Great Eggers Article On Meyers Leonard.
http://www.pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/216542-76024-leonard-shoots-for-his-chance
“It’s important to stay ready, mentally and physically,” says Leonard, averaging 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 8.9 minutes a game. “Not only being a young player but a young big. It’s been tough.

“Last year, I had a few more minutes than what I maybe deserved. The minutes were just there for me. This year, I got hurt early, Joel played well and I was out of the rotation. That was tough from the get-go.”

“He has handled it well,” Stotts says. “He continues to work hard. He’d like to play. Like we’ve told all the young guys, you never know when your number will be called. He’s staying ready, but there are certain times when frustration sets in. That’s human nature.”

It’s at the defensive end where Leonard needs the most work. At times, he is a foul machine during his limited time on the court. His instincts with help defense are lacking. Part of it is his youth (he turned 22 in February) and dearth of experience. Leonard didn’t play organized basketball until his freshman year in high school. He averaged five minutes a game as a freshman at Illinois before blossoming into a star as a sophomore, warranting the Blazers taking him with the No. 11 pick in the 2012 draft.

“There are a lot of things defensively,” Stotts says. “You rely on your big guys to help, whether in pick-and-roll situations or penetration, discouraging shots at the rim. The goal is that he’s able to react without thinking. That takes time; it takes experience.”

So it’s a Catch-22. Leonard needs time on the court during games to get better. He can’t get time unless he shows improvement.

All the while, Leonard has become a whipping boy for the Blazer faithful, who have belittled him on social media and sports talk shows and through website posts.

Asked how he feels he has been treated by Portland fans this season, Leonard pauses for a long time, searching for the right word.

Mixed?

Short pause. “Mixed,” he agrees, seemingly reluctantly. Another pause.

“I’ve shut down social media for a reason,” he says. Before he did that, “I heard it all (on Twitter). I’ve heard, ‘F you, I hope you tear your ACL.’ I’ve heard, ‘You’re a bust.’ That’s the reason I don’t look at that stuff anymore, and I probably won’t during a season. It’s just not worth it. I don’t ever listen to that stuff or buy into it, because mentally I have to stay locked in and confident in myself, or that will just kill me.”

Keep with it Kid, the Blazer Faithful are rooting for you.

Man, we have some d-bag fans. We all would love it if Leonard could fulfill his potential.

I dislike his lack of ability on the defensive side on the court and I've mentioned it several times this season. But there's no need for fans to say something like, "F you, I hope you tear your ACL."

We lack patience just like every other fanbase - but I still hold out hope that Meyers will develop into an asset.

I don't think Meyers will ever amount to anything at the NBA level, but damn, saying shit like that is pretty fucked up. I'll keep hoping a miracle will happen and he'll suddenly understand the game of basketball.

It's one thing to say "Leonar_", It's a whole other (and completely messed up) thing to wish injury on someone else for the mere fact you have no control over a situation.

It's a handful of extremists, on this site and others, who continue to wish the worst for "Leonar_," while simultaneously giving the supposedly NBA-ready CJ McCollum every benefit of the doubt.

CJ is older than Meyers, too, and was drafted higher, yet he gets a free pass for some reason after what has been a bust of a rookie season.

I say give both of the young players a chance, and I hope both make big gains this summer, and dominate in the summer league.

Leonard is mentally weak. I hope the best for him in Portland, he's a project and again, is mentally weak. I'm hoping he works on his game this summer instead of just lifting so he can get swole.

I still have the highest of hopes for Leonard. As long as he works hard in the summer, he has too much natural ability not to succeed. He may never be a great defensive center, but he has the soft touch of a Duckworth.

Leonard will be out of the league in 5 years. Who wants to bet?
If I was a betting guy, I'd take that bet.
Despite not being good, he has shown some amount of aptitude for some aspects of the game. Example: when he grabs a rebound he looks to make an outlet pass to get a fast break started. In the limited number of games I've watched I've seen him make several beautiful outlets that lead to an easy 2 points. Contrast that against LMA who waits for the entire back court to clear out before handing the ball off to a guard.
Leonard is terrible on defense, and that's pretty much the only reason he sucks. If he can learn to either be an adequate man/man defender OR an adequate help defender then that'll be enough to keep him in the league. All it takes is the proper coaching.

You just never stop bashing LMA, do you.

Ive always liked leonard. Everyone feels the need to jump on him since mo got better. Focus your anger on refs and lakers. Leave our players alone!

Man... I can't imagine sending a message like that to anyone, let alone a player on my favorite team. That's just horrible. Sometimes I really hate people. They can be so mean for no reason at all. Simply because they can.

Really? Not even...Raymond Felton? Haha. Actually, the only player I've had that much vitriol for is Derek Anderson...and kinda for Outlaw. But Outlaw was too dumb to deserve that level of hate.

F that. If he is going to be worth anything, I want him to retain his athleticism. If I were him I would hire my own coach.

this is just a silly thing to say. do you realize how many bigs in the league that cannot play? hell Jamaal Magloire could never really play yet he played what? 12 years?
Thabeet is still in the league what has he done to earn his roster spot?
Jason Collins can't play either. Yet he has a roster spot.
Nazi Mohammad?

Need I continue? I don't think so...
Point is big men that can stay healthy get long careers because 7 footers aren't a dime a dozen like 6" guards.

I don't wish injury like that on any player no matter the distaste...another prime example of people being empowered behind their keyboard with no fear of repercussions.

Closest I've come to anything was this year when we played GSW and Bogut was being a lil Bitch out there and Joel tossed it up with him. I was like "Knock him on his @$$ bulldog!"

Leonard better get his head obsessed about D Howard and Asik, like ASAP. Hes going to be thrust into a horrible position if he isnt mentally ready for this playoff series. Our bigs are going to be in foul trouble... and he is going to be getting minutes. Maybe alot.

I see value in him as a stretch 5 with Trob on the floor... as long as he doesnt commit blunderous fouls. Not many jumpshooting 5s...

I do have to admit its kind of a bitch move to let it get to you. I would have lol'd if someone said that and asked what their income was while I made 6 figures to warm a bench.

I don't see getting rid of social media as "letting it get to him." He just didn't want to expose himself to that kind of hate. I don't blame him. Easiest way to tune it out is to ignore it.

You've never let something get to you.. get you mad, sad? We're human.

Hard to believe anyone would wish a serious injury on a guy they don't even know . . . Oh, wait, I forgot about kobie . . .
