Former Wizards coach Scott Brooks is finalizing a deal with Portland to become Chauncey Billups’ top

But you were begging for Mike Brown, who in the one year he didn’t have a generational talent (Kobe/Lebron) won 30 games? Brooks took the bum wizards to the playoffs three times and even past the first round.
He's been an assistant coach under Steve Kerr, has always coached defense well, and told Dame they need to utilize him off the ball more.

That checks the boxes for what I'd be looking for.

Bones please take a chill man -- I mean if Brooks was the hire to be the HC then be annoyed but you kind of act like Brooks is a god awful hire when i believe he has a track record for being a good assistant HC before he got to become a HC. I will say i hope Billups makes at least one chance on a coach aka hire a Rip Hamilton etc maybe someone who has not been a coach at all for his staff but is known for a great basketball mind.

Chill? I'm pretty chill. I just think Brooks has been pretty bad recently and I'm not exactly thrilled about the hire. Is that opinion too worked up? I literally just said he might be good as an assistant. Is that not enough?

Our last lead assistant was Nate Tibbets.
Scott brooks is exponentially better. No room to complain.

Brooks reminds me of Stotts, in that his best attribute was his ability to connect with the players.

We still need someone who a track record on defense.

Brooks has been a shit head coach for years. Nothing to be thrilled about.
to be fair, scott brooks tenure with the wizards was determined by john wall achilles injury he suffered in the 17/18 season and the franchise never recovered from it (neither did john wall)

however, in the 16/17 season (his first with the team), he almost lead the team to the eastern conference finals (they lost game 7 to the celtics)

last season wizards team with beal & westbrook (and no other help) was terrible for the majority of the season, so to get in the playoffs was quite something

as far as his okc tenure goes, he lead the team to the nba finals where they lost to the heat (as expected) and they lost two times in the western conference finals (against the spurs and mavs, both of which won the chip)

and even if he was a bad head coach (which im not sure he is), that has nothing to do with him being an assistant coach (entirely different job) and hes experienced and not only that, hes dealt with guys like durant, westbrook, beal & wall

Chauncey needs a lead assistant who understands clock management and when to take timeouts...etc...rookie coaches all need a boost with that......Brooks is a good hire....as far as the Wizards....when is the last time that franchise boosted any coaches resume?

Steve Clifford is now available. But oops…..his win/loss record as a head coach in Orlando sucks (like pretty much every other head coach Orlando has had since the Shaq salad days). I guess that disqualifies him as an assistant coach…..despite his proclivity for defensive accountability…..and despite the lack of talent given to him over his tenure….

Says who?

Brooks has also been an assistant coach. SEATTLe, Kings & Nuggets
He was a scrappy player.

Clearly that one season in Seattle had an impact on Jody Allen and Bert Kolde.

Says the same kind of amateur basketball “expert” identical to every other “expert” who posts on this site. What exactly makes the musings of one fan more relevant than the musings of another fan?? You think your opinions don’t elicit eye rolls sometimes. Unless you’re working in the Blazers’s personnel department, you’re just another homer like the rest of us……sorry for offering an opinion in the presence of great minds……

Have no idea who you're talking about. I don't see anyone here saying their opinions are more valid than another. People are just sharing their thoughts on the hire.

Sorry, you’re only allowed an opinion if you work in the personnel department.

Do you read what you post? You asked “says who” when I posted an opinion. Says me…….no different than any other opinion on this site. If you want to prove me wrong, fine. Then do the homework. Otherwise, it’s all it ever was, an opinion. But I took your post as snark….and responded in the same manner. Perhaps we both need to work on our communications skills……

Your original post that you quoted me on had a sarcastic response, with a point that I didn't even make. So I responded sarcastically as well. Maybe I misread your tone, but I legitimately have no idea why you replied to my post and mentioned Clifford as if I wouldn't support him because of his mediocre coaching record. Perhaps you meant to respond to someone else.

Brooks to Portland, Beale likes Dame, they are playing together on the Olympic team....
= Beal to Portland, right?
Did anyone read the story about someone’s mom running into Beal in Vegas and asking him to join Dame? Hilarious. Pipe dream but I hope Neil at least explores that avenue.

Dude, you said we needed someone with a track record on defense. I offered Clifford as an available option and said why. Where you got any kind of sarcasm whatsoever out of that response is far beyond me. You can disagree all you want. You can challenge me all you want. That is why this forum exists. If you disagree with my opinion on Clifford, please tell me why or just ignore me. But a “says who?” response goes nowhere but off the rails.

Edit. My “oops” comment was intended for Bones, in response to his take that Brooks isn’t a particularly attractive candidate for assistant because of his track record as a HC. My apologies if you thought that was directed at you.

All good. I kind of figured that’s who the response was meant for. As far as Clifford, I’m agree with you and am completely on board with bringing him in as an assistant.

I’m glad that it’s not My Cousin Vinny but we still need Hollins

Brooks has been a respected head coach in the NBA at Oklahoma City and Washington and won Coach of the Year honors in 2010, while with the Thunder. He twice coached in the NBA All-Star Game.

He is known as an outstanding communicator and has been popular with his players. Prior to being cut loose by Washington after last season, his two best players – Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook – endorsed bringing him back, but the team did not come to an agreement with Brooks.

Just want to point out to a few of you that the head coach picks his assistants, the GM doesn't. Now the GM can say no because of salary considerations but even a new HC like Billups wouldn't want the job if he can't pick the staff.

The guy I'm hoping we can get who has played on two different teams for Brooks is Jeff Green. I hope we can get him for the vet min. He'd be great off the bench.
