Eliiite go for simpler backgrounds and texts for now. Even a plain coloured background is better in this case. Are you using photoshop?

www.deviantart.com, download some simple brushes and just do some light brushing for your BGs right now. www.dafont.com, for text, dont use Base 02, whatever you do. www.psdcentral.net for your pictures, all perfectly cropped so you dont have to worry about quality or cropping errors. This is how I started and I'm pretty good with PS now, I made both the sigs that I have in my signature right now.
