Final Grades

Now that the season is over, we can look back on what was a phenominal year. What are the grades you guys would give each individual player on the team?

Edit - Also, Blazer's Edge gave me a good idea. We can divide their grades into a regular season and playoff categories.

Roy: Regular Season (A) | Playoffs (A-)
--> Most consistant player throughout the year for our Blazers. Really elevated his game to borderline superstar right now. People kept saying he won't be able to improve and he continues to prove them wrong. I look forward to watching him continue to grow. Its nice to have a player of his caliber on our team. Doesn't always give everything on defense but its tough to hate him for that because so much energy goes to his offense. Did well in teh playoffs and really carried us at times.

LMA: Regular Season (B+) | Playoffs (B+)
--> Started off the year somewhat cold and had a pretty bad slump a couple weeks into the year as well. Other than that he has really improved and continues to improve. His ceiling is incredibly high and him and Roy are great foundations for this team. I wish he would go into the post more because he has the skills. Hopefully him and Greg become the "Twin Towers" we hope they can become because their games really do compliment each other. Inconsistant in the playoffs but had a tough matchup with Scola and also had some great games.

Przybilla: Regular Season (B) | Playoffs (C+)
--> He was an incredibly steady and consistant pillar for us this year. I don't know where we'd be without Joel, especially with Oden's learning curve and injuries. He fills his role very well and is a good veteran leader for our team. He had an extremely tough matchup in the playoffs vs. Yao, but after Game 1 I thought he did a very admirable job on the defensive end. Still needs to improve his offense.

Rudy: Regular Season (B-) | Playoffs (C+)
--> I was pretty pleased with Rudy this year and he was a great addition to the team both on and off the court. I think he was our best rookie this year and still has a lot of room to grow. He needs to take a more assertive role in the offense and not just be a spot up shooter because he can be so much more than that. I think some of that is on Nate as well. He set the rookie 3pt record which made me very proud. He was solid during the playoffs, one of the better role players probably. He should have gotten more minutes in the early part of the playoffs but oh well. Its a learning experience.

Blake: Regular Season (B-) | Playoffs (C)
--> He really had a career year and I was very thankful to have him on our team this year. He has a lot of things he will never do well at, including defense, but his 3pt shooting was a very needed asset to the team this year. I will never forget that 14 assist quarter. He really let Aaron Brooks own him for the early part of the playoffs but then slowly but surely tightened up his defense. He would be a great backup for our team.

Outlaw: Regular Season (B-) | Playoffs (D+)
--> Solid regular season. He does his role well, especially for how much we pay him. He was clutch during the year and hits big shots for us when we need them. He has a lot to improve on, especially his defense and rebounding. He really can be so much more than just a scorer, but he doesn't seem to really want to. He didn't really show up in the playoffs and was very disappointing. I'm torn whether or not I want him back next year. I wouldn't just cut him, but if he can net us a good player (along with others) I think you pull the trigger.

Batum: Regular Season (C+) | Playoffs (C-)
--> The biggest and most welcome surprise on the team in my opinion. He does his role pretty well and was a huge part of our success after Webster was injured. He came out of nowhere and if you would have told me after summer league that Batum would start almost every game for us I would have told you we'd be in trouble. He has a lot to improve on though, but i'm very confident he will and will be our future SF. He is our best perimeter defender as well, and his Tayshaun-esque blocks and body style give us all hope for the future from the SF slot. Wasn't very effective in the playoffs but its tough to blame him. Eventually got replaced in the starting lineup.

Oden: Regular Season (C-) | Playoffs (C-)
--> Tough year for Greg, but a good learning experience. Contrary to some people's beliefs, I think he learned a lot throughout the year and that it will greatly benefit him next year. Extremely inconsistant and his foul problems were incredible but showed flashes of greatness. He has a lot to work on, but i'm confident with a full summer of being able to work on his game, get in shape, get down to college weight and hopefully regain more of his athleticism back that he will be back with a vengence. Sometimes I question his love for the game, though. He had some good moments in the playoffs but also was very inconsistant... the story of his season.

