The great 20th century choreographer George Balanchine was an immigrant from Russia. He created Stars and Stripes as homage to his adopted country. It was part of today's program at San Francisco Ballet.
First and second scenes are women. Third scene is men. Fourth is the leading couple. The leading man today was a Mexican immigrant. Fuck ICE and fuck Trump, they are sending their best. It would have been symmetrical to pair him with Canadian leading lady but company's top Canadian ballerina had starred in a previous dance. The final scene is entire company, danced to Stars and Stripes Forever, while back wall of stage becomes giant American flag.
Normally, after curtain falls, it opens up immediately for curtain call. This time several minutes passed and we all wondered why. Until it opened.
San Francisco Ballet has dancers from nearly 20 countries. As curtain rose, each dancer held a small flag from his or her home country.
No speeches needed. Perfect visual illustration. Immigrants make America great.
