This is at least better news than the reports of Christians being slaughtered in Egypt since the "Arab Spring" brought "freedom" to Egypt.

Egypt’s new interim prime minister broke into tears in front of journalists

on Sunday as he spoke about the state of the country’s economy, saying it was “worse than anyone imagines.”

Egypt’s transition in the months since Hosni Mubarak’s ouster has been rocky, with protests against the military council leading the process, an increase in crime and the battering of the tourism industry that was once a pillar of the economy.

Kamal el-Ganzouri, the third temporary prime minister since Mubarak’s ouster in February, said his priorities were the restoration of security and economic progress.

At one point in his news conference, el-Ganzouri became teary eyed as he recalled seeing “an Egyptian man on TV saying I want security, not bread.”

He said austerity measures were needed to start reducing the deficit but that no new taxes will be imposed. He did not elaborate on exact steps.

El-Ganzouri said his government will not consider loans from the International Monetary Fund until the outlook of the Egyptian budget becomes clear. In the summer, the IMF offered a $3 billion loan, but Egyptian officials turned it down.

The IMF is projecting Egypt’s economic growth to be just 1.2 per cent this year, compared with about 5 per cent in 2010.

1.2% growth is "worse than anyone can imagine"? Egyptians must have lousy imaginations.

How can an economy be damaged by thousands of people sitting around in protest of the government? I thought that was a definite driving for economic growth.

How can an Arab government with an economy growing at a 5% clip, and with women playing a role in business, be overthrown with the support of the USA and its President? By all accounts, the new 'government' is a loosely organized band of thugs who rape Christians and steal money from others.

Contrarian Ed O. is a dullard these days. Reality doesn't stand up to your faux and contrived arguments.

Egypt is a disaster. It's worse of now than a year ago.

So you think that I think that a bunch of people sitting around protesting is good for the economy?

Do you really think that I was posting that in something other than sarcasm?

Go ahead and keep calling me a dullard if it makes you feel better.

Gee, I don't know. Maybe the people didn't like Mubarak?

with the support of the USA and its President?

We weren't all that involved, as far as I remember.

By all accounts, the new 'government' is a loosely organized band of thugs who rape Christians and steal money from others.

That's sort of fascinating. So the Egyptian military is "loosely organized"? Is raping Christians worse than raping other people? Can you steal money from anyone other than 'others'?

So they decided to rebuild. Maybe they'll get a high draft pick this spring and get a superstar. Mubarak was getting old and couldn't jump anymore. In any case, it was their decision to make, so I'm not sure what your beef is, unless your last name is Mubarak?

Egypt has too many liberals. If they'd sell the naming rights to each pyramid they'd bring billions into the economy. Quicken Loans Pyramid, Madison Square Pyramid, Chesapeake Energy Pyramid, Staples Pyramid.

All hell is breaking loose in Egypt. Who could have guessed that the Muslim Brotherhood would be more repressive than the Mubarak regime?

Agreed PapaG, the US should not intervene. Unfortunately that's not the neocon way.

Let them sort out their own problems. All we do is overthrow governments and have them spit back in our faces.

Great stuff, Papa. In the film you see why the pig is kicking her in the boobs. She and a couple of other demonstrators were trying to drag away a demonstrator who had been similarly beaten up, and the pigs caught up to them and apparently killed them.

Oops--did I use the vernacular of the 60s? Must remember Orwell's year came and went and we all started pretending.

I looked again. A bunch of demonstrators were dragging away the woman, but it slowed them down. As the pigs caught up, demonstrators broke away one by one until only one was actually caught with her. Both got kicked many times, she for the second time since she was already unconscious, which is why they had been dragging her away. She is no doubt dead now.

Speaking of women, where I come from kicking is considered a woman's way to fight. That's how they train the pigs and torturers from around the world at Fort Benning, Georgia.

The Muslim Brotherhood doesn't control the military, does it?

The same tactics are used daily by police in cities all over America, Asia, and Europe.

Hard to say at this point. Groups even more militant than the MB are staking a claim to governing Egypt. Removing Mubarak, and celebrating is some accomplishment, left a huge power vacuum in Egypt, just as I posted on this board when it was happening, and Obama was bragging about it.

CAIRO | Sun Dec 18, 2011 1:43pm EST

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's two leading Islamist parties said on Sunday their separate party lists secured about three-quarters of votes cast in the second round of a parliamentary election, extending their lead in the three-stage vote.

A source from the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) said it was on track to win about 40 percent of votes for party lists, based on results from most districts.

A spokesman for the ultra-conservative Salafi al-Nour Party said its list received about 35 percent of votes.

In the first round of the six-week poll, the FJP won about 37 percent of votes for lists and Nour secured about 24 percent.

The poll is the first since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February. The West long looked to strongmen in the region like Mubarak to keep a lid on Islamists, and has watched warily as they have come top in votes in Tunisia, Morocco and now Egypt.

PapaG, not to quibble with your sig, but I think in this case true sarcasm does need green font.
