How about we just completely end gun sales in America from here on forward (other than private sales with major restrictions)? If someone wants a gun, they can inherit it or buy from an existing gun owner. But if there are over four hundred million guns in America, that's enough. The arithmetic says that enough guns exist in this country so that every single American can have one (and then some). Ending gun sales is not saying Americans can't own guns, they just can't buy new ones and will have to be satisfied with their "old" ones. See how that works? They have a right to bear arms, they just don't have the right to buy them "commercially" anymore. Both sides "win"..........
You will very quickly have people making their own guns, ammunition, and magazines, and fully automatic guns are far easier to make then semiautomatic.

Extended magazines are incredibly simple to make once you've done it a few times.

This is another problem with banning the AR. You'll get an influx of far more dangerous weapons in the Black market.

Context matters in those blanket statements. Police can obviously not be counted on to insert themselves between an armed psycho and elementary school children.

They've deliberately avoided doing so on multiple occasions. This is not people making mistakes, this is how they are trained.

And as a general rule, getting close to a gun doesn't make people (including children) want to kill other people.

1000 rounda of ammo goes pretty quick when you are sport shooting with a group. Or if you're trying to stock up before the next lockdown.

In general, 9mm isn't used for hunting anyway. That's a handgun round. And it is comparably cheap, which is great for target practice with a gun that has some kick.

Especially in a group.
there is no general rule about rage and violence. also you can take the police in that town to task but not my cousin who's a damned good sheriff or my son's college roommate who's a great police officer....it's like saying all gun owners are violent......practice what you preach...I grew up hunting and butchering livestock and a 22 caliber short round will bring down an 800 pound steer....my dad used them because it was the cheapest ammo...never failed....I also trapped animals and hunted with a rifle and a shotgun....good hunters don't shoot much and as far as sports shooting...I have zero interest in that as a sport. I don't believe anyone needs 1000 rounds of ammo ever...all my hunting years with my dad and brothers we never kept that amount of ammo around..hunted regularly

You keep on saying people will be making their own guns, like it's a threat... Stupid people that shoot up places are stupid and won't be building a homemade arsenal. I think we disagree on this.

Students aren't psychotic killers. Being close to a gun doesn't make a person want to kill. That's just not how it works.

Some of them apparently are.

27 school shootings this year's says too many are.

Those who have the desire to kill like the Ulvade shooter or the Michigan kid...you don't think they would obsess over how to get control of the teachers gun?

What about ammo people make at home? Is that illegal? What about ammo that people have stocked up on? That stuff lasts decades...

If you're going to do something like this it's going to have a sunset provision. I don't think you'll get that aneay, but just assuming you did.

If there aren't nearly immediate significant measurable proven drops in gun crime it's just going to sunset. And there is no way to make that kind of impact consider the sheer volume of existing and unregistered guns and ammo in this country.

I understand that it would be great to be able to track down a murderer easily. But there is just too much political momentum against anything that can allow that to happen more effectively by further regulating guns in this country.

It's just a shame that we're too stubborn to shift the political will to things which are not as fervently opposed, but would likely significantly reduce violent crime and murder rates (far more so than any gun control ever has), while also being generally great for the country as a whole.

Sure, you can grandfather in a bunch of shit. But you can also have financial and liability incentives for people to bring in existing guns and ammo into compliance.

I have an 1892 Winchester rifle that has been in my family since it was purchased new. It still has the metal loop on the stock, which if you know about this rifle you know is very rare. This gun is part of my family history. The serial number and manufacture date are actually online. This gun is invaluable to my family's history. I have a rider for it on the home policy. If the law said I had to register it with the police/state/feds to continue to have it on my insurance, I FUCKING WOULD!

And yes, there are no instant answers or solutions to these problems. But that is the way things are in life. There are no instant answers to cancer or global warming or most things. But to not try to slowly and steadily make things better is wrong.

They'll buy them on the black market.
It's making it more difficult to acquire. The ease of access of going in to Walmart and walking out with a murder took versus having to know someone who knows someone selling, or has a 3d printer.

Making your own child porn is easier than trying to buy it so we shouldn't have laws trying to stop people from owning the child porn that is already out there because it will just force people to make their own.

I didn't say anything about all police. I said we can't count on them as a group. I didn't say they are all bad people.

They have proven repeatedly that we can't rely on them.

Again, 9mm is very rarely used for hunting. In most cases it would be illegal to use it for hunting.

That's not the purpose for those 1000 rounds.

Sure. But it will restrict law abiding owners far more. And if we can't count on police.... That's not a good ratio.

Criminals will have guns and ammo and we'd be at their mercy.

That's why something like this will never happen. Not enough people are interested in being in that situation.

I'm glad they are. Not all cops are bad. Many are brave and would've done what cops in Uvalde failed to do. It's the cops in Uvalde that need to be taken to task, I agree.

Texas police are holding a press conference right now.

They are now claiming they were trying to negotiate with the gunman, that's why they didn't rush the classroom. But the gunmen wasn't responding to the attempts to negotiate and kept firing at them when they approached the classroom so they pulled back and tried to negotiate some more.

Fucking clown show.

Because we have a codified right to child porn? I get that you're joking, but I'm telling you the reasons we will not be able to restrict the number of guns.

There isn't enough support for it and too many people want guns. Anything short of a drastic restriction in the number of Firearms will not result in "statistically significant" improvements.

Which will result in the law sunsetting or being repealed.

27 school shootings this year. That's about 5 and a half a month! This shit has to stop.

So include severe (as in serious prison time) for making guns and magazines, or for buying on the black market. And if a gun or magazine you made made, or bought on the black market is used in a shooting, you too go to jail whether you pulled the trigger or not. In many states I can (or soon will be) put in prison for simply driving a woman to get an abortion. Same frickin' difference. The ONLY thing stopping America from doing the right thing is that "we" don't want to. Everything else is extraneous bullshit.

Negotiating? That's the best their sorry asses could come up with?

How and why would you try to negotiate with someone who has already killed children? Who is in a school with children?

We already have gun restrictions and you support them.

The meaning of the 2nd amendment was confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2008... It'll likely rule again to restrict states rights to enforce gun control in the next year or so.

It'll take a constitutional convention to do more. And 2/3 of states will have to approve the changes.
Oh you mean The political Supreme Court and the conveniently divided up and mapped out districts that prevent anything from being done on this?

How could you prove they made it? There would be no markings. And they can't restrict your right to manufacture your own, as that would be violating the 2nd ammendment.

People think this stuff is so easy, but it's just not. It is incredibly hard to do any kind of effective gun control without violating the 2nd ammendment, or looking like you intend to do so.

And that isn't going to change without a constitutional convention and a 2/3 vote. And nobody wants a constitutional convention because then everything in the constitution can be changed... It's too risky.

And kids and people here illegally.

BTW, the 2nd amendment does not support these restrictions.
Then somebody can challenge those restrictions and risk the Supreme Court ruling on favor of children and dangerous people having the right to bare arms as well.

That's not my thing.