Sergio: Regular Season (C-) | Playoffs (INC)
--> Some really nice things from Sergio this year, along with some major inconsistancies. He really does well when he can run, which is tough because we don't run enough. Has great chemistry with Rudy and when he is on is incredibly fun to watch. Sadly I do think he is probably our 3rd priority at PG right now as Blake is better than him and Bayless has a very high ceiling, but everything can change with one trade and he can be a big part of this team next year. He needs to work on a lot, including shooting, defense, lowering turnovers and not over-dribbling. He gets an INC in the playoffs because he didn't really play enough to get a rythm and for us to asses his performance in my opinion.

Frye: Regular Season (D) | Playoffs (INC)
--> Not a great season for Frye. I know personally I expected a lot more from him, but maybe his injury right before the start of the year affected him more than we know. Either way he seems to have regressed. And though I like him as a person I don't think he would be the best fit for our team going forward. He has had some good moments this year and over the past 2 years for sure and I wish him the best. Didn't play too much in teh playoffs, but didn't play very well when he did.

Bayless: Incomplete
Webster: Incomplete
Nate: B+

Hey, you cheated off of Oden's test!

My grades aren't based not on some kind of relative scale of expectations for that player, but rather they are graded on where they fit in to the bigger picture of being NBA players (ie. an A+ means they played like a superstar, an F means they played like a guy who might be looking for a new career in couple of years if they don't turn things around)

Roy: A+ (I'd give more plusses, but he has to start playing better D)
Bottom line:Elevated his game from sometime/borderline all-star to legitimate superstar, top-10 player in the league territory, without him this would have been a 30 win season.

LMA: A- (First half of the season a B, second half a solid A)
Bottom line: Showed great improvement in his post game as the season wore on and his versatility on defense started to show as he consistently was able to defend 1-4. He still needs to get more aggressive on the defensive glass and use his inside game to setup his outside game (instead of vice versa) but all-in-all he had a great campaign and pretty good showing in the playoffs minus a dud in game 1

Przybilla: B+
Bottom line: What's not to love, gobbled up loose balls and rebounds like a hoover, played stout post defense and covered a lot of breakdowns from the perimeter and generally showed himself to be a true veteran presence and leader for this team in the toughness department. Career year.

Blake: B-
Bottom line: Career year for Blake proved that he can be a solid, mistake free point guard who can hit shots at a pretty decent percentage, but probably isn't your best bet as a starter. It's hard to complain too much, but I was still left wanting a lot more.

Rudy: B-
Bottom line: Not exactly a true rookie having played professional ball in the ACB for 6 years or so, but all things considered he played pretty well, helped space the floor and generally made the team look like they had a good hoops IQ when he was on the floor. Still needs to add some strength and bulk and do more than just jack up fadeaway threes, but I like the attitude and being unafraid to make the big play or take the big shot.

Oden: C
Bottom line: I know we all had high hopes for Greg coming into this season, but with the long layoff, injury woes, total lack of polish on offense and lack of discipline in the foul department it sure made it hard to get any kind of rhythm or feel for just how effective a player he could have been. High marks for efficiency, very low marks for "feel" for the game.

Batum: C+
Bottom line: Turned out to be a really nice wing defender and clearly understands the passing game and how to play team basketball, but the passivity on offense (unless Pau was in the game) and tendency to disappear at times showed why Nate only played him about 15-20 minutes a night. Still has a lot of work to do on offense before you could feel comfortable trotting him out there for 35 minutes a night.

Sergio D+
Bottom line: Let's start with the positive: Terrific passer, great court awareness in the full-court game, but absolutely terrible in the half-court against a team that plays even average defense, can't jump over a phone book, still can't hit reliably from distance, over-dribbles, takes chances he shouldn't, locks on to Rudy and used him as a crutch, gambles on defense or loses his man on the perimeter, can't fight through a pick and frankly has some of the worst body language I've ever seen when things aren't going his way -- I guess this is maybe my biggest beef with Chacho, guys whose shoulders slump and heads hang low coming back to the bench don't get me very excited about seeing them come back into the game any time soon.

