St. Johns is a tough place to grow up, you have to have thick skin and make the right friends to turn out alright. Its cleaned up a lot these days, very gentrified. It still has its problems, but is more gen-x hippie than anything else. A lot of people who grew up in different parts of Portland never go there, because they never really have to.

When I was growing up in Chicago, there'd be "Latin Eagles" spray painted on walls all over certain neighborhoods.

Someone with guts would alter the L and E so it read "Eatin Bagles"
 
The mexican gangs are by far the worst. Great show though, I watch it whenever it's on.

When I was younger, you had to have a hog to be in a gang. The thought of someone rolling up in a chopped Honda Accord, or any car for that matter, and claiming to be a gang, well, let's just say the laughter would be deafening.

Besides the local chapter of the Hell's Angels, there were 3 main clubs in the Portland area back then. The Gypsy Jokers, Brother Speed, and I think the Outsiders. I met a few of them at keggers and concerts. Typical brain-dead punks with little to no redeeming value. The Mongols have moved into Oregon recently, and turf wars were expected from these mental midgets.
