ESPN Looks at How Donaghy Fixed Games (may have)

I firmly believe that at the very minimum, between 2000 and 2003, refs deciding the outcomes of games was rampant, with a wink-wink from the NBA.

Yeah it's a shame, Blazers would have played the Pacers in the Finals...a cakewalk. But, that cakewalk was put in place for Phil Jackson and the Lakers.

The ultimate conspiracy theory would be the NBA allowing and/or encouraging game fixing, so as to boost league profitability by having the big market teams win, and double dipping in the shadows by being one of the groups making hundreds of millions betting on rigged outcomes.

Didn't those cakewalk Pacers beat the Blazers both times they played that season?

I remember them being nothing compared to the Lakers. The Lakers swept them I believe in the finals

Not to mention ratings

Yes, the Blazers missed a shit ton of shots in the 2000 loss. But that entire series was rigged HARD against us. Watch the games. There never should have even been a Game 7. And rewatch the final game itself. The refs were tilting the court against us before, and during that stretch of missed shots. They created and nurtured the environment for that to happen. Then the Kings got screwed as bad or worse two years later. That's when the whole world finally started calling foul, the whole world was talking about the NBA in the same breath as the WWF, and the league had to improve it's image.

Yes. I'm bitter.

If the investigation didn't inform David Stern about Tim they would have wired Tim and found out that refs like Scott Foster and Ken Maurer (still reffing) were fixing games too. There's a reason the NBA leaked the Tim story to the New York press to stop that from happening. Ken and Scott are dirty.
Conspiracy theory time: Perhaps Tim was fixing games for the mob, but Ken and Scott were fixing games for Stern.

Absolutely that could be the case and why Stern leaked the story to the New York press.

I can tell you that the Lakers are getting a lot of come back wins this season.

Did LBJ meet with the NBA before signing with the Lakers? That would be the ultimate conspiracy theory!

Good read, thanks for sharing.

Terrifying thought really...

A few things I have noticed about how refs control games...or at least appear to.

  • No calls/missed calls
  • Calling a quick succession of fouls on a player to get them into foul trouble - especially our big men to weaken post defense.
  • Calling on the floor fouls vs shooting fouls...where no free throws are recieved and it hampers momentum. Usually, not calling enough to get opponent into penalty. While calling more shooting fouls for opponent to get them to the line for points.
  • 3 secound fouls, double dribbles, carries, etc
  • Ticky tac fouls

Techs, Some players look at the ref and its a T, some guys spend 9/10ths of the game whining and yelling at them with very few techs.
When teams go on runs and its a big TV game they’ll often try to call fouls or let a team get away with more to stem the tide.
The “2-minute” rule, where all of a sudden they allow defenders to commit fouls in the last two minutes so they can say they let the players decide the game, the irony is that the Players breaking the rules are actually deciding the game...

Also CC I gotta say, your writings was good when I got here, but its getting better all the time. Thanks for the work your doing.

Refs also know how to cover their asses with useless makeup calls.

When fans start to get pissed at shitty rigged call, refs throw the fans a bone with a ticky tack hand check, no shots, no change of possession.

Or they wait for your team to steal the ball, and when an advantageous fast break is about to ensue, suddenly there is a backcourt foul called on the other team.

They know how to keep it looking even while accomplishing their goal.
