Gary "Hard Cap" Payton

In all seriousness, I don't think any of us have the conditioning regime these guys do. Sure i work less making me more brittle. But if a person keeps their body in top shape, I'm not seeing the decline from 26-32 regarding brittleness that is being implied.

It's a fair point. I honestly didn't see noticeable decline until about 34-35 but even then it was very slight. Now at 40 I really watched my times and performance drop drastically. I was not playing NBA basketball however.

Everyones body is different. Father time never fails, though. It is not unreasonable risk of injury increases in your 30's. No matter how in shape someone is.

Just wrapped up a week of work and industry events. Let me tell you, it was a lot of food, wine, chatting and walking around in the heat. I’m aching all over the place today. Getting old is hell sometimes!

Looks like he is still bothered by the ab thing......arguably the highest BBIQ player we have and is great on a team with other high IQ guys. So, not great.
That's a real turnaround from when we had him before, because at the time he was a stat stuffer who didn't seem to know how to play. The magic Warriors effect?

Ahhh forgot about this thread. With how uncompetitive this Blazers roster is this year while being very healthy I almost feel like the opportunity cost of being hard cap has become much less important?

Previously I assumed this team would be at least in the playin range and could potentially trade for an allstar if one was available, with the aim to be a longshot contender. But add an allstar to this group; and I don't know they even make the playoffs. So being hard capped just might not matter. I'd expect more than adding current or future talent; the Blazers main goal at the trade deadline for a second year will now be how to duck the luxury tax.

Maybe an argument can be made its even a good thing the team got hard capped; if it prevents Cronin from being able to executive a doomed to fail "win now" move that would send out youth or picks.

If we knew what we know now back in the summer it would have been best to not do this GPII signing. But with all the other problems this team has, and other signing aging much worse such as Nurk, its just doesn't appear that significant either way.

Looked pretty good out of the gate....I think his injury is not better. Question is....will it?

This has gone about as expected in my opinion. I do clip off about 2 hustle plays a games from him. Dogging the opposing team with pressure on the ball leading to a turnover. Thats the type of thing I thought he would do which is nice. But he isn’t a shooter or even a scorer for that matter.
I was surprised so many on here kept saying, “Wait til GP returns”….just isn’t that much of an impact player to be honest.

Understandable the "highlight" guy doesn't recognize impactful defense when he sees it.

Payton tries to play defense, but Lillard is short and getting old, then Simons runs away and hides under the bed. It hasn't been the prettiest debut for Gary on the Blazers.

GP2 looks like he signed for the payday and doesn’t give a shit to me. He’s completely redundant imo, it’s such a Blazer signing it’s hilarious.

I am. He's almost 30 and he's played 2055 regular season minutes in his career. He relies on his athleticism but can't stay healthy and, as we all know, few guys get more durable as they start their fourth decade on this planet.

He was helpful with Golden State as their 8th- or 9th-best player, but Portland adding him to our roster is just a waste of money and a missed opportunity.
Ugh. I hate being right sometimes.

The last game I went to I kind of felt the same way. I think it was his third game back and during one of the timeouts he was just standing, by himself, at midcourt, just looking up in the stands while his teammates were being "coached up" on the bench. It was the exact opposite of engaged.

Don't trust your feelings. Every game I've watched him play he's played harder on defense than anyone by far.

I don't argue that. Doesn't mean in isn't checked out, counting his money. Hard to blame him if so. I'd be old uncle Scrooge Mcduck swimming in my pools of coin too.

Agreed on the first part!

Probably smart for everyone around here to stop pretending they know how hard people are playing, how much they care, etc. etc.

I think Joe might have outdone Neil for his Evan Turner signing.
