HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP) — The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island has erupted, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit about an hour after the volcano began erupting.

By 1 a.m., USGS officials told Hawaii News Now that there were reported lava fountains shooting about 165 feet (50 meters) into the sky and feeding a growing lava lake within the crater that used to hold water.

David Phillips, a Hawaiian Volcano Observatory spokesman, said the agency was monitoring the situation.

"We will send out further notifications on Kilauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes as we observe changes,” he said.

The USGS said it received more than 500 reports of people who felt the earthquake but significant damage to buildings or structures was not expected.

An advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in Honolulu, warning of fallen ash from the volcano. Excessive exposure to ash is an eye and respiratory irritant, it said. The agency later said the eruption was easing and a “low-level steam cloud” was lingering in the area.

Kilauea erupted in 2018, destroying more than 700 homes and spewing enough lava to fill 320,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. An area more than half the size of Manhattan was buried in up to 80 feet (24 meters) of now-hardened lava. The lava flowed over the course of four months.

Yeah good one. Or we could just say natural selection is working fine the way it is.

*Yellowstone explodes*
I’ve heard that if Yellowstone ever does explode it will make Krakatoa look like a pimple, and that the entire west will be impacted in an absolutely major way. Let’s hope it keeps the pop in the bottle for a few more centuries.......

Good time for an update.

Mt Etna in Sicily has become more active and put on a nice lava show. There is a good video on youtube

Volcanoes in Barbados and Guatemala also more active, putting on small shows

Earthquake activity is still higher than normal, in many areas of our world. But below serious danger levels. For now.

My house sits on top of the Hayward fault.

Just checked, your fault has been quiet. Bay area relatively quiet, just a few very small quakes.

There have been swarms of small quakes in S CA, going on for a month now.

One med size quake off the OR. coast on the San Andeas fault, a couple of days ago.

I’m here now. After 2020... if this is my time, it’s my time and I’ll go down in a blazer of glory.

FWIW,

Even though activity levels are still higher than normal. This activity is less than when I started this thread. There was a 3-4 day period back then that scared me. If the trend continued worse, I feared a major event was a real possibility.

Also, there has been so much earthquake activity in such a short time. New lines are showing up on the fault maps. One starts in New Mexico up into CO. The Kansas area also may have a fault line.

My question is. Are these old faults coming alive, or, new faults caused by so much wave movement of the liquid core?

Just a friendly heads up. Not sure most of this info is being reported by regular news outlets.

Earthquake activity around the pacific region has drastically increased over the last week. And continues as I type this.

This includes increased activity in North, Central, South America, Indonesia and Asia.

The quakes are both shallow and very deep, over such a huge area, and in such great numbers in such a short time, that more than local movements are involved.

Also, in many areas there is a very large increase in the movement of magma, such as Yellowstone and Hawaii.

You probably are aware of the two large volcano explosions in Indonesia within the last week. These 2 volcanoes are over 700 miles apart. And may only be the begining of more explosions in other regions.

There are several "expert theories " worth knowing.

The entire pacific crust may be shifting. If so, this has the potential to cause major chaos and destruction.

The movement of the entire crust may be causing wave action within the liquid core. This large area of magma movement may result in more volcanic explosions.

This is the time to prepare for a major shtf chaos event. Stay alert.
It's Good News Week
Sorry for any spelling errors. My old eyes need new glasses, but, with the covid chaos, I'm staying away from unnecessary trips to town.

Have you thought about moving?
You know how hard it is to find affordable housing in Bay Area? Been here 22 years, have deep roots, literally, with all my fruit trees. Sooner or later, since I rent, I will have to move and it's going to be very tough, remodeled the whole kitchen, painted, draperies, really made this my place.

And everywhere in Bay Area is earthquake zone.

I didn't read at first and thought this was in real time. Still pretty cool looking either way.

Pre-Quakes?
