ESPN Roundup Merged Thread

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

You just don't trade away a top 5 player in the league to get rid of a bad contract, unless you get something great in return

We could give them a young, talented and inexpensive lineup back!

Bayless, Rudy, Batum and Outlaw! Plus, of course, the expiring sampler plate of RLEC, CFEC and TE.

Money, young players...it's the classic "king's ransom in prospects for star player."

It is possible. You just have to believe. Close your eyes and click your heels together, and repeat after me. There's no PG like Chris Paul. There's no PG like Chris Paul. There's no PG like Chris Paul.

Look, it's not a coincidence that KP is from Kansas. He is Dorothy.

So true. Repped Barfo.

I think they get more financial relief from my proposal of Raef, Bayless, Outlaw or Webster or Batum, and Joel
for Chandler, Peja, and CP3pio.

Gives them a good core of kids to build around and a huge amount of $$$$.

(Gives us a few championships, but that's just collateral damage).

Edit: having seen Minstrel's post - yes, we could give them Rudy too. Why not?

I'm not sure the word "few" can be applied to double-digit numbers.

Why not?

CP3 and filler

Bayless + RFEC + Outlaw

then,

our new TE + Sergio + Rudy for

Lee of the Knicks

CP3/Blake
Roy/Webster
Lee/Batum
Aldridge/Frye
Oden/Pryz

Surprisingly, the most ridiculous part of that post is that you put David Lee at small forward.

Sure it can.

"After the Blazers won the first few championships with the Honorable Rev. Dr. Oden, a dynasty was established that lasted more than 100,000 years, ending only when the Earth was destroyed by the chipmunks, which had acquired fusion technology in the Peruvian Rabbit Wars."

Still no update to the roundup after 2 hours on ESPN. Makes me wonder if they are trying to sort out some serious information or if Chad Ford finally fell asleep at the keyboard.

Chad Ford has been pulled? Could he have been traded?

Hopefully not to Portland.

Lee is 6'-9"

I actually have Aldridge at SF in my mind, but on paper, list Lee as the SF with LA as PF. [just for you, I offer my post!]

LA is effective when popping out on the wing - this permits Lee, our SF! to move down low 50-60% of the time.

We'd only have to make adjustments when the oposing team has a small SF - but hey, like one coach once said, "let the other team adjust to us - why do we always have to make adjustments to the oposing team?"

there ya go.

Not suprised eh? :tsktsk:

Consider it similar to listing Vince Carter at SF, when the guy is a 2!

Chad Ford: I know we have basically written off any chance of an Amare Stoudemire trade at this point. But I found it interesting that a Memphis source insisted to me that the Grizzlies had some dialogue with the Phoenix Suns as recently as Wednesday about Stoudemire. According to the source, he Suns continue to insist that Rudy Gay be in any deal for Stoudemire. The Grizzlies won't give up Gay, I'm told. It makes you wonder, though, if the Suns are still talking to other teams.

Yes, with Alvin Gentry at the helm, the Suns have scored 282 points in the past two games and Amare has been huge. But it's also a fact that the Suns have to find some way to clear $7-9 million off their cap if they are going to avoid paying the luxury tax next year.

• All eyes are on Portland right now. As of early this morning the Trail Blazers were still talking to at least three teams: the Nets, the Bucks and the Bobcats.

Sources say the Blazers still prefer a deal for Gerald Wallace, but are struggling to get something done. The Bobcats turned down an offer for Wallace yesterday, but came back to Portland last night looking for more assets for a Wallace deal. The Blazers have refused to part with Nicolas Batum so far and don't want to take back Nazr Mohammed and his contract in return.

The Bucks have had ongoing discussions with the Blazers about a Richard Jefferson and Luke Ridnour swap. But it sounds like the Blazers want more assets (read Ramon Sessions or a first-round pick) to take back Jefferson's contract.

The same is true for their talks with the Nets. Last night it sounded like there was some agreement on players. The latest has the Nets wanting Raef LaFrentz and Channing Frye for Vince Carter and Maurice Ager. The outstanding issue is the Blazers' insistence that the Nets include the Golden State Warriors' 2011 first-round pick, owned by New Jersey.

KP playing hardball. Well, it seems that if nothing else, we're making sure we get more than fair value back.

Whoa. If Outlaw isn't in the VC deal, kudos to KP.

Whoa. If Outlaw isn't in the VC deal, kudos to KP.

I think he understands that NJ is trying to "shop" Vince and is now trying to see how far NJ is willing to bend. The Nets are hemorrhaging money at 30m a year, so not a bad idea to change your stance near the deadline to dupe Thorn into thinking he should've done the original deal proposed. So when we get back to 11am PST and we offer the same thing Thorn bites.

Sure, it's a major goal, but not at the expense of the bigger picture of where the team will be when Oden, Aldridge, & Roy get to the top of their games in 2-3 years. Making the playoffs this year is a big step and it would give the team valuable experience, but nobody reasonably expects them to do more than maybe at best get out of the first round. Compare that to positioning for a long run at multiple titles and I think you'll agree that any trade now has to fit with that objective or it's best to pass on it.

I completely agree that the thought should for two years down the road, and perhaps even for next season. depending on what we see the rest of the year.

A bit more on the ESPN update page on Washington that I found interesting...

The league sent out a memo this week describing a number of different potential luxury tax scenarios this summer. The league's hypothetical case had the luxury tax dropping to $69.4 million. That's one reason teams are scrambling this week.

Along those lines, several executives have told me to watch the Washington Wizards closely today. GM Ernie Grunfeld has been pretty adamant that the team wants to keep together its core of Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison. But the Wizards are projected to go over the luxury-tax line next year by more than $6 million.

That means the Wizards are going to have to move someone. If they don't make a move now, they are taking a huge risk.
In the summer, they can no longer trade for an immediately-expiring contract that would alleviate their tax burden. They'd have to find a team under the cap and try to move a player like Etan Thomas. To do that, they would likely have to give up cash and draft picks and bring back nothing, just to get a team to take on his salary.

That's led to some talk of the Wizards and Knicks discussing a deal that would send Jared Jeffries back to Washington along with Malik Rose in exchange for Etan Thomas and Mike James.

update at 8:15 PST

No talk about Portland. All about Eastern Teams: Cle, Wash, NY, NJ. A tiny bit on Clips and Rockets.

the one interesting line I gathered from it...

Granted it says they won't trade butler, but you always have to wonder if he is truly untouchable.

Trade or no trade I am loving this day. Barfo in top form is a treat.

Some will be disappointed...

Henry Abbott, TrueHoop: A plugged in source just told me that the Blazers are done, and will not be making any moves before the deadline.

Of course, a great offer at the last minute could change that, but that's considered unlikely.

What's this about? All that talk and no big move?

Part of this, I think, is that they have been driving a hard bargain. Another part of is that they are in a position to use Raef LaFrentz's cap room this summer, plus their new trade exception, when the market will be depressed thanks to the economy. Portland will likely be able to make either a lopsided trade or a free-agent signing.

Another part of it is that I'm convinced Portland gets into some trade talks as pure intelligence gathering.

By negotiating with the Nets about Vince Carter, the Bucks about Richard Jefferson, the Bulls about Luol Deng, the Kings about John Salmons, the Bobcats about Gerald Wallace -- and a zillion other such talks -- the Blazers get real insight into what everybody really wants. They get to fill in the the blanks about the 29 other team strategies. It's like seeing the other team's playbook.
