Two centers I would focus on acquiring are Horvat or O'Reilly. The Blues window has closed. They're finished. O'Reilly has two years left on his contract. We need to get a faceoff stud. He's 29. I suspect something like Strome and Buchnevich with a Jones would get it done. He's worth it. He's a playoff stud also. Horvat is 25. A deal using Buchnevich and Chytil should be enough. However, I suspect they will want defenseman. They have nothing on the right side of their defense worth shit. Especially puck moving wise. Because dumb fuck Gorton gave Trouba a NMC and NTC like he seems to do with every player, we seem to have a log jam on the right side. Is Horvat worth giving up Lundkvist in a deal with Chytil? I don't know. I mean, you have Fox, Trouba and Schneider that seems to be the group going forward. It's hard to win playoff games with really young players. Especially on defense. Either deal has to be contingent on an extension. Horvat has 2 years left on his deal as well. Neither player gets a NMC or NTC.

By rule, you can only sign a contract extension in the final year of your current deal.
 
Yeah, i didn't really expect them to do anything at the DL except ride it out and if they happened to sneak in great, if not no biggie. Selling off Lemieux who had no role going forward was saying we're getting more assets and if we lose some toughness for the rest of season it's not a huge deal. Backfired a little but i had no problem with it as this is still a transition year.
 
The overall picture to me, and why I am really annoyed by untrustworthy Dolan, is this summer was always the target I believe. This is when it would all come together with no more terrible contracts and loads of dead cap money. And Dolan pulls the plug on Gorton and JD right on the goal line of them making their big final moves. That's what really pisses me off. That and the JD thing, as a franchise icon this never should have happened.
 
James Dolan essentially screamed to the hockey world that the rebuild is over. In his only interview since dismissing John Davidson and Jeff Gorton, he basically said he doesn’t like his hockey team. While he praised their work for amassing all this young talent, he claimed something was missing. Usually with Dolan that means more marquee names and bringing in those with proven track records. Patience may not be his biggest strong suit.

So now the New York Rangers appear to be back to heading to their old ways. It’s time to go shopping and get some big toys on Broadway again.

This is the one trade rumor in the NHL that will not die down or go away. Jack Eichel and the Rangers almost feels like preordained destiny. Even Johnny Gaudreau and the Flyers settled down after awhile.

If you try to surmise everything that James Dolan said in the wake of the dismissals, his patience had run out and he wants a winner now. When the news broke, I had a feeling one of the reasons why a change was made had to do with the failure to land Jack Eichel before the season. Another is brewing that the Blueshirts failed to land a player with term at the deadline. Whatever the cause, it’s all in for Eichel this summer.

Remember, Elliotte Friedman noted that the Rangers had a “reasonable offer” that obviously wasn’t good enough. That was probably a major factor in Dolan’s decisioning. Now those Jack Eichel talks are back with Friedman noting that the plan even before the change was to make another pitch. With Chris Drury at the helm, it sounds like it will be more aggressive.

“They were in on Eichel before this,” Friedman began. “It’s not like they were afraid to go after Eichel, they made the Sabres an offer on Eichel in the offseason. It’s one that at least made the Sabres think before deciding they weren’t ready to make the move yet. I don’t think Chris Drury will be any more or less inclined to make a move for Eichel as the organization is already prepared to do that.”
 
He's like the kid at Xmas who can't even wait till sunrise and has to open presents at 5 a.m.
 
I have felt it for a long while, Eichel is going to be a Ranger, and I feel it even more now. Only way I don't see it happening is if the Sabres stubbornly decide to hold onto him, or if the Sabres ask the Rangers for much more than any other team.

If they are fair and looking for a very good package highlighted by Strome, or Chytil, or Buch, and a dman like Jones or maybe even Lundkvist, and some picks (including their 3rd rounder back), Eichel will be a Ranger.
 
Gorton didn't do anything at the deadline because he turned into an incompetent GM. Bennett was there for the taking. He's been there for 2 years and Gorton did jack shit to acquire him. He easily had enough to get that guy. Jenner on Columbus is another plus faceoff, tough role player. The Jackets suck and are totally void of talent. Where was Gorton going out and getting a guy like that when that team has no scoring all over their roster and most of their defenseman suck.

I have made it clear that I believe the Rangers need to do far more than improve on the margins. I believe they need to hunt for big game to change the dynamic of their top six, and yes, of course if there is any way to pry Matthew Tkachuk out of Calgary that should become Drury’s singular obsession. There is nobody, but nobody, who would be a better fit.

Of course the bounty sent the other way would be massive. The Rangers have four players with no-move clauses in Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba, none of whom would suit the Flames, anyway.

I’d wall off Igor Shesterkin, Adam Fox and Alexis Lafreniere as untouchable, I’d designate Ryan Lindgren nearly untouchable and go from there.

