In his first Q-and-A for YES, Ian Eagle says his sense is that the Nets traded Richard Jefferson because “Nets didn’t believe that Jefferson and Carter could co-exist any longer”. Eagle doesn’t elaborate but says the team chose to “build this team around Carter and Devin Harris” and implies RJ had more trade value. Carter, he says, “didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes” before but now must lead a young team.

It's more accurate to say that RJ couldn't co-exist with Carter.

Vince is willing to do whatever the team needs. RJ wants to do whatever the team needs as long as it's what RJ needs.

There it is.

Not sure that I agree. I don't see how Vince has changed his game at all.

It is strange how Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson are painted as selfish malcontents by some on here, while giving Vince a pass. I don't recall this criticism of them before Vince Carter arrived.

They weren't malcontents then, RJ wasn't selfish, and the team was winning. Losing changes people. Kidd actively sabotaged the Nets, and RJ started listening to the people telling him he should be a superstar instead of sacrificing for the team.

Interesting. Who was telling him?

Maybe these people you speak of were telling him he needs to help the team on the offensive end. Kidd isnt a scorer and VC needs someone else to help with the scoring load.

Why? The Nets went to the finals with a team where nobody averaged 15ppg. RJ is not a superstar. He's not even an All-Star. He was clearly putting himself above the team last year. His reward was an all-express trip to Wisconsin.

Haha. "all-expense paid". I can't edit on this thing!

Vince can't co-exist with anybody. He couldn't do it with Tmac, left before he got a chance with Bosh, and now RJ. Vince is kinda like AI (so many experiments: Stack, Hughes, Robinson, KVH, Iggy/Korver, Webber, etc)

Nothing like revisionist history. McGrady didn't WANT to co-exist with Carter because he couldn't stand being second banana, which he would always have been in Toronto, both in the eyes of fans and the coaching staff. If anything makes this clear, it's the interviews given by McGrady and his mother to, I believe, Sports Illustrated after McGrady left for the Magic. Cheap shots aimed at Carter (and the organization) showing a resentment that he was the more well-regarded player.

It's too bad you couldn't swap their personalities or talent. The Nets would had been much better off if they could have.

Vince didn't want McGrady to leave. Carter wanted him to resign with the Raptors and wanted it to work. Except McGrady felt playing beside a hugely popular Carter at the time would over shadow him so he wanted his own team and spotlight. And Vince left Toronto because he didn't like Raptors management, not because of Bosh.

Yeah that is true, Vince came out and said that things could have worked with McGrady. I know he didn't leave because of Bosh, I was just saying that he didn't give it a chance. Same thing with McGrady, he didn't want to wait for Dwight Howard to develop, he wanted instant success. It must run in the fam.

Can you elaborate about RJ listening to the wrong people? This is the first I've heard about this. Is it true, or just a hunch? Based on the interviews of his that I've read since he's been a Net for 7 years, he has always come through as a thoughtful and insightful person. It seems out-of-character that he would change that after 6 years.

Yeah but there were like 5 people averaging 15pt and then you add the rest of the bench.

Someone had to step up the scoring. VC and RJ both had to average 20+. The only other person that was going to average 15 would have been Krstic, but he hadnt recovered completely.

My main issue is why trade Jefferson and get someone who is is like 1/3 the player he is in Simmons. I know Yi will be good and makes up for it some but they have this big hole at the 3 now, is Adam Morrison a possibility?

Simmons is the salary dump.
Yi is the young prospect.
Unfortunately no draft picks but Yi was a high pick in his draft.

So you think that RJ changing his game and becoming a far worse player helped the team?

How?

His play speaks a lot louder then his interviews. All of these guys have friends/family/agent telling them that they are being held back and they should take care of themselves. Why should RJ continue to be unselfish and sacrifice for a team when the franchise player doesn't care and the team has no chance to win? Here's an opportunity to get that ppg average up!

I've read blogs and articles by reporters where they have eluded to his selfish play as if it was a dark secret in the halls of the organization.

That is not what I said.

Someone had to score more. It wasnt going to be Kidd and Krstic. So that left VC and RJ.

It is so funny how people RJ selfish.

RJ avg. a little more in assists last year. He avg. the same amount of rbs. Yeah he took more shots, but Frank last year said he had given RJ more plays. Where the year before RJ hardly had any.

VC is our main scoring option. RJ should have been the second option. Only problems is many here say that VC is a very good passer, but this is the reason he took less shots. So people label RJ for being selfish and taking shots away from VC or other teammates, but you agree with VC passing the ball when he should be taking more shots.

Anyway, the real issue was RJ's Defense, but the whole team had defensive issues

WoW!!!

These are the same reports that have been telling us that Sean Williams is the best player in camp.

Maybe RJ is a really competitive person that doesnt like to lose and wanted to score more.

I must have missed when his scoring more helped the Nets win more games.

The old RJ sure seemed to be more effective in that area.

You are funny.

But why arent you saying that VC taking less shots didnt help either. Oh, but he is such a great passer.

What have we won since VC has been here?

This back and forth is pointless.
