Favorite Movies?

[Sex Panther]

Not the 10 best movies ever.

Since the last thread about this was 2 years ago (or something like that :S). Try and make a top 10 and explain why.

1. Chinatown - Main reason why I wanted to become a director/actor when I was 6-7 years old. Too bad I sucked at both.

2. LOTR trilogy - A maserpiece. I watch it twice a year, once during the christmas season and again before my finals. I'll be doing that a lot in law school.

3. Taxi Driver - I could argue for hour about how this should be on every true movie lover's top 10.

4. Cinema Paradiso - Watched it back when I was 12, still watch it with my brother whenever he flew down from New York to visit me. Then we'd proceed to the Red Sox games.

5. Dr. Strangelove - Probably in my top 3, but i'm having a hard time kicking out Taxi Driver.

6. It's A Wonderful Life - Makes me

7. Blood Diamond - Iunno why, but it's such a good movie

8. Tokyo Story - I watched this film at an art house cinema in San Francisco. This film is often overlooked, it's crazy. Pure art.

9. Pan's Labyrinth - I thought it was overrated at first, but after another view, it quickly made me realize I was high when I first saw it.

10. The Diving Bell and The Butterfly - It's IMPOSSIBLE for me to leave this out. It could probably climb up to my top 5 on any given day/

Honorable mention:

- In the Mood for Love - I love asian cinema
- Legend of the Drunken Master - ^
- The Pianist - Better than _________'s ____. That's right, I (sorta) said it.
- Paris Je T'aime - Reason why I went to visit Paris with my girlfriend.
- Titanic - I don't care what anyone says, his movie was beautiful. Definitely better than another certain love-under-storm type movie)
- The Shawshank Redemption - Perfect directing and even better typecast.
- The Dark Knight - I could watch this once a week and never get tired of it.
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - No clue, but when watching Inception, I thought of this film.
- Inception - imo, Memento was a stepping stone so Nolan could amplify it x10.
- Gladiator - (Read The Dark Knight)

I'm giving a top 10 as they come to my mind, not a 1 through 10. I can't give a solid 1-10, though as I'm sure I'm forgetting some and I'm sure it fluctuates constantly.

1. Gladiator - Once a week type of movie. Maximus = ultimate bad ass

2. The Dark Knight - See Gladiator.

3. Raging Bull - Amazing acting

4. Taxi Driver - Same reasons.

5. The Godfather I and II - Why did they have to make III :[

6. Man on Fire - Denzel's character is bad ass. Plot was pretty good, acting by Dakota and Denzel was damn good.

7. Goodfellas - Great movie, great cast, great acting

8. Heat - De Niro + Pacino + Kilmer + diner scene between Bobby D. and Al + awesome shootout + inspiring The Dark Knight = an awesome movie.

9. Pulp Fiction - Quotes for days, awesome storyline, good acting...love it!

10. Casablanca - Was this the movie you were referencing to in your Titanic comments?

Honorable Mentions
-For the Love of the Game: I have no idea why I love this movie so much, but it is my top "man chick flick"
-Zodiac: I love the Zodiac Killer, great film by Fincher.
-Se7en: Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey were excellent, Pitt was just...ehhh
-American History X: Damn good movie.
-Gone Baby Gone: A gripping movie with excellent acting. This movie gives me high hopes for Ben Affleck's new movie, The Town.
-Casino: See Goodfellas
-Memento: Pure genius
-Inception: Pure genius
-Prestige: Pure genius
-Insomnia: IMO, Pacino's last great role.

And my ultimate guilty pleasure: Bad Boys II!

There's so many damn movies it's hard to come up with a top 10.

Great list, I loved 'Gone Baby Gone', I have faith in Ben Affleck, he's just had a long dark age, hopefully The Town ressurects him. And no, I was talking about Pearl Harbor.

And I loved Casablanca, but I've always preferred Gone With The Wind. Both great movies.

There are so many movies I've enjoyed. These are just off the top of my head.

1. Chinatown - Simply put, I love film noir, and this is one of the best. Maybe what makes me love it so much is just the ending, "Go home Jake, it's Chinatown" a city that the main character begrudgingly hates but accepts the fact that events happen that are out of your control.

2. Trois Couleurs: Rouge - This is seriously one of greatest screenplays of time. I love the pacing, I love the characters and I just love this movie.

3. Dr. Strangelove - It's hard to make a political comedy about the end of the world that's smart and witty but simply put Kubrick's a genius. Plus Peter Sellers gives one of the greatest performances ever.

4. There Will Be Blood - Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano give two of the best acting jobs of the last 10 years in one movie. Plus I love how Paul Thomas Anderson paints the protagonist in such an unlikeable and cynical way that you can't help but be intrigued by him.

5. Raging Bull - Probably the greatest movie about men's insecurities. DeNiro gives perhaps his greatest performance. "Never knocked me down Ray, you never knocked me down."

6. Ran - IMO the greatest adaptation of a Shakespearian play. Every scene is done with such grandiosity that's it hard not to appreciate it.

7. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - Greatest ensemble of acting ever. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are just amazing.

8. Spirited Away - This movie is so good, I actually sort of hate it. I'm jealous of it, I'm jealous of it's likable characters, it's story, and it's unbelievable visuals. Not based off any book it's just all originality. My favorite scene is the one where they're riding the train. Nobody says anything it's just pure atmosphere, pure bliss

9. The King Of Comedy - Probably the greatest social commentary on America's celebrity obsession. DeNiro, Jerry Lewis, and Sandra Bernhardt are excellent. When people think Scorcese they think Taxi Driver and Raging Bull but imo this should be right up there.

10. The Big Lebowski - One name: Walter Sobchak.

Wow, amazing pick. Yasujiro Ozu is one of the most underrated directors and this is probably his finest work.

Agreed. I'm a HUGE fan of his later work, most especially 'Late Autumn' and 'The End of Summer' (one of his more underrated works).

2. Omkara - Indian adaptation of Othello set in modern day UP. Amazing acting and music. Should have been sent to the Oscars but the Academy doesn't except foreign movies based on english literature

3. The Departed - This is what really made me look into watching Leo's old movies

4. The Dark Knight - went and watched all of Nolan's previous movies after this

5. Memento - superb twist, unique method of storytelling

6. Goodfellas - great plot, acting, direction

7. Inglorious Basterds - Actually clapped after finishing this movie

8. Kaminey - another engrossing Indian movie by the same director

9. The Dark Knight - nothing needs to be said

10. Children of Men - great long take at the end of the movie

Guilty pleasure - 40 year old virgin

If you like him you should check out Andrei Tarkovsky, another one of the great speculative directors along with Ozu maybe ever. Specifically when you get time check out his films Solyaris(Solaris), Zerkalo(The Mirror), and Stalker. Jacques Demy is also another good one.

Ilmago, I completely forgot about Children of Men. It could very well have been the 00's sci-fi noir 'it' film if had more of a backing.

I've only seen Stalker, and though it's not the most entertaining, a case could be made for it being the best film ever by some people (not me). And oddly enough, my fiancee bought me Solaris (criterion collection) a few years back but i never had the time to watch it. Then I sold off all my DVDs piece by piece for some cash (made like a grand in the process). now I gotta wait til it releases on blu ray. Stupid me.

My favorite is Fight Club. Acting, storyline, quotes, script. Practically everything is perfect for me.


As this is a sports forum I really think you should watch Any Given Sunday, it's about NFL's team and how hard it really is to keep everyone happy as we're talking about management and players. Even though I've never seen a NFL game in my life, it was great.