Does that mean I’m in a hurry to move Kaapo Kakko? No. Or K’Andre Miller? Certainly not. But as I have said before, the Rangers are going to have to trade someone they don’t want to sacrifice in order to get a transformational top-six player.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don’t envision a package consisting of a permutation of Filip Chytil, Pavel Buchnevich, Vitali Kravtsov, Zac Jones, Nils Lundkvist and future first-rounders getting it done.

Do you think Neil Smith wanted to trade Tony Amonte?
 
I would look at the Calgary C's Monahan and Lindholm if I could not get Eichel. You have to think the Flames are open for business after missing the playoffs in a weak division.

I also think they could use some goalie support, so maybe Georgiev could interest them in a package with Buch, a dman, and a pick for one of their C's.

Georgiev, Buch, Jones, 3rd or 4th FOR Monahan or Lindholm

Watch the Flames, they could be a great match.

For Tkachuk no. For one of their C's, I think yes it would be. Tkachuk is a stud, and adds the kind of physical presence we need, but I highly doubt he's available, and we need a C, not a winger.
 
The New York Rangers are in the market for another top center. One name that should be on their shopping list is Sean Monahan with the Calgary Flames. He hasn’t been officially put on the market, but there is a chance they will at least listen to offers this summer.

Here are Sean Monahan’s vital statistics that everyone should know:
  • Age – 26
  • Pos – C
  • H/W – 6’2″, 200 lbs
  • Shoots – Left
Now let’s dive into the numbers that count. He has two years remaining on a deal that has a $6.375 AAV and is coming off a down season. Some believe that it would lower the cost of acquisition, but I doubt it. However, he had hip surgery and is expected to be ready for next season. That could be a factor to drive the cost down, not one bad season.

For his career, Monahan has 439 points in 591 games. That is a points per game average of .74 since he broke into the NHL at 19 and played 75 games. Back in 2018-19, Monahan scored 82 points in 78 games. He’s potted 30 goals three times in his 8 years in the league as well. All very solid 2C numbers for sure, maybe even 1A.

I know what you are thinking. Can he win face-offs? The answer is yes. While he’s not a specialist, he has a career average in the dots of 50.2 and can hold his own. Monahan is also very good defensively, and does not take bad penalties. Like I said, read the reviews and make sure to hit Add to Cart.

So what would it take to acquire Monahan should he become an available item? That’s a good question and one that isn’t easily answered. What are the Flames in need of? Cap space for one. Heading into next season Calgary has about $14 million to play with and only have 13 players under contract.

Could the Rangers acquire a player like Monahan using cost controlled assets like center/winger Filip Chytil and defenseman Zac Jones? That may not be enough, but it could be a solid starting point. Remember, Calgary has a highly touted prospect in Connor Zary that could debut next season too. They have their own lost cost options coming in, but does it make sense to play Zary on the 4th line?

Right now the main objective of this article is to call attention to whom should be on Chris Drury’s trade shopping list for centers. If Monahan becomes officially available, the ask from GM Brad Reliving will be made clearer.
 
For Monahan I'd think you'd have to give up a 1st in any package. On a team like the Rangers he'd be good for at least 65 points a year. Probably something like Chytil, 1st, Lundkvist with the Flames maybe sending back a 4th/5th. You won't get him for Chytil, Jones and a throw-in. He's a former #6 overall who's not yet 27. He and Zibanejad would make a really good 1/2. I'd rather have Barkov or Eichel if his health clears but those guys are obv. 3/4m more.
 
Chuck, did you write that or is that a copy/paste from somewhere? I ask because I like Monahan a lot, have posted about him before, but whoever wrote that he "is very good defensively" needs to be banned from writing on hockey ever again. He's at best a slight upgrade on Strome in that aspect, and even that might be generous. You take him because his offensive ceiling is higher than Strome at 2C and he leaves you enough cap to also get a good FA bottom 6 C like Cizikas or Goodrow to eat some of those defensive minutes and touch matchups.
 
That is a copy and paste. He is also much better at faceoffs than Strome, has a higher offensive ceiling, and is a more imposing player. He's better than Strome for sure I think, but is more of a legit # 2 C to pair with Zib. But as you call out 223, his cap number leaves you with the ability to add a bottom 6 C to play D, kill penalties, and also win faceoffs with Monahan. And he won't cost you as much, even if you add a 1st or 2nd to a package of Jones, Chytil and maybe one other middle piece.

LOL. Again, I wouldn't offer Lundkvist for him straight up. I doubt the Rangers have any interest in Monahan. He's not what this team needs. They need a top faceoff guy who can play on the top 2 lines. Monahan isn't that.
 
