What changed is another year together of an old stale core that went as far as they could go and was done together. Combine that with the team losing players and adding no one of any value last summer, and the sulking unhappiness of your captain and whatever you want to call the drama of last summer, and you have the mess that is the 24/25 NYR. It had nothing to do with WAY overpaid Goodrow not being here.

It was done for this core after the Florida series, and again it was obvious to anyone really paying attention. Brooks said it, other writers say it, I said it, Mess on this board said it. It was obvious, and core changes didn't happen. Now we are where we are, and we look forward to hopefully a productive summer.

I like Carrick, great pickup for $1 mil but Drury also traded for Reilly Smith for more money and 2 draft picks. Goodrow was more of a role player than scorer who had your back and the experience of winning 2 Cups, the Rangers may have come up short postseason but they had no problem making the playoffs with Goodrow on the team.

Traded away 2nd and 5th round picks for Smith - got back Soucy for Smith.

The reading public can decide if that was a good transaction, and worth it for 3rd line wing Smith, who was asked to fill a role above his capabilities on the 1st line.

As for the Goodrow/Carrick swap, I think that's like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Both are decent/okay 4th line options, but neither really adds a ton of value big picture, and Carrick does it for a lot less money.

Goodrow didn't help the Rangers avoid embarrassment against NJ two years ago, not his fault, but he's also not some savior that would have saved everything for this stale team this season.

Biggest problems of this organization are not role players. It's coaches not holding players accountable. Especially the vets. No defensive system. The organization continuing to play its top scoring forward prospects like role players. Not giving them lots of PP time. Being terrible at drafting centers.

It's interesting, if we are being honest, not holding the vets accountable has been a Rangers issue for YEARS no matter who the coach is. It makes me wonder if it's more of an internal pressure thing, than a coaching decision. Like this is NYC, you must play the big names we bring in to draw in fans no matter how well they are playing or if they suck. I think it's a Rangers organizational mandate, not a coaching decision. I have seen it go on for far too long, with too many coaches and overpaid vets to not see it that way.

I guess that's also why the Rangers haven't won S for decades outside of 94. The Rangers recipe is big marquee names for the NYC crowd, over a cohesive well-balanced hard-working team. The big marquee names can do whatever they want without accountability, because that's what the NYR are all about to dazzle Broadway, all sizzle no steak. They just about never build the team the right way and reward the right deserving players.

The best example from this season is Zibanejad. The fact that he kept playing major minutes, despite playing awful lazy hockey, and refusing to shoot, is mind-blowing. How Lav hasn't said to him either you shoot the puck more or you're benched, is crazy. But, just like every coach before him, Lav has to play the big marquee names no matter what and try to win at all costs with those big marquee names. That's the Rangers organizational strategy in a nutshell.
