you're making a giant assumption; that being that the Vulcans think Cronin fucked up "too badly"

my assumption is that the Vulcans set the priorities and the #1 priority was to dramatically reduce current and future payroll. Cronin did that. He even secured a solid opportunity for another lottery pick, but the historical collapse of the Lakers and PG13's Covid + Kennard's injury helped the Pels negotiate to a bad outcome for Portland. I would not be surprised, at all, if the Vulcans were happy enough with Cronin's payroll savings that they forgave the rare confluence of events that jobbed the Blazers out of that draft pick

besides all that, even if the Clippers had won last night, with Portland's luck, the Pels would have jumped into the top-4 pushing Portland to #7. As it is, the Laker's pick will probably do that
So do they leave the interim tag on him, or publicly give him a vote of confidence by giving him the job?

I have no clue

while I think the Cronin trashing is over-the-top right now, I'd prefer a different GM and soon. I'm pretty worried about Cronin managing the draft pick and the off-season

In a very semantic post I'm about to make:

The players did play to win. They just weren't good enough, and that was set up by the ownership, who technically does not play.

Yeah Strenuus! Yeah semantics!
I agree. CJ Elleby played his heart out.
You see what I did there?

What does Cronin have to say now? He is a horrible GM and this years trade deadline fiasco will elicit laughter and head shakes and wtf was he thinking for years to come. He should fucking resign in monday. He has no business running a team.

Couldn’t agree more. Portland staged one of the more blatant and embarrassing tank jobs in NBA history, and losing this draft pick is the ironic price for that.
They didn't lose the draft pick, it just goes to '25. Plus they still have their pick which, who knows, could be awesome. Hey Congrats to CJ & the Pelicans. But they still have a who knows, with Zion ( He still looks huge) and may not want to re-sign there. And a fan base that doesn't care half the time.

Man ,I must be the most stubborn, ignorant, blind follower of the NBA/Blazers on this here forum.
In spite of everything, (they lost a draft pick) I am still so ecstatic that CJ, Norm, and covington are gone, and I am thrilled with Hart, Winslow, the potential of Louzada, and the elevation of Anfernee (don't call me 'Ant') Simons, that, well, I still love the trades!
Not "rose colored" at all, but an honest belief.
I guess this ol' blind guy sees something most of you don't, even though we had a monumental game thread last night, which does little more than prove this place prefers to participate in self created misery.
I'm sticking with my "addition by subtraction" theory, and the belief that roco does more harm than good and norm is a average player, CJ had to go.
Shouldn't be too hard to improve on that.
We shall see.

Did you love the Drexler, Jermaine, and Sheed trades too?

Don't forget BG for Kemp.

Every basketball player should take cocaine! I can't believe you think otherwise. It makes them play better! I hope he shares his habit with the rest of the team.

Go Blazers. Whoooooooooo!

The anatomy of a bad trade:

Cronin: We have a guy who can't get to his full potential because our previous GM decided to put 2 similar players together that can't be all they can be when they are on the floor together. When this guy gets his own team, he will likely be even better and play at or near an all-star level.

Langdon: Perfect, that sound like just what we want. We have a number of young players on cheap contracts, but we will only give you the absolute worst out of all of them, and will make sure there is no size involved. I would imagine you also want a 1st round pick with that.

Cronin: That sounds perfect. But I'd like it if this trade works out for you and makes you better, that we get less and less in return. Please make sure that if you get better, we get screwed, and throw on some contingency protection for yourself as well for both now and in the future. Make sure not to include other assets that would replace that pick this year if it doesn't convey, and instead, give us a crappy pick way down the road when Dame will be turning 35.

Langdon: Okay, if you insist.

:banghead2: Savage, but fair!

BG was to leave as a free agent I thought, so we did a sign and trade?

Just a little bump.

Could we steal Mike Dunleavy Jr away from the GSW? He’s a assistant general manager for them now.

Stahhhpppp. You have no right to criticize the trade because you don't know all the conversations had and it was obviously the best deal we could have had because I just know.

Stop thinking we could have gotten a star player.

Sheesh.

Exactly. Why think that we can trade an allstar level player and get a star player in return? How ridiculous!

