OT Every Game Calabro Pulls a Boner

It's amazing how winning and playing well cures a lot of things. Broadcasters included. Now that we see Calabro and Hurd in their groove, I'm on board. Calabro's excitement is contagious like Wheels. I can't say Barrett had the same effect. I do miss Rice for his levity.

You must have loved Barrett's "And it's out of bounds Portland ba........NOOOOO they say Houston ball WOOOOOW" That got annoying hearing him play referee and then being shocked when he was wrong

Calabro does that all the time.

Gotta say that Calabro and Hurd are growing on me. Nice to see Calabro getting more animated and into it the longer he’s with the team. I used to wonder if he was on Valium or something. Oddly, I even find them far more easy to ignore than M&M over the course of the game, which allows me to give more focus to the game. But the one thing Calabro does that just drives me absolutely crazy (I have a low threshold) is when he refers to the basket as “the cup”. Gawd I hate that! This is basketball, not golf.......

I actually like that... and prefer it when someone is driving.

I agree with the OP, that Calabro routinely says things that show he isn't paying attention to the game. Reporting the wrong call, naming the wrong player involved . . . . I really don't recall MB making remotely as many mistakes. Calabro is fine, but this is clearly one weak spot. The part that bugs me is that he clearly wasn't watching the game and it usually happens when he is trying to be clever over doing his job.

I HATE THE CUP THING.

Drives me up a fucking wall. It's a basket, not a cup.

I haven't heard anyone substitute cup for basket. Occasionally I hear the word hoop or bucket but never cup. That would be dumb.

Colabro says it ALL the time, and it drives me nuts every stinking time. It makes no sense. A cup in golf is about the same diameter as a coffee cup, and like a coffee cup, it has sides and a bottom. The rim in basketball is way bigger than a coffee cup, and has no rigid sides and no bottom. Calling it a cup makes no sense at all. Makes me think I'm watching golf when Calabro says it, which makes me want to sit on my hands and whisper, not leap to my feet, clap and cheer my fool head off.

So, poor analogy that kills excitement, instead of encouraging it. Especially when there are already plenty of perfectly usable things to call it: basket, rim, hoop etc.

But I jump up and clap my hands and cheer my fool head off anyway. 50 years as a basketball fan is not to be dissuaded by a play-by-play announcer co-opting a term from another, less exciting sport.

BTW, this is my only real complaint about Colabro. Other than this, he's fine. Not perfect, but perfectly fine.

Calabro does that all the time.
Well not nearly to the degree that Mike would haha. It's one of the reasons I can stand Kevin. Although I tend to listen to the other teams broadcast though.

"Cup" doesn't bother me at all. I wouldn't even notice it if I didn't read about it here all the time. Every announcer tries to develop colorful iconic signature phrases.

Rrrrrrip City!

I'm just having a hard time believing the phrase "pull a boner" is a euphemism for making a mistake. That shit is hilarious.

Calabro should desperately try every phrase he finds in this thread.

I last read it used that way in the mid-60s, but Lanny appears to be older than me. It was in a fan magazine, and some famous young actor (the teen media was much stronger then) wrote, "I made a lot of boners on dates," then recounted amusing anecdotes of embarrassing errors with famous young actresses. Even then his use was anachronistic and seemed ghost-written by someone older. Otherwise, it meant the same as now.

Just having fun with you. Just giving someone a hard time who enjoys giving others a hard time. You can dish it out. Just seeing if you can take it.

You have to test me after all this time? I give and receive more shit than anybody here in NerdVille. You know that.

Well then, just doing my share to balance it out. You've been giving out a lot of shit lately, only fair that you should also be on the receiving end.

Plus, you've been making it easy lately. Your predictions have been WAY off. This makes two of the last three years that you seriously underestimated this team.
