Trying to'shoot your way out' of a slump is one thing.
Continuing to blatantly jack up bricks when some teammates are shooting much better but can't get shots is another.

Biggest problem tonight, IMO, was on the offensive end, and it was three-fold.

The most damaging of those three things was kind of a return to Stotts ball. Too much dribbling without going anywhere. Not enough passing. Some bad and unnecessary shots early in the shot clock (Chauncey gave CJ an ear-full for one when he took one). We had a problem matching up with the Cavs' height at the defensive end, but, if we did more quick dribble drive, pitch and pass around the perimeter, we could have taken better advantage of making their bigs have to try to scramble and recover when we were on offense. By playing so much one on one, we played to their defensive strength.

Dame, of course, took too many ill-advised shots trying to shoot himself out of a slump. In reality, he was shooting us out of the game. I know it's tough to relearn, but he has to let the game come to him sometimes. It's going to be better for him and the team in the long run.

Finally, Nurk's focus was off again. He made a couple of good plays, but, as seems to happen, he wasn't really mentally engaged and got dominated inside as a result. This team goes nowhere if he's not trying to destroy guys with picks and diving strong to the basket for the 26 minutes per night he's going to play. It can't be a once every four game thing.

Larry Nance Jr only got one FG attempt in 21 minutes?

Nance got 1 and Little got 1....ridiculously selfish ball from our mini-backcourt. (17-46...37%)
Meanwhile, the entire rest of the team was 23-44...53%.

So half the shots are taken by the worst shooting duo....again, and playing little defense. This movie is so familiar. Seems like I've seen it before.

CAVALIERS NOTES:

  • With tonight’s victory, the Cavaliers are now 5-2 in their last seven games (since Oct. 23), its best seven game stretch since going 6-1 from March 28-April 9, 2018.
  • Cleveland had six players finish with double-digit scoring efforts for the fourth time this season (3-1) (JARRETT ALLEN with 24 PTS, COLLIN SEXTON with 21 PTS, DARIUS GARLAND with 19 PTS, DYLAN WINDLER with 13 PTS, CEDI OSMAN with 12 PTS, EVAN MOBLEY with 11 PTS).
  • The Cavs shot 15-30 (.500) from beyond the arc, their highest three-point percentage of the season. They also shot a season-high 39-74 (.527) from the field, marking the third time this season shooting .500+ from the field.
  • JARRETT ALLEN recorded his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 24 points on 9-15 (.600) shooting, a season-high 17 rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal in 40 minutes. Allen is shooting 55-78 (.705) through nine games so far this season and entered the game 2nd in the NBA in field goal percentage. He has recorded a steal in five consecutive games, the longest streak of his career. It was the third time in his career he has finished a game with 24+ points and 17+ rebounds (26 PTS, 18 REB on Feb. 24, 2021 vs HOU and 26 PTS, 17 REB on Feb. 21, 2021 vs. OKC).
  • COLLIN SEXTON finished with 21 points on 8-13 (.615) shooting from the field, three rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes. Tonight was his third game with at least 20 points this season.
  • DARIUS GARLAND contributed his third double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points on 6-9 (.667) shooting from the field, a game-high 10 assists, two rebounds and one steal in 36 minutes. Garland entered the game T-8th in the NBA in assists per game. It was the 10th game of his career with 10+ assists.
  • EVAN MOBLEY tallied his fourth double-double of the season (most among 2021 NBA rookies), finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds and one block in 40 minutes. He is the first Cavs rookie to record back-to-back double-doubles since Matthew Dellavedova (March 20 & 22, 2014) [via Elias Sports Bureau). Mobley has recorded a block in seven of nine game this season and entered the game leading all NBA rookies in total blocks and blocks per game.
  • DYLAN WINDLER scored a season-high 13 points on 4-5 (.800) shooting from the field and 3-3 (1.000) from beyond the arc to go with three assists and one steal in 21 minutes. His 11 points in the first half were his most points scored in any half of his NBA career.
  • CEDI OSMAN contributed 12 points on 4-7 (.571) shooting from beyond the arc and three rebounds in 17 minutes. It is his third straight game scoring in double figures and he is shooting 14-24 (.583) from three-point range over that span. He has 403 3FGM for his career and is 12 three-pointers away from passing Mo Williams (414 3FG) for 9th on the Cavaliers all-time three point list.

TRAIL BLAZERS NOTES:

  • DAMIAN LILLARD led the Blazers with 26 points, a team-high eight assists, three rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes.
  • NORMAN POWELL chipped in 23 points, three rebounds, two assists, a game-high tying three steals and two blocks in 32 minutes.