It's a hiccup for sure, but it ain't the end. Blazers still have a ton of flexibility, cap space, and their lottery pick. Teams will be looking to unload high salary talent to retool as well. John Collins could be on the move. Detroit needs to move Grant to truly start their youth movement. I'm not bailing the Pistons out by giving up too much. I like Grant as a role player, but he's not the be all , end all. The Blazers don't need to sell out to get him. If the Blazers are going to pay high for someone, it's Collins, not Grant. For what ever reason, Young fell in love with big lumox , Clint Can't Playa. Collins needs a change of scenery, and Hawks management seems willing to listen.
How much cap space do you think we have? It's probably not as much as you think, and this free agent class sucks, and we never land good free agents anyway. Plus we don't have many tradeable contracts either.

There are plenty that would take the job. The point is the team needs someone with experience and/or is someone that is actually being groomed to be a lead GM. Figuring out what is best move(s) for the team should not be decided by a greenhorn. Plenty of legit assistance that would love to take the job because it’s still a dream job. You can tell Cronin doesn’t have “it”.

I don't know why everyone doesn't see this. He had a vision that depended on players he should have known would impact their new team in a big way not impacting that team and while he almost pulled it off, he didn't. On top of that, I don't know how well that vision would have actually worked out. The guy completely failed as an interim GM on the roster building side of things and if that doesn't matter to our ownership and only the salary cutting side of things does fuck them.

As far as your above post about cap space, we don't have any cap space if we re-sign Ant and Nurk and opt in on Hart. We will have room to use the full MLE but that will completely take the 21M TPE out of play. So that's where we're at as far as results from the trades in February and the subsequent tank. I don't even think getting the first pick salvages this because there is no clear number one in this draft and definitely not a sure fire all nba caliber player even though there will likely be an all nba player or two in this draft.

There's just no reason for Cronin to have the interim tag taken off of him, they should announce ASAP that they are continuing with the interview process and want to have the results and permanent GM in place before the Draft Lottery on May 17th. Fingers crossed.

I have a sulking pit in my stomach thinking of the horrendous return got in those trades.. it gets even worse thinking Cronin might actually Be the permanent gm. His performance as gm has been a disgrace. We are the laughing stalk of the league. Might be many years before we pull our self out of this. There is no way we build a contender with dame now with how little assets we got back in our fire sale.

Shit, I just wasn't on the same track as all of you guys but we just don't have the assets to build a contender around Dame, we don't have them. We only have the ability unless whoever we draft is very quickly a lot better than Dame, to get back to where we were as a team that struggles to make the second round and no further. I mean things outside of my purview could be in play or happen out of the blue but as far as I can see, there just aren't ways without getting really lucky and that even means getting lucky on top of lucky in the case of our draft pick because we would have to get lucky and move up in the draft and get lucky and that player becomes a superstar a lot faster than most forecast any of them will. I don't know why at this point Dame would be cool with depending on luck.

We just need a new GM that makes some very shrewd decisions because the clever, nice guy moves that Olshey and now his cronies continue to try and pull off are bullshit and end up with us stuck at the bottom of the playoffs... which yes if we're looking at one season is more fun than what we just did but it just can't be the goal.

I really think with what happened yesterday that any GM candidate that they've been interviewing whose vision was to trade Dame for the best return of young assets possible to go with Ant, our pick, Nas and our other young prospects sure has to be a lot more appealing to Vulcan now that we don't have the means to add our pick and Grant... that ship has sailed. I even think that GM candidate could sell Vulcan on trading Dame lowering our payroll but us still having the same chances to make the playoffs and same slim chances to advance starting next season.

I really really wanted to win at least one championship with Dame and I really wanted him to only ever play for our team but at this point that doesn't really match up with what his stated goals are and what our teams goals should be.

Griffin: All right. Where is the Draft pick? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right... and who is dead.

Cronin: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the pock into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the pick into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

Griffin: You've made your decision then?

Cronin: Not remotely. Because pick contingencies come from out of your dark closet, as everyone knows, and your closet is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.

Griffin: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

Cronin: Wait till I get going! Now, where was I?

Griffin: Australia.

Cronin: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the contingencies protections, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

Griffin: You're just stalling now.

Cronin: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you? You've beaten my Nurkic, which means you're exceptionally strong, so you could've put the poison in your own goblet, trusting on your strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But, you've also bested my Fernandez in the past, which means you must have studied, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would have put the poison as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

I would think Hart, Winslow, Dame are very tradable contracts. Can we do sign and trades with Nurk and/or Simons?
