Limited/Unlimited?

  • Driving layup over 2 defenders (probably an And-1)
  • Spot up '3'
  • Jump hook of a scramble
  • Jump hook of a cut (over Draymond)
  • Turn around jumper in the post
  • Kick out '3' (over Draymond)
  • Relocation spot up '3'
Unlimited - About the only way he didn't score this game was in transition or off a lob dunk. Since we know he's got that down pretty darn well, I'm actually quite impressed with the variety of ways he scored in this game. That might be the most varied offensive repertoire on the Blazers roster.

Limited - But there is one area where he is quite lacking.....ability to create his own shot. His handle isn't such he can really get his own if the shot clock were winding down. That said, he has been able to create his own on the few post ups he's received. But he needs work on his handles and the power 1 or 2 dribble pull up along with a step-back.

He gets PLENTY of arc on his shot so it's just a matter of creating just a little space to get his shot off and be comfortable with it. What is different with Jake than almost any player I've seen is when he misses, most of his misses are straight on, but 'long'. So it's not that he isn't getting a good shot, just needs to develop his touch a little more and work on the handles. That in turn should get him more assists or opportunities to create for others or get the hockey assist because he has shown to be a willing passer....just doesn't get/create many of those opportunities.
So, he's limited offensively in the same way that Klay Thompson is? OK--I can handle that.

I think Jake is certainly the more athletic of the two, not as quick with his release, and better on the block. Could he ever get near Klay's level? Who knows....but I think there are other things he could do better that would compliment his catch and shoot abilities.

If he can take another step forward next season, we might have something special.

I always saw potential in him based on the way he moved. He's quick, nimble, athletic, and shows a good motor. His shot would not fall though, and he was more tenative

I agree with your assessments of his limitations, but I would add that, importantly, he does not try to force things he's not good at.

Wow? Not sure where that came from?
Handle, passing vision, finishing/scoring in traffic and from difficult angles are pretty limiting factors in his game imo.

Didn't mean he's not valuable. Just don't buy into some of the upside comps that some people throw around (Klay, Granger). I don't think he has the skill package or mentality be the scorer on that level of usage.

Might he be in the running for MIP? Not sure which other players are having break-out seasons this year.

I feel like it's worth mentioning that if Olshey operated as many here wished he would, Jake very likely would've been cut or traded quite a while ago.

Not to derail the thread because Jake's emergence has been arguably the most enjoyable story all year, but -- while it's certainly more rare than the other side of the coin -- this is the upside of Neil falling in love with his guys. Give credit where its due on this one...

If he'd been on this pace (really more of a minutes thing because he was shooting over 51% as a starter before all the DNP's) for the whole year, YES.

Got too late of a start in terms of consistent rotation minutes.

He's been surprising. He was horrible when I watched him in Summer League a couple of years ago.

Uh... finishing/scoring in traffic? Have you been watching the games?!?

From his Game #1 when Calabro was opining about his 'repeatable stroke', I've been hoping and waiting for what he is doing now. It was in garbage time, but there aren't a lot of players that can do what he did at any time so it was definitely a 'skill'

He struggled for a while with confidence/minutes, but his shot has always been a thing of beauty and he has always had the athleticism. He didn't just all of a sudden learn to cut. It was something he finally either had the opportunity to do or just said, 'fuck it, I'm tired of handing off to Dame/CJ all the time and deferring to them at every opportunity.'

How a few lobs, back cuts, etc weren't run for him before now is unconscionable....it's not like he just learned to jump.

just so nice to see a young Blazer playing with confidence and attacking the rim and not being a ET / Chief turnover machine.

Right when Layman is in there I see Dame actually look for him when he makes his drive so I think got more confidence in Layman then Harkless or Aminu on the offensive side of the ball.

I'd be curious to see what the rankings are in terms of who get the most assists on Layman's buckets.

My mind changed on him at a preseason game I attended when he went supernova against the Suns. He reminded me of a more athletic Peja Stojakovics due to the high, quick release and similar stroke on the 3 ball.

Another interesting way to look at these is to align the assist numbers with the lineup data in bbref.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/laymaja01/lineups/2019

For instance, Layman's got 10 assists from CJ in 544 minutes of court time, as compared to 7 from Collins in basically half as many (275) minutes. Turner's 25 assists in 273 minutes is a bit more impressive through that lens.