Yet Neil always needs to see just a little bit more.

as long as we're wallowing in angst & loathing, and contemplating the possibility of a rebuild, how about doubling down on tonight and picking a scab. let's re-do the 2017 draft. What would have been the 'best' option in a most perfect Blazer world fantasy:

* 1) Donovan Mitchell & Kyle Kuzma (or Dillon Brooks)

* 2) Bam Adebayo & Dillon Brooks

* 3) John Collins, OG Anunoby, & Kyle Kuzma (or Dillon Brooks)

* 4) John Collins, Jarrett Allen, & Dillon Brooks

I like what I saw from Jarrett Allen tonight but Anunoby is a really nice wing. Averaging 20 & 6 this season

obviously, Mitchell and Adebayo are all-star talents and elite talent is a big step toward contention.

Simons-Little-Collins-Anunoby/Allen-Brooks/Kuzma is a nice young core but are any capable of star-power?

***************************************

or would the best option have been to trade the 3 picks and CJ for Paul George?

I'm weary of full rebuilds because we see how some teams get stuck in purgatory constantly missing on draft picks, but on the other hand constantly losing in the first round is almost as bad and I don't think we will get out of the first round with this team. Very few teams in nba history have won a championship with their point guard being their best player and Dame doesn't look himslef.

At least we’ll get that good old “incorrect no call” in the report.

i missed the most of this roadtrip. life getting in the way.

don't think i'll be re-watching them

I would say, that after you went on worst slump in your career - and probably for a reason - shooting the ball up in the air in last seconds of the game is not smartest thing you can do.

On the eye test it looks like Chuncey is losing the team to Lillard and CJ again. This is obviously their team, period.

Even in the primary school teacher know what to do with this duo, that keeps breaking your lessons.
We either make the trade or make Lillard playing coach and let him go for his MVP.

Remember the, “ I’m so lookin forward to Billups actually holding players accountable for their play….. Stotts never did that!”
At what point will we see this kick in?

Still eating for 30 games to judge, but my 12-18 prediction looks pretty good at this point. Especially after these next 4 games.

my 30-52 win prediction for the season looking pretty realistic
Considering we’ve made the playoffs 6 straight years in the Dame/CJ era and we have decent depth this time, how is your prediction realistic?

But I thought it was the coach.
it was and it is

what weve seen so far this season is nothing different to terry stotts offense and its nothing chauncey billups said it will be... theres no ball & player movement, we play 3 on 5 on offense, nurk & roco are complete non-factors on offense, thats not formula for success... go look at phoenix suns and utah jazz, thats how portland trail blazers should play, but for some reason we dont... dame and cj mccollum need to take a step back, powell needs to pass the ball more, its a team sport

I was thinking we might blow up the team near the trade deadline considering the pressure from this offseason, if we are way below expectations.

Obviously, Billlups talked a lot about ball movement and involving Nurk.
If Dame and CJ can't do it, I would like to trade both.
I like Powell, but seems to play like other duo.
I don't want to see this over again.
If we have to blow it up to make players listen to the coaching stuff, then fuckin blow it up.

I been tired the Dame and CJ duo for couple years this is no exception. One or both need to go but thinking CJ should be first I am tired all that over dribbling he does to get a shot off. Being little selfish not a problem but totally not looking for other guys that a problem. Not pushing the ball is the one problem I see both these guards it just seems like if they push the ball they can't call there own number when they bring the ball up slow. Billups needs get hold on it before it's to late. Billups sit talk all kind impressive things but that just talk until I see translate to the team play on the floor then that's all it is just talk. But I have to say there not giving up as many points as they did last year but there offense is not clicking at all.

Part of this is on the players. They say they want to be held accountable and coached, but if they then refuse that, it's tough to do. Nurk complained about Stotts but still seems unwilling to be engaged. Nance called him out last night for not finishing a cut that would have let to an easy basket....and Nurk just stared off into space.

MeJ continues to be MeJ. Billups actually called him out after a horrible shot selection air ball, but I doubt that does anything to change his MeJ ways as he is taking more shots than anyone on the team and keeping other hot players from getting shots.

Dame is not shooting well but that seems more injury/feel/ball based than anything else as his assists are at a career high. If he were even close to his averages in terms of shooting percentage, his production would be maybe the best it's ever been.

They saying Dame reinjured his stomach in the 2nd quarter. To me don't think has even heal from the summer. He needs to get it fix because he is not going help the team if he hurt.

He should some time week off. The chances of winning the next 3 games are very low in the team's current playing form.

who is saying that?

if that abdominal injury is still nagging him, the one he had in the Olympics, than it seems any rest won't help. That might require surgery

still, I haven't noticed him moving any differently than normal. He seems to have the same explosion on drives

Yep, this pisses me off, take the good shots that come to you and quit the wild stuff, let the game come to you Dame's shooting is killing us

Saw him grimace pretty good after another player reached in on one of his drives. Guys a warrior wouldn’t surprise me if there is something wrong

Curious if anybody has links to the team announcing Dame “re-injured” his stomach?