Bayless: D
Bottom line: Wow, talk about a wasted year. I love the passion and the fire, but what the fuck happened to your jumpshot? I realize J-Bay got buried on the bench and didn't have many opportunities to get into a rhythm and that probably hurt his performances, but the tunnel vision on drives, because he didn't trust his pull up J (or his teammates?) and the over-hyper demeanor did more harm than good. Hopefully he gets back on track over the summer and comes back in with a vengeance, but at this point I'm not sure what to expect.

Outlaw: Regular season: B+, Post-season: D-
Bottom line: I can't remember where I heard this but I thought it was appropos: Travis is like that hot ex-girlfriend you had in high school who you knew was no good, but you kept going back to despite your better judgment. All-in-all he deserved some of the recognition he got for sixth man of the year and he got better as the season wore on, but sadly I fear the playoffs may have exposed him as a poor decision maker in pressure situations (especially against a smart committed defense).

Channing: F
Bottom line: Terrible season, very little hustle on the boards, settled for long twos on almost every shot, can't guard a chair, might be out of the league in a couple of seasons unless he ends up on a team that actually wants a soft, 6'11 jump shooter. Love your blog dude, but your game is not fun to watch.

Nate: an A-
Bottom line: You can't always agree with his substitutions, and there seemed to be a lack of creativity in his offensive sets, but how much of this was related to personnel and not by design is hard to tease out. Overall, he seems to be able to motivate the hell out of his guys, they seem to respect him, and he's done nothing but improve the team every year since he's been here. Teams this young just don't win like this, is that Nate or the talent? I tend to think it's both.

But Nate, if you have a real point guard next year can we get Greg rolling to the hoop maybe 3 or 4 times a game please?

Roy: A- ...needs to stay healthy for an entire year, even though he played in almost all games. Defense took a step back.
Aldridge: B+ ...improved post game, physicality... added a bit of a nasty streak. IMHO largest improvement on the year.
Pryzbilla: B ...sure would love just a bit of offense from him, and that improved FT shooting we saw at the beginning of the year. Defense, toughness, goodness.
Rudy: B ...very streaky, but when averaged out he was pretty solid. especially in the playoffs. Showed he can be a playmaker and hopefully will learn from some of the mistakes he made this year.
Batum: B- ....great defense. hopefully that shot gets better, and he starts to develop some ballhandling skills.
Outlaw: B- ...actually stepped up his game and attacked the rim a bit during the season. Still should be so much better than he is. Playoffs was exposed.
Blake: C+ ...good three-point shooting, but that's about it.
Sergio: C
Bayless: C
Oden: C
Frye: C-

Roy A+ : All star again and becoming, or already at, superstar
Aldridge A-: Rasheed's talent without the attitude, improving every year, I think he may become our best player
Przybilla B+: Love red ass
Fernandez B+: Hit the wall in mid season but rebounded well. Needs to work on defense, but he's still a rookie.
Blake B: A steady, unexceptional player who can hit some big shots. Brain cramps on critical free throws.
Batum B-: Nothing was expected of him; he was D-league material. Moved into starting line-up.
Rodriguez B-: Showed flashes but needs consistency. May be expendable.
Outlaw B-: So much talent, so little consistency. Makes too many bad decisions for a 6 year man but at his best a huge contributor. Unfortunately not always at or even near his best.
Oden C+: We saw flashes of the future. Tended to put too much pressure on himself.
Bayless C: Again, not much expected. He helped fill in when Blakie was down. Is there room for him in future?
Frye C-: I know it's tough to be consistent without regular PT, but he seems to have regressed.
Ruffin, Randolph, Webster, LaFrentz: Incomplete
McMillan: A-, the second youngest team in the NBA (youngest if you don't count Raef) improved by 13 games while playing 3 rookies significant minutes.
KP A: Some were disappointed in no midseason deal but KP does not usually do midseason deals. With most other teams scrapping for money and a big free agent class, look for some Pritch-slapping over the summer.
Allen: CTC, dude!

