You've been wanting to ask me this for a bit I'm sure. I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to know I'll give a genuine answer. I find myself having these conversations often with white acquaintances that are curious about racial issues. For some reason they feel comfortable talking about this with me. I never really have to have them with my white friends and family because they already understand their privilege whether y'all believe it exists or not.
I've never condoned whiteface (I was like holy SHIT Dave!!! I couldn't believe he did it). I'll admit I laughed my ass off at Dave and Eddie playing those characters. I don't think they were being racist by playing them either. The Jewish character in Coming To America was genius. Dave's humor is comedic genius as well. He just has that ability to just skirt the line.
While I'll agree it's (whiteface/blackface) funny (from both sides (black jokes are funny to some people but they're still racist). We hate blackface not only because it's only used to ridicule and further separate us, but it was used in place of what could've been a black actor.
Just like I don't use the term "white boy". Because the day my 41 year old ass is called "boy" is the day you'll see a racist eloquently put in their place.
Julianne got flak because she was ignorant of the fact that wading into those waters (whiteface/blackface) is kinda treacherous. I don't think she was being racist at all. Just HELLA naive.
Now those fucking blackface Halloween parties are racist AF tho...
So we agree. mocking a black person in black face is stupid and wrong.
