GAME THREAD: BLAZERS @ WARRIORS - 11/23/13, SATURDAY, 7:30 PM PST, CSNNW

Welcome to our community

It was a little dispute over a cricket swing.
I made a crack in the game thread about Bogut and Freeland giving each other shit about the cricket.

Australia and England are competing in "The Ashes" cricket series at the moment. The Ashes is the oldest cricket series in the world. It is older than the game of basketball (The Ashes started in 1882, basketball was invented in 1891).

Australia just won the first match of the series on day 4 of the match. During the Trail Blazers/Warriors game actually; maybe they were getting updates on the bench, and Australia's victory is what sparked things .

Dub, how about a list of NBA players you've noticed who speak non-American English. There are 2 from Australia now. Steven Adams from NZ.

You'd think they'd (Commonwealth) all be friends, given the way Batum is chummy with Tony Parker.

'Bout to hit up this game thread! Can't wait to read your guys reaction to the fight! I got halfway out the tunnel to help my boys before security stopped me! The HCP has his boys' backs!

I saw you dive into the tunnel head-first! You must have gotten your directions mixed up!

Just finished the game...That was a one impressive fourth quarter and from a defensive standpoint if they play with that kind of attitude, will and dominance, they will be a handful for anyone in the league.

Missed a great win to watch a dumpster fire of a football game in freezing weather. Lovely.

Told you yeddiden!

Nice mags, incredible game and win. Just got home and still stoked even now. Seeing my son's excitement to experience his first Blazer win at Oracle is priceless; best money I've ever spent.

Yeah, I wanted to congratulate him on finally getting to see a win with his kid. But I couldn't spell his name either! ;)

Wait a minute --- he must be the reason we won. He has to go to all the games now.

LOL neither of you got the name right but whatevs...not sweating the small stuff after a game like this!

I definitely make most of the GSW games but can't make a Kingspeed like roadie with my work/family schedule :(

Well Batum and Parker are chummy because they're from the same country (although IMHO Parker freezes out Batum on the French national team, but that's a whole other discussion); but the players from British Commonwealth countries are from different countries, and tend to have an intense, but nominally friendly rivalry because of rivalries in other sports (especially cricket, rugby union, and rugby league).

Basketball is almost non existent in most Commonwealth countries. England is a non factor in basketball. Australia and New Zealand hate each on the on the basketball court.

Off the top of my head:

Australia:
Andrew Bogut - Warriors
Patty Mills - Spurs
Aron Baynes - Spurs
Matthew Dellavedova - Cavs
Kyrie Irving - Cavs

New Zealand:
Steven Adams

England:
Joel Freeland
Luol Deng (sort of)
Ben Gordon (sort of)

That's not even including players from Canada (yes, Canada is a Commonwealth country) like Nash, or African British Commonwealth countries.

Are you running for office?

The middle picture says Taylor in the corner.

Dub: Kyrie Irving, hmmm...Anyway, NBA refs must hear British or Australian accents yelling at them more often than I thought. I was thinking that Bogut vs. Freeland is a rarity.

The video looks like those guys play soccer, hockey, rugby, and Australian football. Do New Zealanders play the latter, or only regular international soccer? Do Australians call soccer soccer or football, like most of the world?

Dub: Kyrie Irving, hmmm...
He was born in Australia, so I'm claiming him! He can't become POTUS, but he can be elected Prime Minister of Australia. He has declared for Team USA though. :smiley-cry:

Nope, Kiwi's don't play Australian Football. No-one outside of Australia does, except amateurs. There is a USA league, and a Portland team.

The Kiwi's almost made the FIFA World Cup Finals, got spanked by Mexico though. They're mad about Rugby Union, and are the best in the world (not that you'd know it based on the number of Rugby World Cups they haven't won).

Do Australians call soccer soccer or football, like most of the world?
Always called it soccer in the past, but there has been a big push in the media for the last few years to call it football, and it's slowly starting to catch on. In Australia if someone is talking about "football", they could be talking about Australian Football, Rugby League, Rugby Union, or Association Football (soccer). It can be confusing for the uninitiated.

Thanks. One last question. Why are the Blazers one of your favorite teams? How did you connect to them?

When I was a kid a family friend came from Boring, Oregon (still lives there). Years later when I started watching the NBA (and everyone was on the Bulls bandwagon) I chose to support Portland because I knew someone who lived in Oregon.

Wow, that's a loose connection holding you; I hope you remain a Blazer fan. My father was in Australia (and every other country from there to India) several times in the Air Force. The closest I got was when I lived in Japan. Thanks for making me a little smarter.

👍 that's awesome man!
