Gary Payton wants to coach

Why get rid of one? Just add him.

Seems perfect in a world where businesses don't operate under a budget. Given that we've recently traded away a productive player for nothing in return just to save money, I get the feeling Jody won't be opening up the check book to add an inexperienced coach to see if he's any good.

Absolutely loved GP the player. Would not hire as a coach. Don't think he's type to take a back seat to Stotts or whoever is coaching. Not sure he would have patience coaching guys so much worse than him (except Lillard). One thing he would do is lead league in technicals for a coach. It would be fun, but don't think productive.
I do think he would respect a guy with the experience of Stotts, he's never been a problem with coaches before and Stotts was a respected coach when GP was still playing that GP would want to learn from. Everything else is why we need him. This team has no accountability, they need someone on that bench with no patience, they need a guy who would get techs and while I do think people are wrong and that he would be able to teach and develop a lot of applicable defensive skills on the roster the last and most important thing he would supply that our players absolutely need is seriousness, urgency and accountability on the defensive end.

Edit: I don't know if I would hire him if I were Stotts but I would hire him if I were Neil and I would sell Stotts on GP being the lead assistant and defensive head coach. That being said, Neil is just as much about sitting around a camp fire and singing kumbaya as Terry so this ain't happenin.

Why? The NBA doesn't allow defense.
I know that if you just watch our team it seams that way but teams actually do play defense. See when you don't play defense you end up as one of the teams that give up the most points per game and one of the teams that gives up the most threes per game at the highest percentage. Other teams aren't just lucky that they're ahead of us in these categories because they play defense, their coaches demand that they play defense, they don't have multiple rotation players that play like they only care about offense. So yeah the NBA does allow defense but I get why as a fan of our team you would get confused and think that there must be a rule against it because of how we play.

but only 3 years removed from ranking #6, so hard to accept it as coaching/scheme only problem. would look @ personnel equally important. i would initially rank the loss of coach vanterpool as a very significant reason except, well, minesota is still very bad at it. we had players that cared about it very much and understood that was their role. harkless, aminu, davis, turner, and to a certain extent even napier and vonleh. look at that group of vetern players and compare it to our bench experience last season. older teams trend much better in defensive analytics. last years bench consisting no one over the age of 25(hezonja) after the departure of bazemore and tolliver and bazemore had to start after the hood injury. loved that GTjr made the leap, but he wasn't enough considering we played Melo at the 4, and he isn't the same defender he was 5 years ago, and that reputation wasn't very good. a sad fact for this discussion includes tolliver starting 9 games and averaging 17 mpg overall. Pau gasol never played a minute for us. without Nurk and collins we were under manned to play the style defense that was succesful in 17-18. whiteside while an excellent rim protector, is slow footed and seemed slower to read/react than Nurk in covering up weaknesses on the perimeter. opponents also scored an additional 5 points per game in the paint and nearly 4 additional points on second chance attempts. 9 points per game between just these two stats.

Prepare to receive massive push back when using the logic that the variables that have changed (personnel) would be more likely to impact the reduction than the constants (dame, cj, and coaching). I agree with you though, very solid post!
