How good do you think Terry Stotts is a s a coach?

Man we are almost out of the top6. I'm like 90% sure Dallas will get that spot. And now i can imagine us going against Steph in play in and he goes for 50.

Paul was different because he had a personal interest in the sport and sports in general. The single most important thing at Vulcan is money and getting asses in seats. Would a ring increase PROFITS? probably not. Sure if the team is a complete shit show fans may not attend games etc, but they have a winning record and a good chance to make the post season.

I have to disagree with you even though you are obviously being hyperbolic on purpose. I fucking guarantee that Chris McGowan knows this team and what goes on with it far better than any of us do. That being said, he may not care about winning big. I very seriously doubt that day to day profits are anywhere close to as important as franchise valuation is. I know that teams are worth more when they are better known and followed more closely outside of their markets though. I also know that when a team is actually contending, that is when the team becomes relevant. If this team was where it was in mid 90' to mid 92' then I also guarantee it we would be worth more. We'd have more games on national TV, we'd have bigger sponsors with bigger dollars pursuing us which is a day to day profit scenario but more importantly the franchise would likely be worth half a billion more than it right now as it toils in obscurity.

If Vulcan doesn't see a path to relevance then I can see them not giving a damn but if they do then it's worth a whole helluva lot of money.

Good points..The teams share revenue too, so as long as they are meeting other objective and subjective performance criteria, and at the very least are in the playoffs (which keeps the interest level up) sets the stage for status quo.

The Blazers are a billion dollar business operation; millions coming in one door and going out another. And Paul Allen's estate was much more complicated than just the Blazer operation. I have no clue how everything is structured in an estate like that...in a financial empire like that. But it's sure to be complex and tax effects and shelters are going to blur lines and offer advantages all over the ledgers. I know in real estate when an owner dies and the asset is passed to an heir, a new basis is created for depreciation and other tax impacts.

it could be that right now the Blazers are a giant tax shelter for the estate and Jody Allen. I'm pretty sure there's a new basis on the Rose Garden and the practice facility and any attached structures and other facilities. There may even be some sort of stepped up basis on the franchise as well. I'd imagine so but I'm not sure.

so, there could be plenty of motivation not to rock boats and just collect revenue and tax advantages. At the same time, thru depreciation, the basis drops and the longer the asset is held the lower the basis. meaning higher taxes when it's eventually sold, if it is. So there mat be plenty of reason for JA & the Vulcans to sell sooner rather than later

What was really telling about that interview was Terry answered the question like those former/retired coaches who broadcast say what they would have done in that situation ... "I would have Dame make the free throws" instead of "Our strategy was X ..."

I think Terry sees the writing on the wall. The team does as well. Just get it over with. It's one less distraction.

I guess that explains why he didn't put Kanter in there at the end to rebound a miss; he just didn't have a plan.

Wow. Is there any question he's lost the team? It's only a matter of time at this point.
 
Hopefully the Blazers identify better GM and coaching options and get rid of both Olshey and Stotts. Olshey's put together a mediocre roster (when you consider both talent and fit) and Stotts hasn't really done anything to elevate what he's been given.
 
I’ve always really liked Thibodeau. He’s got a young and not very talented Knicks team 7 games above .500

Too bad we couldn’t of canned Stotts earlier and got him. No frills type guy. Took a young Derrick Rose led Bulls team to the Eastern Conference finals.

Sometimes I guess you snooze you lose.

He also failed miserably with Minnesota. Even their defense didn't improve under him. So it's unclear which Thibodeau we'd have gotten.

they've also won one playoff game in one playoff series over the last 16 seasons, and in that time, they've had 12 different head coaches including Rick Adelman who compiled a 97-131 record there. So maybe it was a Wolves problem instead of a Thibs problem

The whole point of a new coach is to change the "team problem." Also, my point wasn't that he didn't win a title for them, but that they didn't improve, even on defense.

Money. And he won’t have trouble getting another job, at all. If you are a GM and your team goes to the playoffs every year, you get another job.

he took over a 29 win team and in the 2nd season took them to 47 wins and the only playoff appearance in 16 seasons. That kind of looks like some improvement to me. As for the defense, Jimmy Butler got to the point of refusing to play for the Wolves because he felt too many teammates didn't give a shit about competing

'look', I'm not saying Thibs would solve Portland's problems. I just think he accomplished more in Minny than you describe. And yeah, the defense didn't improve. Just like it hasn't improved in Portland by bringing in RoCo, Jones, and Powell and getting Nurk back

I am unsure on Olshey. I would love to see a different coach with this roster. I see a lot of talent. Is it perfect? hell no. No roster is. But it has enough talent that when healthy can be a very good team.
