We went from Olshey the talking Carnie plugger to Joe, who comes across like Mr. Rogers, a very sweet nice fellow. Nothing wrong with that...
Olshey would be getting death threats right now if he said they went after players for their heart, not size.

(Not defending Olshey)

Joe looks like he really loves his job. I dig that. Hairdo always looked pissed off.

that's disappointing to hear.

i dunno man. if i was a STH and spending tens of thousands of dollars a year on this team, I'd want more info on the detailed vision of the franchise than basic platitudes like "we value heart." Or like why should i bother spending my hard earned cash for a team that wants to pinch pennies to get a profit-sharing payment instead of an extra 5 wins?

maybe it's just me. :dunno:
It's not that it's "just you", but look at the difficulty even hard core fans on a message board have at understanding the hard cap.
I wouldn't say they're catering to LOWEST common denominator. But that just doesn't seem to be the coverage most local media is going to give.

The problem is that whether it's slimy Neil or "awww shucks" Joe, we're not getting much substance from these press conferences.

I like Joe and Chauncey a lot. They are what this team needed and they're always in the room together. I get the sense that they are doing what they think is best for Chauncey's vision moving ahead and for the players. Fact is they value guys that returned and that tells me, they're going to help Watford, Brown and Walker guys who can give you length when you need it. Going to be a fun season. To any armchair GM out there complaining....maybe wait until you see what this team looks like before you second guess Joe. To the accountants out there....cap space doesn't win games....players do.

You're really pissing off Poker Pussy, and Laker Wes right now.

I'll tell you what I think about when they say heart wins.....Ben Wallace, Rip Hamilton, Sheed, Chauncey, Tayshaun Prince and Linsey Hunter......on of the smallest teams at the time that not only won a championship but dominated the east for several ECF appearances. They are the gold standard for defense on a string....Prince and Hamilton weren't strong bulky guys who physically dominated their opponents..they were quick with long arms and instincts. ...that's where I think we'll be this season...defense on a string.

We heard Cronin say numerous times this team needed to get bigger and more athletic in the front court and that the roster needed more balance. Now it's "we don't care about height, only heart" bs? That sounds like someone who failed to see his plan unfold properly.

Sounds like a used car salesmen.

Considering how shit the Blazers reporters are at the job, you’d think it would be easier to get a credential.

Like 90% of the time breaking news about the blazers is reported by someone other than a blazers journalist. Kinda crazy.
If I’m not mistaken the Blazers only employ one “reporter”. I’m not sure you now how the media works my guy.

I was talking about the people who supposedly cover the team. You know, like Fentress, Jaynes, etc.

I’m not sure you “know” how spelling words correctly works my guy.

So Casey I know works for the team but does Brooke sub contract to the team or is she employed like Casey is? I know neither of them will print any negative pieces about the team but....I'd have thought they both worked for the team

I thought Cronin was pretty straight forward with the fact that he's happy with how the offseason has gone in terms of talent collection, he would like to have more balance on the roster and he wants to see how these guys play together. Did people want him to say, "We are desperate for size and are really going to be at a disadvantage in negotiations when trying to acquire that size."?

I would've just asked something like...

Could you please touch a little bit on how you're going to be approaching the cap situation the rest of the year? Did you stretch Bledsoe's dead money? Are you trying to keep staying under the tax an option?

Q: "Did you stretch Bledsoe's dead money?"

A: we'll decide at the end of the season

Q: "Are you trying to keep staying under the tax an option?"

A: of course...we don't foreclose on an option until circumstances say otherwise

I also don't like to see new players like Grant and Payton have their introductions to the franchise mucked up with a bunch of doubt aimed at Joe for his offseason...this is not the interview for tough questions....those are for after a loss post game interview. This was about the guys who are buying into the team....not the reporters who want to bitch about the guys we brought in....Drew doesn't need to hear Quick say he's not a big enough center....he needs to be asked questions that are about him and his feelings about being here...not some media hack throwing doubt at his size.
The last thing I'm interested in is what we do with Bledsoe's contract....that'll be common knowledge soon enough..didn't need to be aired at a player introduction interview period.

I can't disagree more with this. They're journalists not PR for the team. Who the fuck cares what mucks up the team's presentation? How many chances do these media memebers actually get to ask Joe questions in a public setting where they don't have to worry about on or off the record bulshit? They definitely should have asked about the hard cap situation, they definitely should have pressed a little more about the amount of guards and lack of size on the roster and they definitely should have asked if trying to get under the cap is something they're worried about. Basically they missed an opportunity that they might not get again unless another big move is made.

It's like you understand what an "Introduction Press Conference" is about?

I'm betting you may have been around for a while? Probably even watched and followed the team for some time as well.

The guys who signed here give a fuck but fans....they don't care about first impressions...when I hire an employee I don't want to be asked why I didn't hire a different employee on national tv...there's a time and place for the questions you want answered and a welcome format for new guys isn't it. The cap had nothing to do with this interview and shouldn't...that will come out in short order and you'll know...but you can feel let down if you want....choices..I just think your post about this is just impatience and probably you need to justify your views about all the cap and signings for your own gratification....I tune in to find out what the new guys have to say..not Fentris and Quick. I personally got zero sense that they are worried about the cap at all...I'm sure not...Grant and Payton sure aren't. Joe isn't going to show his cards to the media at this point in the off season..no GM is going to say...we're working on a deal to try and get such and such a player .....this happens between closed doors. He's not going to say..."Ant will be traded for a taller player on camera either" not sure what you expect the front office to provide you with but I think you're asking for something that they aren't going to discuss today.

When is this mythical time and place that Joe will hold another presser open to the media without another big deal being made? When has any GM called a presser to address how they plan on handling the cap? This was most of these reporters only chance to ask Joe any question in a public forum where he can't just tell them he doesn't want that question in an article. So again, when do you think they're going to get a chance to ask those questions?

Joe's agenda shouldn't matter to a good journalist. The players' feelings shouldn't matter to a good journalist unless they plan on doing some kind of player profile piece in the future which would require access to the player. Answers to pertinent questions given in a transparent forum, that they probably won't get again this season unless there are moves made at the trade deadline in over six months should be the priority for a journalist. They aren't fans, they aren't team employees and they aren't supposed to care about anything other than getting information that is important in regards to their field out to the public.

You guys act like local media are interested in writing stories that appeal to the .1% of Blazers fans who are CBA nerds. They want human interest stories that appeal to average fans. They want excitement about the team, players who are excited about being in Portland, and excitement about the upcoming season.
