Intense, fast-paced drill on zone d/closeout going on. Fun to watch. Martell swishes three at shot clock buzzer. Rare offensive score.

Also, OSU coach Craig Robinson and beavers alum Gary Payton in attendance. Not sure why.

Paul Allen in the house.

First Blazers practice. Just let us in. First impression. Andre Miller's hair ... Wow. Corn ... Puffs? Balls? Rolls? Can't describe it.

Jerryd Bayless soaking up some post-practice words of wisdom from Gary Payton. Oh boy, here we go.

any mention of conditioning tests? I know Nate said he was probably going to cancel them.

Not a lot out there right now. I imagine most of the media is still working on their stories. Twitter is the best place to get updates right now.

More from Freeman:

Paul Allen on contract negotiations with LA: "We have made some progress there. So, yeah, I am optimistic."

This should make a lot of people happy as well.

Gary Payton saying he sees a lot of game and confidence in Jerryd Bayless.

Too bad it's going to mean fuck all for him on this team. KP loves him some "Blakey" :sigh:

Seriously? Did you watch any summer league? Bayless has a lot of work to do. Love his competitiveness and athleticism, but he is not in the same stratosphere as "Blakey" or Miller when it comes to running a team.

And while you're on the KP topic, keep in mind KP moved up in the draft to get Bayless.

Don't kid yourself. KP moved up in the draft to get Augustin

Apparently Gary Payton is hanging out. Says encouraging things about Bayless. Bayless has been working on the Payton scowl, that's for sure.

Augustin was gone long before the trade was announced. If KP hadn't wanted Bayless, he could have stuck with Rush.

Yeah I watched all of summer league (all that were televised anyway). I don't think Bayless is ready yet, but I think he's got a future in the league ... I just don't think it's going to happen here in Portland.

There has to be a team rule against something like that, doesn't there?

I think it's a violation of the "conduct detrimental to the league" clause of the standard NBA contract. I expect a hefty fine and possible suspension.

GP's being inducted into some Oregon hall of fame thing. He probably got an invite to attend practice.

No he couldn't have. The deal with Indiana was done earlier. KP wanted Augustin, and settled for Bayless.

It may have been agreed upon, but it was not finalized. It couldn't be finalized until July 8th because of the need for the increase in Diogu's contract value. If KP hadn't wanted Bayless, he could have backed out.

That would have been incredibly short-sighted on KP's part; GMs rely on relationships they build with other GMs to get their deals done and if you develop a habit of somebody who will back out of a verbal commitment you run the risk of gaining the reputation of a bad trading partner ... either way KP probably had it set up to trigger if any one of several point/combo guards were available. Otherwise why would KP have called the Bayless trade not neccessarily plan 1 but plan 1B at the time?

Regardless, having met KP and listened to him talk about Bayless, I can tell you KP loves him some Bayless. If anyone has a preference, it's Coach Nate, and rightfully so. Blake is safe and efficient. Bayless isn't ready yet. Considering the two guards ahead of Bayless though, and where they are in their careers, I wouldn't necessarily conclude Bayless will have to go to another team to get a chance. Patience young grasshopper. I wonder what GP said to him?

Do you seriously believe that if KP had wanted Augustin and only Augustin that he wouldn't have made the agreement contingent on his target's availability? Isn't that almost exactly the same situation as Minnesota-Houston in '06--they had a deal in place contingent on Foye falling to #8, and when we took him at 7, the deal fell through. If the precepts you're supposing were universal, Brandon Roy would be in Houston right now.
