According to these Texas cops I was barricaded when I took a shit this morning.

I really wouldn’t recommend being constipated at a Texas school anytime soon. I can hear it now on the police radio, “Yeah, we got us an active shitter situation. He’s been in there a half hour with the door locked.” Eventually, they’re coming in with guns blazing.

But I locked the door. That will confuse them for at least an hour.

You could build a hell of a hallway for a million bucks... or a real nice fence around the school with only 1 entrance, which is monitored. This is a far easier solution to attain than restricting access to guns enough to make a difference.

Nobody is opposed to fences or hallways.

So let's turn schools into prisons?

They are far better with them than if they didn't own guns. Like, they know how to aim, and use the safety... load them... clean them...
No, we are definitely a far more formidable force than if we didn't have access to firearms. No question about that.

Right, we can kill kids far better and faster.

Otherwise, what are we fighting for? Don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Antietam...

Huh? You are keeping people out, not in. This is technology we've had for well over a hundred years... My kids school only has one way in. You have to ring the bell to get in, and the office has to hit a button to let them in.

They can get out 30 different ways at any time.

That helps. Most schools in Portland do that. But, it won't matter if its a student already in the building.

No metal detectors necessary. Our school doesn't look like a prison at all. It looks like an incredibly inviting campus, with nice green fields surrounding it and play equipment, etc. Our kids absolutely love it.

If a kid wants to bring a gun to school in his backpack there is nothing you're going to do to stop that. Except maybe disallow backpacks and put them in uniforms. Even then, you can buy under clothes holsters.

And as we've already discussed, it would take literally hundreds of years to remove enough guns to limit access this much.

Yeah, there is. Parents can keep them out their kids Hands by keeping them stored in safes where they can't get them.

I did. I believe I know the answer to his question "Why?". The answer is politics. Neither side is willing to admit what the real problems are, or are willing to discuss feasible solutions to address them.

I have come with several solutions here. So have others. Many of these would be easily feasible. We aren't even senators or governor's or congress people.

These ideas might not eliminate all school shootings from happening, but even if they cut the number in half or even by a third, that's a start. That's something.

I don't believe that a safe exists that will prevent an 18 year old kid who is willing to kill his parents out.

Is there any evidence that any of these ideas would cut school shootings by a third or a half?

How do we plan on instituting these ideas? Like, getting republicans to vote for them?

Are they feasible if we can't institute them?

Oh, they exist. It would stop some of them and that's something.

I'm just saying even if it didn't stop them all and it stopped some it matters. Every child's life we can save matters.

None of my ideas involve taking away guns. Why shouldn't the Republicans vote for them?

Why does it have to be a third or half? If it cut it by even a 20th, that's kid's lives saved at the inconvenience of sport shooters.

Right

Is there any evidence for a 20th?
I dunno. The study from the assault ban you posted said there wasn't significant enough, but what is "enough"? Do you tell these 19 kids families that they aren't significant enough to justify a ban?

Right. Tired of this we can't save all the kids, so let's not save any bullshit.

The CDC has said that there are 500,000 to 3,000,000 defensive gun uses per year in the US. How many children would have died if gun rights were restricted?

Improving our Gini Coefficient would reduce gun crime immensely, saving 10s of thousands of lives per year, thousands of children.

I think we should release any/all persons who are in prison on personal use drug charges…..and provide them w/ the medical care/support they need. Then create strict gun laws that mandate thorough back ground checks and intense training programs. Then outlaw all automatic weapons and high capacity magazines. Provide financial compensation for any and all guns turned in. Then fill the available space in the prisons with the people who break these new gun laws. Never ever going to happen….but the dude doing a 20 year bid as 3rd time weed offender is far less of a threat than the dude with a basement full of AR 15s and armor piercing ammo.

I don't think you're going to be able to do anything like that unless you get the supply low enough that guns are rare.
We need to help those kids before they get to that point if we want to make an impact here...
