Blazers will sign Anthony Tolliver, sources tell HoopsHype.com. More coming.
22 minutes ago from web

Looks like the Blazers are calling up a D-leaguer after all.

So...a PF?

I can live with that, I guess, but I would have much rather signed a SF or a C.

Hmm a 6-9 guy who averaged 20 and 10 and can shoot the 3. Sounds intriguing. I wonder if he'll see any action, but it's nice to have another healthy body out there to use.

here's what draftexpress wrote about him after the summer league
-Anthony Tolliver has been consistently impressive, doing a lot of shooting and a little bit of everything else. He is a good rebounder, a sound defender, extremely intelligent, and just a highly versatile all-around player. Don’t be surprised to see him making a team this summer…

and from the Portsmouth Invitational
Anthony Tolliver, 6’9, PF/C, Creighton
13 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, 5-8 FG, 1-2 3PT, 2-4 FT

Joseph Treutlein

Anthony Tolliver had a solid camp overall, showing off some nice passing ability, three-point range, and a well-rounded game with the many things he’s capable of doing. Tolliver shows excellent court awareness for a big man, and he passes well out of both posts. He also has the ability to step out behind the arc, shooting a flat-footed shot with decent form that he scored with a few times. In the post, Tolliver battles hard for position and usually goes up strong, as he drew quite a few fouls here, but while not showing the most advanced array of moves down low.

Defensively, Tolliver has some trouble when drawn out to the perimeter, as he couldn’t quite stick either Ivan Harris or Justin Doellman in this game when he was matched up with them, not being agile enough to risk tightly playing them, which left them open for outside shots. He hustles a lot on the defensive end in the painted area, though, and is able to get some blocks and steals off that more-so than explosiveness or excellent athletic ability, which he lacks. In the post, he’s a pretty good defender when he gets physical, but he doesn’t always do that, which is also a problem with his rebounding. He seems to get most of his rebounds due to his size and being in the right spot as opposed to throwing his weight around and using physicality to pull down boards in the crowd.

Tolliver probably isn’t an NBA player, at least not now, but he should be invited to the Orlando pre-draft camp, and with his well-rounded and smart style of play, he should make a nice complementary player in Europe.

I think he's kind of a combo forward. Whatever he is, he apparently can hit three pointers at a 41% clip (will that carry over with better defenders in his face is tough to say). My guess is Pendergraph will be back in a couple of weeks to backup Joel and because he wasn't injured during the regular season they won't have to dump the new guy if/when he comes back.

This year's D-League stats:

I've always liked his game...This might be a good addition to our team.

I follow almost all the d1 teams...I consider myself a guru of both college basketball and college football. But I'm glad you got a laugh out of it...

I always liked his game, ever since I read this thread. Until I got to this part:

he should make a nice complementary player in Europe

Now I'm not so sure.

So we had to waive someone to sign him right? Or traded 2 for 1

I remember him on that Creighton team from a couple years ago when they had Nate Funk bombing treys next to him and they ended up getting a fairly decent seed in the tournament. Tolliver was a great outside shooter in college as well. Thats all that team did was sink 3's.

Has anyone posted this yet?

Randy Livingston Memorial "On The Edge" Call-Up Rankings

1. Dontell Jefferson, Utah Flash (20.5 ppg, 6 apg, 5.1 rpg, 1.6 spg, 47% FG)

[we don't need a PG, although a 6'5" one sounds intriguing, no, we need a forward, so...]

2a. Anthony Tolliver, Idaho Stampede (20.7 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 47% FG, 43% 3pt) - I can't find a word more descriptive of Tolliver's performance than "everywhere." At 6-foot-9 and 240 pounds, Tolliver is a large man, even by basketball standards. But the threes he takes aren't typical of the 21st century pseudo-bigs who hang around the perimeter waiting for kickouts. To borrow the type of term Walt Frazier enjoys using, I can remember few other occasions when a player seems as omnipresent as AT - sprinting to the sideline to snare long rebounds from unsuspecting guards and fighting his way to loose balls amidst the pack inside as well. Defensively, more of the same. One second, Tolliver's jumping out to double a guard on a high screen-and-roll; the next, waiting at the rim to provide help on penetration or swat a shot out of vicinity of the basket. (Steve Weinman, D-League Digest)

2b. Morris Almond

I drives me crazy when people dont put the actual TOPIC in the title of the thread!

We need a banger. This guy looks like one. Aldridge needs help in a big way. He is having to drift from PF to C for most the game. Someone needs to give young player like minutes at PF until Outlaw comes back.

NATE FUNK is by far the freshest name in the history of names! EVER! I will name my next kid this! NATE FUNK LUKROFKA!

that's a hell of a receedo for 24 yrs old.

still, kid looks like he can ball - good stuff! :)

I saw the same thing. He needs to call my dogg Jarrett Jack's barber! NOW!

So this Tolliver guy (I ain't gonna lie - I've never seen/heard of him) is 6'9", he can shoot the lights out, he rebounds, he plays good defense, he's an intelligent player . . . can somebody tell me why this guy was in the D League? Sounds like he should have been a lottery pick!

Why were we awarded a 16th roster spot? I thought that only happened when you were down to 7 healthy guys?

Because of all our injuries. The league felt sorry for us!

I'm just going to guess, but I'd wager he's a player stuck between two positions (not quick enough to guard threes, and not big enough to guard fours) The D-league and Europe is littered with guys like that.

It's a hardship exception, which apparently can be invoked when you lose a fourth player to injury (Mills and Pendergraph don't count since they were injured before the season started) and they are expected to miss more than 3 games. The contract is unguaranteed and when either Nic, Rudy or Travis return to the active roster they have to waive him. If he turns out to be worth keeping then the Blazers will have to either make a 2 for 1 trade or waive Mills.

Yeah but there are tons of guys in the NBA like that. Channing Frye. Matt Bonner. A 6'9" guy who does ONE thing REALLY well usually ends up making a roster somewhere.

Channing is 6'11" and Bonner is a broad 6'10", both big enough (ie strong enough and long enough) to guard fours. This tolliver kid is 6'7" barefoot and 6'8" in shoes. I think you're going to be surprised how short he'll look next to LaMarcus.