Here's mine:

Roy (A+): Established himself as one of the elite and best closers in the league - Mr. Clutch/4th quarter.
We have to get him some help though, or his body will break down. He showed more of a
mean streak this year, which was good. He also is the undisputed leader of this team.
LMA (B+): I'd love to see him rebound more, and be able to face up & get to the basket/FT line more. Also,
he needs to be more relevant late in games. I love how he makes adjustments though - He's a very
smart/heady player. Plays like a 10 year Vet.
Przybilla (A-): Gets everything out of his ability. Can't say enough about his leadership & toughness. Played in
every games this year, and was a big reason why we were at the top of the league in rebounding.
What a testament to his work ethic that he made himself into an (almost) 70% FT shooter when
he used to hover around 40 to 50%. I love this guy. Can you imagine if we HAD traded him last
off season (as some suggested) I know he's limited offensively, but he does so much for this
team. Thanks for your effort this year Joel - you made us proud.
Blake (B-): I love his grittiness and will to win. His decision making late in games, and sometimes inability to hit
FT's late in games is bothersome. Maybe he'll grow out of that. I still think he is best served as a
B/U - he'd be one of the better B/U's in the league.
Rudy (B-): Great shooter, and a good athlete. He needs to add strength and a mid-range game. His ball
handling is good, but he hasn't show the dribble penetration ability. I have high hopes for him
going forward that he'll be more than a spot up shooter and a guy who gets loose back door for a
couple of alley oops a month.
Oden (D): Disappointing year. I know the excuses (Rookie coming of knee surgery) He never showed the
ability to adjust to NBA officiating. He was picking up the same fouls in the Houston series he did
early in the season. He doesn't move his feet enough, he still comes out too far on pick/rolls,
and the most frustrating thing to me is that when he is in foul trouble he doesn't make ANY
adjustments. His offense is another story. He's way to slow with the ball and is off balance
too often on his jump hook. I have a hard time believing we'll see a whole new Greg next year.
But what can we do but hope for the best? I just hope that I'm wrong about his psyche
because there were times this year when I thought Greg didn't want to play. He looked bored,
confused, and depressed. I'm trying to be optimistic, but this guy scares me. If he
would have gone 13/9/2 (which I thought he would do easily) we might have won 60 games.
Our biggest weakness offensively is that we don't have a consistent post presence. For all
Joel's grit, he has no offense to speak of. Greg has to be that guy. I'm not saying 18-20, but he's
got to give us 14 + ppg. The biggest thing he has to work on is staying out of foul trouble. I hope
he dedicates himself to that concept this summer. I question whether he will or not though.
Batum (B): A 19 year old rookie to start the season. He showed the ability to defend whoever they matched
him up with. Played hurt late in the season which impressed me. Obviously, the offense needs
some work. I really like his future though. I think he could be a borderline all star player in 2-3
years.
Sergio (D): Careless with the ball at times. Unaware of the shot clock too often. Can't finish around the
basket at all. Doesn't shoot well. Dribbles too much (into the paint, out of the paint - where you
going Sergio?) And his defense is bloody awful. I hope they get rid of this guy. Question is, who
wants him?
Bayless (D+): If this kid can knock down a jump shot and play with some poise he'll be fine. I love his
competitive spirit, but he gets too jacked up sometimes. And I don't understand why he shot
the ball okay at Arizona and why he throws up bricks now. Maybe he just needs to relax.
I've heard great things about his work ethic. Interesting to see how he comes back next year.
Outlaw (C+): He giveth and taketh away. He hit some clutch shots this year and at times was the only Blazer
not named Brandon Roy that appeared to want the ball late in games. Continues to struggle
with shot selection though, and his away from the ball defense is tough to watch. I don't know
if we should trade him or not though. His contract is pretty good, and I'm not sure he's that
highly valued around the league. KP may have to decide to keep him, or give him away for
nothing. TO sure didn't help his cause in the Rockets series - he was really bad. But is Martel
really an upgrade over TO? I'm not sold on that. Obviously, between Martell, TO, & Batum
someone has to go. And don't tell me TO is our b/u PF. We need a banger, dirty work type
of guy to fill that hole.
Channing (F-): Get this guy out of here.
Webster (I): What do we have in this guy? I have no idea. Will he be a better player next year than he was
two years ago? A lot of "if's" with this guy.


Nate (B+): He's coached our team to improvement every year. He's a better coach than a lot of people
give him credit for. If there is one thing that irks me it's his rotation. He fusses around with it a
a lot. Some of it was out of necessity. He went back and forth with Sergio/Bayless and then just
seemed to give up on JB late in the year. The whole Twin Towers thing in the Houston series,
and going back to Frye early in the series looked like a reach (showed desperation IMO)
I still think he's the right man for the job.

