For anyone thinking Israel is showing restraint and only targeting Hamas

The Israeli military said mortar shells had been fired from near the school, and that soldiers fired back.

Okay, that's from AP. It sounds like the usual excuses given. But you stated it as a known proven fact. Also, Israel's return fire sounds haphazard. "Near" the school doesn't justify blowing up the school and killing 16.

troll much? You are smart enough to realize that Hamas is using the deaths of innocent people as a pr tactic. They fire from UN schools where they are storing arms. They are very aware that Israel will return fire, and Hamas counts on a body count to make Israel look like the bad guy.

Want an end to violence? Stop tunneling into Israel, stop lobbing rockets, stop denying Israel the right to exist.

Also, you said the school had stored arms, as if it was a known verified fact. Where does the article even make the accusation, much less offer evidence or proof.

if I must look up a three day old story for you I would, but you have a tendency to argue regardless..seriously, I do not make shit up. There was a story reported on NPR that the Israelis has confiscated arms at several UN buildings. Google it yourself.

The UN even admitted it. Arguing with that poster isn't worth the effort. It's why I've ignored him.

GAZA CITY — The United Nations has acknowledged that its facilities in the Gaza Strip were storing Palestinian missiles and rockets.
The UN Relief and Works Agency has reported at least two incidents in which its schools were used for the storage of rockets amid the war with Israel. In both cases, the UN refused to confiscate the rockets and instead asked Hamas to retrieve the weapons.

“UNRWA strongly and unequivocally condemns the group or groups responsible for this flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law,” UNRWA said.
On July 22, the UN said it found rockets concealed in one of its vacant schools in the Gaza Strip. The UN did not say how many rockets were found or what was done with them.

“Today, in the course of the regular inspection of its premises, UNRWA discovered rockets hidden in a vacant school in the Gaza Strip,” the agency said. “As soon as the rockets were discovered, UNRWA staff were withdrawn from the premises, and so we are unable to confirm the precise number of rockets.”

Western diplomats, however, said the UN returned as many as 20 rockets to Hamas. Canada has called for an investigation of the UN action.

“I was appalled to hear reports, one as recent as today, of stockpiles of rockets in a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Gaza,” Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said. “Even more alarming were reports that in the first case, officials with the United Nations returned these weapons to Hamas, a listed terrorist organization, once Israeli officials discovered their location.”

The UN statement supported assertions by the Israeli military that Hamas and its Palestinian militia allies were using schools and mosques for rocket storage and attacks. In a report in mid-July, the UN said the Israeli military has been providing warning before attacks on civilian facilities
believed to contain weapons.

“Hamas has dug terrorist tunnels under hospitals, mosques, schools, homes, to penetrate our territory, to kidnap and kill Israelis,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on July 22.

The latest rockets were found between two other UN schools that sheltered 1,500 Palestinians who fled their homes during the current war.

The UN said the concealment of rockets marked a “flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law.”

“The agency immediately informed the relevant parties and is pursuing all possible measures for the removal of the objects in order to preserve the safety and security of the school,” the UN said. “UNRWA will launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Okay, I verified that story by looking for a more reliable site and found it. So I concede that at 2 vacant schools (not the 2 bombed), an unknown number of rockets were stored.

Still, if I'm Israel and a couple of rounds are fired from "near a school," I'll go in there on the ground without haphazardly bombing the school, knowing how many innocents are in there.

And jlprk hits the canvas. It's not looking too good for him, folks.

and again the UN contradicts itself, check further and you will discover that these "vacant" schools are being used to house those seeking protection. These are the very same that Hamas uses to launch rockets with the expectation of fire being returned, and the expectation of civilian casualties.

And to further address your argument that Israel is loosing public opinion, well that is entirely the point. Hamas can only win in the court of public opinion, they could never hope to fight a protracted ground war. So to understand each other, we are in agreement that these casualties are a Public relations move?

Yesterday Israel had killed 850 civilians. Today there have been dozens added. I don't know how you can blame "public relations." Even if Hamas tricked Israel into all 900 killings, that doesn't make Israel look very bright.

I do not blame public relations, merely understand why Hamas is doing what it is doing, as I suspect you do as well. No, it does not make Israel look bright as you say, but this is not a popularity contest, this is about securing its national security, another concept that many in this country have no concept of.

Man up and tell us what you want Israel to do.

Next time there's a war in Europe like Bosnia (and a war can be easily created for this purpose), grab a piece of land (with UN, superpower, and international law backing) for your new homeland. You are welcome in Europe, but not in Muslim regions, where you will never have peace.

you know, the thing I find consistent with your post is that anywhere there are Muslims, there is no peace

Accept it and move on. To a Christian region, where they turn the other cheek and let you take over. If the Arabs haven't given in to Israel after 70 years of war and being tortured, they never will. It'll be the same 70 years from now.

Greece has problems. It would be easy to move Jews into one side for a generation, then have poverty provoke a civil war, and when the new borders are drawn, you have an Israel-like climate on a seacoast for your new homeland.

Better yet, the island of Cyprus. Defensible borders. Current population 1 million. Make friends with them and include them in the power structure, along with the 6 million former Israelis.

Naw! It seems right to me for the Jews to be in the City of David and Salomon, in the land known as Israel and Judah.

God gave the Jews their land and they are back to take it. God also told them they are able to steal water, restrict the flow of food and vital medications into the territory to bleed out the Palestinian population. Don't believe me? It says so in their book!

Hamas is the Great American Red Herring. And the Israeli one too. I thought Hamas kidnapped and killed three teenagers. Oh, not so? Well... let's change our reasoning behind the war.

So, in your plan do the Palestinians pay Israel for the trillions of dollars of infrastructure they will leave behind?

Go Blazers

The Palestinians had better hope it was Hamas that kidnapped those children. If they weren't, then the Palestinians are fucked.

Israel is the only side whose leadership cares about limiting children and civilian casualties. To the Palestinians, those are benefits because the only war they're fighting is one of public opinion. If they can ramp up bloody and dead innocents, to them it's a win.

I don't know what to make out of this situation, but innocent civilians dying (on either side) is very sad to me. i don't know how anyone can think these civilians deserve to die.

Funny, the Palestinians in the West Bank don't lob rockets, what do they get for their good behavior? More Jewish settlements.

Agreed. Of course, the difference is that Israel is trying to protect civilians while Hamas is trying to put them in harm's way for propaganda.

The mistake is applying moral equivalence to this conflict.
