Evan Turner becomes a Blazer

I saw some Boston fans saying he was a lot better at the 2 than 3 and we're going to regret trying to play him there.

If signing Evan Turner keeps even one liberal hipster from moving here, it's money well spent.

Wait, you mean there are still more of them elsewhere?

This isn't a bad signing at all in terms of player addition. In terms of cost, whew this is a rough year. But honestly though, the available marquee players were shrinking. Would you rather not sign anyone at all? I think Olshey had the wisdom to see Whiteside is gone, Durant isn't happening, not sure on Howard, what if we can't get Parsons? You move onto the next player in that type of role (Parsons' role) and Turner was next up to grab before we had to go even further down the list. ALL things considered, this isn't a bad signing. Although he's not as appealing of a name as Parsons, he's not a bad player and fits a bit of what we've been doing in terms of acquiring athletic forwards (although the ones from the last year or so had been on bargain deals). If we can snag Howard or Ezeli I'd say successful off-season given the fact that we were never going to sign some of those big names. If we end up with Aldrich/Mahinmi along with Turner, it's gonna be a let down but I don't think you can fully blame Olshey for the ridiculousness of this year...

We got Turner for 17.5/year.

Solomon freaking Hill who averaged 4/3 on 15mpg just got 13/year from the Pelicans
Lakers got Mozgov for 16/year
Teletovic 10/year
Bayless is getting 9/year

That's just the nature of this off-season. This is the new NBA, at least for now. If Turner can get us some decent production, that price tag, despite being 150% of what Curry is paid, won't look so bad. Hill now is getting more per year than Curry. Crazy.

Would've loved to get Lin for 12, and still would like to get Howard or Ezeli, but this is just a rough year overall with much slimmer pickings than I think perception would imply.

It took a while to come in off the ledge. This is almost beyond unbelievable in that this is who the Blazers get....the FA NO ONE WAS TALKING ABOUT.

Can we pull a Deandre Jordan and pull the contract off the table before he actually signs? I understand no one would ever want to sign with us again, but that is no different than now.

That was the first thought that came to mind with me as well. If players can back out, why can't teams?

Wonder how long before Dame bails. At least we can match Crabbe and Harkless so we are essentially keeping them prisoner, Have fun guys I'll be in the bar.

I spoke to a friend of mine who has a number of family member in various NBA positions. He actually brought that up. He said Portland is so lucky to have Dame here but at some point if he doesn't get some help, how long until he wants to go somewhere that he can get some actual help?

:smiley-bigsadeyes:

Evan fucking Turner? I'd rather just keep Harkless. This can't be real.

If they were going to spend this much money, how about on your own guys who can actually shoot?

Who did we have to outbid for Turner? Seriously, who else was going to give him this much $?

A very good question. I don't recall seeing a bunch of teams rushing to bust down Turner's door. He was a bench player for goodness sake and #31 on Woj's Free Agent rankings list. If this is what Portland has to pay for a player no one else wants, that does not bode well for future free agent classes when we don't have as much money.

Turner is a better fitting replacement for Henderson alongside Crabbe.

Great....so a ton of money for a guy that was the 3rd string SG behind CJ and Crabbe?

Shooting guards who can't shoot 3s are really on demand nowadays.
I hear Curry is being traded for Elfrid Payton right now.

24%....that is what he shoots from '3'. If they want someone who can create, has length and can actually shoot, Luis Montero is sitting right at the end of the bench for $16M less. Given the money they just spent on this bench guy, I'm not sure that for the money, that wouldn't be better.

Feel sorry for the all the season ticket holders.... Thank God the Timbers can provide their fans with legitimate playoff contenders.

Seriously. Portland could bring everyone back and add Turner and they might actually end up worse in the Playoff rankings if the Grizzlies are healthy and keep Conley. I'm not sure what this does to make them better given that now probably are out Crabbe or Harkless. Either that or Portland will end up spending $40-45 million on those three players which doesn't seem like the best use of cap dollars.

Disappointed.....desperation.....overpaid......some of the words coming to mind right now.

You can't fault him for going after a quality guy who chose to go elsewhere. He did make a move that made the team better, and we're already a really good team.

At this point, I'd like to see him match Mo and Leonard.

I can see us running with Mo, Turner, and Aminu if we need defense. I like how Mo can guard PGs reasonably well.

Say what u want but it's a great signing, he's even better than Crabbe and having two Crabbes as our SF rotation is the way to win ball games.
He seems like a nice dude, the contract is relative to the new market and it's better value than many of the deals.
Now we need to do good with the remaining money

I don't see how a guy that shoots 24% from 3 at age 28 fits Stotts system... He is such a bad shooter he makes Aminu and Harkless look like the splash brothers... 18 mil per??? I'm speechless... Only way this day gets worse is if Neil blows remaining cap room on 35 year old slow plodding center Pau Gasol...

He can guard Klay and other big guards.
He can help CJ run the team when Dame is out.
He attacks the paint and is an effective mid range shooter
Yes he is a shitty 3 pt shooter, but at least he knows it and only takes 1 per game.
He can create his own shot
he can pass, dribble and rebound.

Sidebar, from following this dude on IG and Twitter for a few yrs (since he was indy) he is hilarious. So there's at least that

I think of him as an expensive, better version of Gerald Henderson - just hope we keep Moe, Crabbe and Leonard - because adding Turner to last year's team is actually a very nice upgrade.

Don't click the link if you can't stand purple and piss. But...

http://www.insidesocal.com/lakers/2016/06/30/evan-turner-interested-in-lakers/

Questions arose about Turner’s 3-point shooting after only shooting 24.1 percent last season. Yet, Turner made up for that with an efficient mid-range game by shooting 52.9 percent from shots within 12-14 feet, according toNBA.com. After shooting 14.5 percent from 3-point range in the first half of the season, Turner made 52.4 percent of his 3-point attempts after the NBA All-Star break.

Portland is just an ugly market for top level FAs this is why I wanted to tank on a pointless year. This summer really showed what all the right things happening (Lillard exploding, CJ emerging, Playoff success, coaching success, etc) does for us

And thats really nothing…

Top FAs are not coming here. Drafting is our key. Trading too. I’ll never forget this season and summer. It really was an excellent case study.

and with him we may not need to spend for a backup PG as he can do that, just get a cheap guy like Frazier for "insurance"

FOH with your logic

I think the only thing he does significantly better than Harkless is dribble. I just don't see how Turner addresses our weaknesses in any meaningful way.

The two things Memphis could offer that we can't are: a) no income tax, and b) to be the #1 option/star.

Given he signed there, it was about the money or he didn't want so much to be a good team player; this is Dame's team, he's the man here. If the latter, then fuck him... I'd rather have Turner.

Hey, he shot .500 from 3 with the Pacers in 2013-14 (12-24).

passing and dribbling, we needed another guard/wing that is good at it and neither Hark or Aminu or Crabbe is close to average at that, got it?

The funny part is that you think this validates your point about tanking, but I doubt it has changed anyone's mind. But I guess if you keep posting it over and over you will get a couple converts.