These grades are based on the potential best contribution of the player. So Joel is graded differently the Roy.

Roy: Regular Season (A+) | Playoffs (A+)
--> Best Blazer player in the last 15 years. Portland wouldn't have won even 41 games without him. In the playoffs he faced two of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA and ate their lunch in 3 games. His worst outing in the playoffs was better then everyone but LA's best game.

LMA: Regular Season (B) | Playoffs (B)
--> Started the regular season with a D+ and ended with an A. Same tune in the playoffs. Needs to get better and handling the ball and develop a face up game.

Przybilla: Regular Season (A) | Playoffs (C)
--> Did everything anyone could ask of him in the regular season. Whether coming of the bench or starting he did everything he is capable of doing. The playoffs were going to be hard on him, and it pretty much was. We needed more rebounding from him and didn't get it.

Rudy: Regular Season (B) | Playoffs (C)
--> Played well when he was on, but he wasn't on in every game. In the playoffs he got owned by Wafer in more then one game, and only really was a factor in the two wins. Portland needed more then that from him and couldn't overcome his absence.

Blake: Regular Season (C+) | Playoffs (D)
--> Blake did a little bit more then I expected as a starter this season, but not by much. He was steady and didn't turn the ball over a lot. This came at the price of pushing the ball and taking risks. This didn't hurt Portland too much in the regular season, but it killed them in the playoffs. That is not the time to play it safe, and Blake can't play any other way.

Outlaw: Regular Season (B) | Playoffs (F-)
--> Played better then I thought he would this season. Nearly every game he started playing a D level, then upping it to an A by the fourth quarter. As far as the playoffs go, was he a complete disaster. Portland got nothing from him. Nate tried all series to find a way to get him going, but nothing worked. He flat out sucked. If he had even played at a C level Portland would have had a chance to take the series.

Batum: Regular Season (B) | Playoffs (F)
--> Batum played a huge role on the team for someone who looked like a total bust not 2 months before in the summer league. He showed enough flashes of brilliance that Portland shouldn't trade him away unless they get someone very good in return. Unfortunately, the playoffs were a complete disaster for him. He couldn't do anything about Artest and hurt the team by passing up shots he was taking in the regular season.

Oden: Regular Season (C) | Playoffs (D)
--> He played about like what I expected from him coming off of micro-fracture surgery. He struggled at time, but showed flashes of great play. He did make the same stupid defensive play what seemed like 200 times. Why oh why did he try and close off the base line on quick point guards when he got called for that obvious foul every single time? Someone needs to make him a DVD of every single time he did that, though they may need to make it a 4 disk set. In the playoffs he rushed every single shot he was given. He seemed nervous and played scared on offense. His saving grace was defensively in the second half of every game. He seemed to get more comfortable then.

Sergio: Regular Season (D) | Playoffs (F)
--> On offense he gets a B, on defense he gets a F- for an average of a D. In the playoffs his offense sucked as well. He IS an NBA point guard, just not on this team. I hope he can go to New York and run like hell every game.

Frye: Regular Season (F) | Playoffs (Z-)
--> Frye started the season on IR and played his best during that period of time. His best contribution was his blog and attitude. No doubt Frye knows he sucked this year. My suggestion to him is to learn Turkish, since he is going to be the MVP of the Turkish Basketball Association next year.

Bayless: Regular Season (D) | Playoffs (Inc)
--> Bayless showed glimpses of awesome play surrounded by terrible play. I wanted him to come out and settle the point guard debate once and for all. Which he did by being so bad that he didn't deserve to play. In the playoffs he didn't deserve to play. As it turns out, none of the other point guards did either.

Webster: Incomplete.

Nate: B+
--> Though I didn't agree with everything the man did, numbers don't lie. A 13 game improvement this year was an amazing feat and Nate deserves credit for it.

KP: C
--> Trading for Bayless during the draft didn't really have much of an impact outside of sending Jack on his merry way. He would get a B except he lost his nerve at the trade deadline and stood pat which I still feel was a mistake.