Monahan absolutely is that. He had a down season this year, was still at 49% on FO's, but the past 4 seasons prior to this no camp, long pauses, up and down season his stats are as follows:

48 points, 22 goals 52.6% on FO's in 70 games
82 points, 34 goals 51.1% on FO's in 78 games
64 points, 31 goals 50.4% on FO's in 74 games
58 points, 27 goals 51.5% on FO's in 82 games

Over 50% on FO's every year, over 51% 3 of 4 years, at least 22 goals every season, at least 58 points 3 of 4 seasons. He is a legit # 2 C and clearly is good on FO's.

That doesn't mean he is the target, or the Rangers have to get him, but he is a good player, a # 2 C, who wins FO's and scores goals. Plus he adds size at 6'2" 200 lbs.

Meanwhile Strome has never scored more than 18 goals, and one time had more than 50 points. His 3 seasons with the Rangers his FO %'s are 43.2%, 47.5%, and 47.2%.

So you can not have Monahan at the top of your list, but you are not allowed to make up your own facts about his game. He scores goals, and is good on FO's. He is also 2 years younger than Strome, and has an extra year left on his contract with a 6.375 cap hit.

Not a perfect player, not a stud # 1 C, but a very good player with upside, who would be a good add if we cannot get a stud C.

For a non-top 3 1st, Chytil and Lundkvist i would be all over that if i were Drury. He's basically a top 5 pick entering his prime and averaging 50% on FO, who likely averages 65 pts. That would be one of the top 5 C combos in the league. And the size thing which is big and lacking on the team. I don't think Calgary is moving him.
 
50% FO on the Rangers is like 63% on other teams. :blink: Maybe the Flames would move him, especially if you enticed them enough. I don't see Chytil breaking 60pts much in his career and Lundkvist, as nice a prospect as he is, may not work with Schneider/Robertson on the way. Use him to minimize the package and get what you want, whoever that is. Monahans next controct probably won't be much over 7m anyway. Calgary could get their Adam Fox type back that they lost to Carolina.
 
I think the Flames will be open for some business. They have kind of plateaued the past couple of years, and I think they'll look to mix up the chemistry. Plus they have cap concerns, so getting young controlled players like Chytil and Lundkvist or Jones is beneficial for them.

At days end no one really knows who specifically is available and for what, but the Flames would be a target team if I were Drury. We have good matches I think. Chytil, Jones, good pick, mid-level piece could be a solid package for them.
 
Monahan wouldn't win 45% of his draws in the east. It's by far the best faceoff division. You need to be winning 53 to 60% of your draws to be 50% in the east. You overrate Monahan so badly it's mind boggling. The only big season he ever had was when Gaudreau went off one year. Other than that, he's nothing special. O'Reilly, Horvat and Larkin are much better options if you are considering giving up a prospect like Lundkvist.
 
58 point season, 64 point season (in addition to his 82 point season), over 50% on FO's pretty much every year. But he only had one good year, and won't win 45% of his FO's in the East.

More of the I say it so it's true mentality. Good times...
 
There was a time I wanted Monahan here. After watching him the last 2 seasons. No thanks.

If the idea is to get tougher to play against and to add more jam to compliment the skill guys, which has been a running theme in everything we have heard this offseason, then Monahan is probably the wrong guy. It might work if we then upgraded 3C with that type of player, but we'd be better served looking for a more complete player to add to the top 6. This team - as it is constructed - needs more out of a 2C than solid point totals and above average FO numbers.

If CGY is our dance partner, Lindholm is the much better 2 way player, good on faceoffs, doesnt cost you that much on offense at all, and has a much better contract while at the same age.
 
My opinion is I target a stud C first. Aim for a real difference maker. If we cannot get that guy I think Monahan falls into a category with a handful of other C's that are solid # 2 type C's. Won't cost you as much in terms of assets or cap space. If you get a guy from this group you add a PK, FO, defensive C to anchor the 3rd or 4th line.

That's how I see it.

I would be fine with either one, Lindholm or Monahan. Both solid on FO's, Monahan a bit more offensive upside, Lindholm a more well rounded player. Again, can't go wrong either way IMO if we dropped down to that next level.
 
Lindholm is not good enough. If I'm giving up a Fox version 2 in Lundkvist, I want a player who can win 53%+ in the faceoff dot in the east and is clutch. Blues are getting pimped slapped by the Av's. If they make the finals I would change my opinion nobody can beat the Lightning. They might be able to do it. Only team I see that could. O'Reilly could be one of the final pieces to getting us to the finals. Add O'Reilly for the first line, Jenner for the second line. Toughness, faceoff's and leadership. Go get Lucic half retained to ride shotgun for the team.
 
I think Barkov is good as gone from Sunrise after next year. Their d-corps is going to stink once Yandle/Stralman are gone.
