It will come down to game 82 to determine the round 1 matchups in the West. As we head into the last game, the only locked in West matchup is the Wild-Stars, with the Stars having home ice. Literally every other matchup will be determined by game 81, even though all 8 teams are locked in.
The Kings can play Colorado, which is who they'll play if they finish as a WC since Utah clinched the top WC and will play the Pacific winner (this is where the Kings sit currently as we enter game 82). The Kings can also play Vegas, Edmonton, or Anaheim. The only teams the Kings cannot play are Utah, Minnesota, and Dallas.
Vegas has home ice in round 1, either against Utah if they win the Pacific, or against the Oilers, Ducks or Kings if the Oilers get 2 points and Vegas gets 0 points, which would give the Oilers the Pacific division win based on the RW tiebreaker, and Vegas would finish 2nd in the division.
The Oilers could win the Pacific, or finish as the 2nd WC and play Colorado. If the Oilers get 1 point in their final game, they'll have home ice in round 1, which they will since they host Vancouver in their last game. So you have to expect the Oilers win that game, end with 93 points, and finish 1st or 2nd in the Pacific, with home ice, depending upon whether Vegas gets a least 1 point at home against Seattle tonight.
The Ducks are just like the Kings and can play Colorado, Vegas, Edmonton, or LA.
My best guess is this:
Vegas gets at least 1 point home against Seattle and Edmonton beats Vancouver in Edmonton. That would give Vegas the Pacific division, they would play Utah in round 1. The Oilers finish 2nd in the Pacific and will host either Anaheim or LA. The Ducks and Kings will play Colorado and Edmonton, just not sure which team plays which yet. The Ducks play at Nashville; the Kings play at Calgary, difficult to predict those two games, but the Kings will need to gain 1 point on the Ducks to finish ahead of them and play Edmonton instead of Colorado since the Ducks hold the RW tiebreaker over the Kings.
Long story short, unfortunately, barring Vegas getting 0 points against Seattle OR Edmonton getting 0 points against Vancouver, both HIGHLY unlikely, the Kings will NOT make it past the first round (if Edmonton gets at least 1 point against Vancouver the Ducks/Kings cannot finish better than 3rd in the Pacific/the 2nd WC - which means the Ducks/Kings play Vegas or more likely Edmonton and Colorado). The Kings are almost assuredly going to play Colorado or Edmonton in round 1 (long shot Vegas if Vegas gets 0 points against Seattle in Vegas), which means goodbye in 5 games, maybe 6, see you next season. The Kings are not beating Colorado or Edmonton; therefore, they are not making it past round 1.
Meanwhile, the East is 100% locked in:
Sens-Canes & Flyers-Pens in the Met bracket AND Bruins-Sabres & Canadiens-Lightning in the Atlantic bracket.
Should be an interesting final two nights to determine almost all of the West playoff matchups for round 1.