Mike & Mike: F
--> They get an F for pretending they don't complain about the officiating when literally half of what they do every game is exactly that. When they weren't doing that, Rice would actually have useful insights. Too bad they came few and far between.

The Bald Faced Idiot: F
--> Mr Canzano, I respectfully request you suck a bag of dicks.

Wow, some great stuff. I'm enjoying these. Its amazing to think that we just went through a full-nba season. Can you guys remember summer league? And the draft? Preseason? When we all migrated over here? That was before the start of this year! It was definitely one of the most anticipated years in a long time. Just flew by.

200% disagree. 54 wins with essentially 3 rookies (Oden, Rudy, Batum) is amazing! I forget the exact stat but this was one of if not the best season EVER by a team this young. Coaching matters.

Interesting, I didn't think I saw you much when the Blazers were kicking ass a month ago and winning 10 of our last 11 games, but you've posted like crazy once we lost. You only have 11 posts from 3/25/09 - 4/25/09 yet you have 20 posts since last night after we lost (and probably more by now)! hmm...

I thought that was interesting. I'm happy you belittle our team, coaches and GM though.

Hard to run when your two best ball handlers either won't or can't.

Roy won't, Blake can't. No one else on the team who can handle the ball is worth one fuck.

And please save the "Give the Ball to Rudy" comments. He wasn't ready to do that this year, and may never be ready.

I give Roy a C- in the playoffs. In the 2 close losses he had numerous 4th quarter turnovers when he ignored open team mates and drove the lane 1 on 3 or 1 on 4. Too many bad decisions while trying to be da man. Also, while Nate was imploring him to run with the ball, he continuouosly walked the ball up and let Houston's defense get fully set. He's a great player, but his performance in the playoffs left a little to be desired when it counted most.

I'll grade everyone based on their role:

Roy: A He took over games and single handedly carried us to many victories. The only areas he has to improve on are defense and being a better distributer.

LA: B+ LaMarcus wasn't quite as consistent as Roy, he can be tenative, and settle for the jump shot. He's also an inconsistent rebounder...but overall, good season by LaMarcus.

Oden: C+ Not going to give Oden a curve. He was a good rebounder, but played good defense, but could not stay out of foul trouble. He also was painful to watch in the low-post.

Batum: D+ he played good for a rookie, but again, I"m not going to give him a curve. Face it, he was invisible 85% of the time. He didn't give the kind of production most "average/C" SFs do.

Blake: C- He hit his 3s and didn't make many mistakes, but I think he's holding our team back. He doesn't run the fast break, can't break down a defense and doesn't create for his team mates like a PG should. He also played poor defense.


Rudy: C- This guy has a lot of talent, and has a lot of potential, but this season, basically all he did is take 3 pointers, 40% 3pt shooters are fairly common in this day and age. He had some great moments, but most games, he was fairly passive, and he had some absolutely frigid months.

Joel: B- Great rebounder and team defender...but a liability on offense.

Frye: F--------------------------uck

Sergio: D Made a few nice passing plays here and there, but played poor defense, and was a sub par shooter.

Outhouse: C- Travis is horrible at times, as we all know, but he played enough good games that he deserves at least a C -

My only big disagreement with some posts would be that I would give Pryzbilla an A or
B in the playoffs; his defense on Yao was awesome in several games, the most important factor in those games as far as I am concerned.

post season: got blow out in the first game, team not ready, lost home court, never won in houston all season, and to top it all off...rolled over and died in the final game.

Totally exposed in the playoffs as someone you can not count one in the post season pure junk....cheap and tradable!

Roy: B+ reg B post season
kept us in games but didnt push the tempo agaisnt the one team we needed to....

LMA: B reg B- post
shot well during our two wins but got cut in half in the loses.

Joel: B and B-
scored more in the reg season than in the post but was guarding yao...

Batum: B and D
great for a young rook like him in the reg but was shellshocked in the post

Blake: B+ and C-
dropped off big time in the playoffs poor shooting

Rudy: B and C
dropped off big time miss shots he made in the reg but showed some d

Oden: C- and D+
progressing way to slow the blazers need to address this.....
