I watched a bit of the
Spurs-Grizz game and I have some thoughts. First, Memphis's Mad Genius coach has fully implemented his policy of just substituting in waves, so players like John Konchar, Cam Spencer, Jock Landsdale are getting quality minutes. I think this might be helpful for Edey because it means he's unlikely to get winded, because he's only in for short bursts.
Second, he got most of his points because he was single-teamed by Luke Kornet (and a couple of times by Jeremy Sochan!) and he just turned to either shoulder and dropped in a jump hook. Very simple stuff, but it must feel so liberating after getting swarmed when he was in college. Now, granted we all wish Clingan would develop a go-to offensive move like that, but it's not like he's doing anything fancy, and he's not being treated like the star player. The true test will be what happens to him in the playoffs, once they start getting there.
His defense is largely just that he's MASSIVE. Now, he's surprisingly mobile for a big guy, but he seems a little top-heavy and he doesn't strike me as somebody with natural shotblocking instincts (which Clingan absolutely has, otherwise he'd be a scrub given how poor his hops are). He's just
in the way. Now again, that's no small thing (ho ho) but let's chill with the Yao comparisons just yet.
