Well, it's been 12 seasons since they went to the finals.
Huh? 12 years ago, the Bulls and Sonics played in the Finals.
Not only that, the Lakers record before last season? 42-40. They weren't exactly seen as contenders last year until a few things happened in their favor. The Grizzlies handed them Gasol, and the Spurs lost Manu (basically). Although I'm not sure they wouldn't have lost to the Spurs, Manu being out did play a part (much like the Spurs starting the season w/out Manu, and losing Parker played a big part in their "slow" start this year).
The Lakers record after 17 games last year was 9-8. Ours was 11-6. Not that we're going to go to the Finals because our record is better after 17 games vs their record last year. First, we'd have to trade for an all star while giving up Freeland, Raef and someone like S-Bo. Secondly, we'd have to get something more productive out of our C spot.
Don't forget also that before last season began, the Lakers were handed Derek Fisher on a platter. Now, I wouldn't wish what his family is going through on anyone, but it is somewhat unfair that he got to choose to go to the Lakers at WELL below his market value, which gave them the cap space to spend money somewhere else. I mean, come on! He chooses to play for the Lakers, fine. They should still be charged his old salary for cap purposes.
