Gamel traded to Mariners

After being named International League MVP yesterday, the Yanks traded Ben Gamel to Seattle for two pitchers, 18 and 19 years old at the rookie level league.

I was kinda expecting and looking forward to seeing him get some playing time with the September call-ups and Hicks' hammy injury.

All of these "young" acquisitions particularly the outfielders, most of whom aren't exactly lighting up the world in the minors have me wondering....
How would the Yanks be doing currently if they had proceeded in the same manner with the exception of trading Miller?
The three kids Sanchez, Judge and Austin were already on schedule and in the Yankee system with more homegrown talent/drafts in the system BEFORE the deadline trades- Refsnyder, Mason Williams, Fowler, Cave and their first round pick Blake Rutherford.
Cessa and Green were acquired last off season.

It would've been interesting to see where this team would've been this year, and next year with Betances AND Miller in the bullpen.

The more youth and prospects you have the better your chances of developing a core for the future. In any organization all of your prospects aren't going to pan out so it's better to stock the farm and then hope a decent percentage pan out. Not making an available trade for an organization's high ranking prospect or prospects really wouldn't of made any sense for this team. Especially, when at the deadline this was a 52-52 team that just came off getting swept by the Rays. Keep Miller at that point for what purpose? Even with some better play they're still on the outside of the second wild card spot. The idea is to get this team back to competing for divisions and deep runs in the playoffs. Not being a possible fringe playoff team.

After the arrival of those kids the Yankees finished August with a 17-11 record, improving their season series against Boston, and Baltimore. I think most of us were happy with the infusion of youth but having higher hopes for next season. At it stands right now the Yankees improved against Baltimore and Boston and stand at .500 against those teams and Tampa. The downer for the division was the 3-9 against Toronto. Had that been 6-6 the Yankees would have been right in the middle of a four team race. Glad the Yankees made those deal, future looks good and as we fans know they still have some shedding to do, improve the SP and Pen, I liked what I saw of Gamel but a couple more young pitchers is always nice.

I hear ya. Collect as many good prospects as possible.

I'm totally on board with the Yanks getting younger, no doubt this team was indeed quite stagnant at the deadline and moving Chapman & Beltran were no brainers.
I've always said and believed the team was committed to getting younger and was generally going to replace the veteran players and expiring big contracts with their prospects and possibly other younger players via trades, which is what they also did with Didi and Castro.

With the Miller thing - I know hindsight is 20-20 but I found it to be ironic that the Yanks HAVE climbed back into the WC race which itself seemed unlikely and the young players who have stepped in were already here and weren't acquired at the deadline.

The one player acquired at the deadline who has had an impact was Warren who has so far pitched well overall for the Yanks. As I said, I realize hindsight is 20-20 but in Miller's case - he's just so darn good and -imo- just might be the best most dominant reliever the past three years up to the present and has a reasonable contract through next year. I couldn't help but wonder if having Warren AND Miller during this period would have the Yanks right there in a WC spot and closer to 1st place and should the Yanks win a WC game, having Warren, Betances and Miller makes the Yanks significantly better in a playoff series.....lol, just sayin'.....we would certainly see less of these current mid relievers.
And, looking towards next year- I don't think it's unreasonable with a couple more moves and acquisitions for the Yanks to contend and I would tend to believe a trio of Warren, Betances and Miller gives the Yanks one of the better bullpens in the league.
Let's remember, the Yanks would also have Miller as a valuable trade chip for next year's deadline to a contender.

I'm not finding fault or disagreeing with the Yanks trading Miller- the Yanks did acquire a couple of highly regarded young relievers and top rated outfielder/hitter prospect.

I was just wondering......what if.... lol

Kid had a very good year at Scranton. Would have liked to see him platoon for those two lead off
hitters.......but Trashman saw the opportunity for a quick kill. Obtaining two RP prospects from
Seattle. This transaction won't pay off until possibly 2020.

Gamel, 24 yr old LH batter.
Didn't distinguished himself at lower levels but came along when moved to AAA in 2015 when he batted .300/.830 OPS, 500 AB, and 2016 batting .308/.785 OPS- 26 2b- 19/27 SB- 497 AB.

It seems the prevailing thought behind trading him was the Yanks' being deep in similiar type outfielders- LH hitters who haven't yet shown alot of power.

Yanks got two pitchers 18 and 19 yrs old for Gamel.
Its nice to accumulate alot of 18-20 year old prospects- and you're probably going to need a whole bunch of them in order to have a couple of them pan out.
The funny thing is, out of all of the Yanks' prospects, young players/acquisitions, Gamel was the one who has been the most consistent and most successful at the higher level (AAA) for back to back seasons.

In all of the moves and deals, I would've preferred the Yanks somehow obtain 1 or 2 more pitchers and/or hitters who were 22-24 years old while doing well at AA- AAA

Saw an ESPN highlight video of Gamel making a catch out in right Field, damn spectacular, probably made the MLB highlight reels.
