me, even though I attacked myself too.

ATTACK!!!

Would you get over it already???? Sheesh, are you really that butt hurt that two obvious trolls got banned? They both had posting styles that consisted of constantly baiting other posters. The board is better off without them - and it had nothing to do with the content they posted. It is actually possible to criticize the team without baiting other posters. The mods explained this to you already. What part of it don't you understand?

IDK. the OP's thread title really does allow for some serious trolling.... jus' sayin.
